This Wasn’t in the BrochureNo More Halloween

When we lived in CaliforniaHalloween was a big deal. Theneighbors in our cul-du-sac would

try to compete with each other trying to out-decorate their place. My husband was theking of “themes”. So he was behindwhatever I wanted to do for Hallo -ween. I’d put ghostly figures inthe trees outside our house andlet the wind do the rest. Sometombstones, but what I had themost fun with was putting aghastly looking dummy in a chairby our front door, 3 weeks before thescary night. So anyone who walkedby knew it was a dummy. Well onHalloween, the real dummy sat outthere with a bowl of candy on her lap. Thatdummy was me. I hated Hallo ween, all thekids ringing the doorbells, getting the dogsnuts, having them grab handfuls of candy thatwas meant to last all night and only lated 2

hours. Then once the candy was gone we hadto turn out the lights and cower in the corneras kids kept trying tot get us to answer thedoor. So you see. I enjoyed scaring the life outof them when they would reach into the bowlthat was on the dummy’s lap to take theircandy. I would reach out for them. I got sogood at it, using one dummy, then 2 dummiesto throw them off, it got to the point wheresome kids wouldn’t even come up the walkbecause they didn’t know which “dummy”would grab them.

Now we are at our ranch for Halloween. No more candy to buy because there are notrick or treaters. No more decorations to putup because there is no one to scare. The dogsare quiet because we don’t even have a door-bell. I’m sure in town that a lot of people are

getting ready to decorate and a lot of lit-tle gremlins are buying or making

their costumes, and a lot of treatsare being put into bowls.And.... I’ll bet some homeowners will be cowering in thedark hoping the doorbelldoesn’t ring. But you now what?

In some strange demented way Imiss Halloween and scaring the

heck out of the little costumedgremlins, but then again, living

in the middle of nowhere does have it’sperks.

For the life of me I will never understandwhy people keep an animal that theyeither can’t or won’t feed. I was out rid-

ing recently and saw these poor horses, clearly starving. What right minded individ-ual could possibly believe that they weredoing right by these poor creatures? No hayor water was visible anywhere. My friendsand I had come across these skeletal crea-tures two years ago and called the LivestockInspectors to try to get something done abouttheir deplorable conditions. My friend evenoffered to take them home and bring themback to health at her own expense. No waywas the response, we love our horses.Really?????

The little sorrel colt in the picture is a 3year old, believe it or not. He hasn’t grownmuch since we saw him the first time. Backthen his hooves were long and curled upwardand he was barely walking. Today he wasbarely walking again, this time due to heatand starvation. Supposedly the owners are“connected” and were simply told to keeptheir horses away from the street so that noone could see them. I did put in another calltoday to a friend who I hope is equally con-nected. God willing he can get somethingdone before we ride by and see corpses andbuzzards. Yes, hay is outrageously expensivelately. But those of us who ride know that it isa necessity if we are to continue our horseloving lifestyles. And if we truly “love” ourhorses, doesn’t feeding them adequately to

avoid counting their ribs and vertebrae comewith that choice?

I understand that our rescues are full andpeople are cash strapped in these difficulteconomic times. But allowing an animal todie a slow painful death by starvation stillhardly seems justifiable. Are our laws pro-tecting livestock that weak? Is proving a caseagainst a bad owner that difficult? Is being“connected” really that powerful? I don’thave all the answers, but have to believe thatthe answer to these questions is a resoundingyes.

Thank God there are people out theretrying to do right by these poor creatures. You know who you are and I thank you for thejob that you do. The Mohave County Sheriff’sOffice has made great efforts to rescue neg-lected animals like these. In a county the sizeof Mohave it must be an overwhelming task! Iencourage anyone that comes across an ani-mal in poor condition to make a call. Don’tturn a blind eye or assume that no one cares,it simply isn’t true. And if you find it in yourheart to do so, donate a buck or two to yourlocal shelter or rescue. Take out a few balesof hay or a sack of grain. It may seem like asmall gesture, but if everyone made even asmall donation imagine the difference itwould make in the lives of these magnificentcreatures.

Iwas readin’ the other day about Rockwall,Texas, how these folks were diggin’ upbones of giants. Rumors were some were

guessin’ these boys were fifteen or more feettall. I’m guessin’ if it were so, the DallasMavericks would have already been lookin’ tosign up some of their kinfolk. Got me tothinkin’ ‘bout bones.

We used to slaughter a calf each yearand the meat man would cut and wrap it all upin nice meal-sized packages with labels onthem telling us what was in it. Seems like thesteaks went first, then the roasts andhamburger, kept buryin’ the liver deep as Icould in the old freezer, it was my job to getstuff out for Mom to cook for us.... there wasalways a few packages of “bones.” My oldRed Bone hound, Bruno, really apprec iated itwhen I dug out bones. I don’t know why wegot packages of bones, we never atebones..... but when I found a package of them,I’d give a big bone to Bruno.

The first time I gave him one it lookedlike a knee bone, he took it and buried it outin the yard. He came right back to me and Igave him another chunk of bone.... this onehe took and laid in the shade and chewed itall day.

Lookin’ back it makes sense to me today. Some bones need buried and others needchewin’ on. I never did see Bruno dig up abone that he buried. I finally learned afteryears of bein’ married, some bones are justbetter left buried, others need chewed on alittle...... “bone of contention”.... leave them

buried! “Bone to pick with you”.....sometimes those need chewed on awhile toget things worked out.

When we have a bone to pick withsomeone, we usually jaw about it to friendsand family, FB, Twitter, or anyplace else wethink will listen to us, just keep chewin’ on thebone rather than doin’ the right thing. TheBible says in...

Matt 18:15“If your brother sins,

go and show him his faultwhen the two of you arealone. If he listens to you,you have regained your

brother.

One time Jesus’ disciple Peter askedJesus how many times we gotta forgive some-one that gives us trouble. Jesus basically saidwe must forgive everytime one asked to beforgiven. Forgiving means.... bury the oldbone, then leave it buried.

When you ask God to forgive you of yoursins, He does, because Jesus paid for them foryou. I guess ole Bruno forgot where he buriedthose bones, and, like God forgets yours, youshould forget the sins others..... Along TheWay....

Diggin’ up bones.... Along The Way

Weed Eaters IV

Photos provided by Robert Eldorado

Hello Readers!  Here we are again to talkabout our weed eaters.  In the last 3issues we’ve covered the difference

between browsers (goats) and grazers(sheep).  We have talked about males andfemales and the best weed eaters of all calledwethers which are a banded male, becausethey have no issues and just think about eat-ing.  We’ve talked about Pigmy goats andNubien milk goats and the Boer goat for meat.We talked about my favorite, Barbados sheep,a pretty common breed in our area.  We eventalked about another favorite of mine theBurro, a great all around friend for any ranch.

This month  as promised we are going totalk a bit about breeding your WeedEaters soyou can have cute little baby WeedEaters. There is nothing as cute and lovable as babygoats or sheep.  Now keep in mind I do notknow it all nor claim to be an expert, infact Ihave friends I call when I have a question. The normal time to have your babies is fall orspring, mom carries for about 5 months. Thisis not cut in stone because my own goats did-n’t get the memo last year and they beganpopping out on January first!  But generally itsfall and spring, leaving a lot of gray area.

If you want to keep your Nubien goatsNubien you need to seperate your goats bybreed.  Because they will inter-breed, a billygoat will breed anything it can and yes evensheep although it will be stilborn.  You mightsay you don’t care if they inter-breed but ifyou ever go to sell some of your goats, you’llfind you will get less if they want them at all. Some mixed breeds are excepted for exam-ple Nubien and Boer make a good solidbreed.  But if you add Pigmy to anything butNigerian your looking to take a loss.  Thereare several mixes that are good but its usaual-ly best to stay with a solid breed.

When the babies are born, usually whenyour not around, they are covered in a protec-tive mucus which mom will clean up almostinstantly.  She might have one, get it cleanedup and then have another, do the same andafter a little break have another.  Or mom canjust drop all 3 one after another, and thenshe’s hard pressed to get them cleaned upbefore they are already trying to stand.  Don’tget your hopes up, you may only have one, ormaybe two, and sometimes three.  I have afew Boer does that always drop three and I

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10New International Version (NIV)

(9) Two are better than one, because they have a good return

for their labor:(10) If either of them falls down,

one can help the other up.But pity anyone who falls

and has no one to help them up.

The title says it all really, the AmericanBurro is a very versitile animal.  I get a lotof calls about burros, one of the most

common questions is "what is the differencebetween a burro and a donkey?"  Well I'veheard two answers to this question.  The easi-est  answer is "burro" is the spanish word fordonkey.  Many others believe that a burro isthe wild version of the animal and a donkey isthe domesticated version.  To my Dad the worddonkey is the very small burros of Mexico.  Forwhatever reason, I call them Burros...

The most common burros in Arizona andacross the US are the gray Spanish Cross vari-ety.  This is the type of burro that runs wild andis collected by the BLM to be adopted out.  Thefacts very, some say Columbus himselfbrought the first Spanish Cross burros to theUS, others say it was the Priests of Mexico.  Butthis Spanish Cross breed can be found not onlyhere but all through Europe, all are gray withthe sign of the cross down the backbone andacross their shoulders.

It really doesn't matter where they camefrom, they are very special animals.  PersonallyI think everyone with a ranch large or smallshould have a burro.  They are great petsbecause they have a sensitive personality.  Thefemales called Jennys are especially friendlyas can be the gelded males.  The Jacks howev-er, the uncut males, have a more aggressivenature and have been known to take on moun-tain lions and even bears.  This is not to say youcan't have one for a pet, but if you have dogs

you could have problems. The Jennys and Gelded males however

can be extremely friendly to you and yoursand still be great watch dogs for your ranch. For example the coyote and the burro are nat-ural enemies and the coyote wants nothing todo with them.  Just having a burro on yourranch can keep the smaller troublemakersaway.  Many people place a burro with theirherds of sheep or goats for protection.  Not tomention they are just plain good to havearound friends.

Now if your shopping for a good burro, get one that is already friendly.  Burros havepersonalities too and some can be a pain in thebut and really stand-offish.  Why waste yourtime, there are lots of very friendly ones.Prices vary from $150 to $600.  The commonSpanish Cross burros will be less money.  Or ifyour really lucky to find one, there are the larg-er dark brown or black burros originally fromFrance.  They are absolutely beautiful animalsand can be excellent companions.  There arealso Paint burros similar to a paint horse andMammoth Burros that are very large boned.Whichever breed you get, consider yourselfluck to have such a friend on your ranch.  MyDad used to say  that the burros  were angelslooking out for us, just look into that face andyou'll know its true.

have a Barbados ewe that had 4 last year.Mother nature has no rule book, she plays itas she likes.

Once those babies are cleaned up bymom and you’ve taken a dozen pictures, theyare going to stand up on all four legs and startlooking for some milk.  That very first drink ofmother’s best is the most important, if theydon’t get it soon they may no make it.  If youhave a mom that’s had babies before yourprobably going to be ok, but if she’s a youngfirst time mom you want to watch over her.  Ihave had mom’s that do nothing at all, I havehad them try to clean up the babies but refusethem milk, there have been mom’s I have hadto tie to the fence so the babies can comemilk.  And remember that first drink is life ordeath to your baby.  And sometimes its notmom’s fault, I’ve had to pinch mom’s nipplepretty hard to break the seal so milk will flowout.  Don’t panic, I’m not saying you too willhave all these problems, but its good to knowwhat can happen so you can be ready.  Andworse case if you get a bad first time mom youcan always bottle feed, You can either milk themom and bottle feed it to your baby(s) orthere is a formula you can get at your localfeed store.

Most of the time mom does a pretty goodjob and you’ll just sit back and enjoy yournew additions.  Everyone has a different ideaon when to ween your baby from mom, somesay 5 weeks, some wait until 6 or 7, some waituntil Mom quits or pushes the baby away.  But

after a certain time the baby starts pulling themom down, personally I’d say 5 to 6 weeks isgood on most goats.  Once we’ve got themweened we need to talk about their horns. Many people like to burn the horns at about 6weeks so they will not grow, there is a specialtool for that and its called dehorning.  I’d liketo make a comment here, the goats horns arepart of its cooling system, blood flows within, and we are in Arizona, unless your going toshow the goat I leave the horns on for the wel-fare of the animal.

One last thing, if you have a male andwant to band it you should catch that just afterthey are weened.  On pigmy goats since theyare so small anyway you may want to wait a bitlonger, depending on size.

Well that’s it for this issue, the mostimportant thing to remember is these times isyour weedeaters and other animals need lotsof water.  We live in Arizona!  It would be greatto have water in a few locations in case onegets knocked over, they need this water tosurvive.  I’d like to thank Lois and all the read-ers that have called in to talk goats, it was apleasure.  The cute little goat pictured thisissue was just born Sept 30th, he is a blueeyed cross between a Pigmy and Nigerian. We haven’t decided yet if he will be banded.

Well another fair has come and gone. This was a good year, I was able towatch the horse show because, unfor-

tunately, I was unable to ride. It’s amazing whatyou can learn by watching. Some young peoplereally stood out in my mind looking back at theday. First was my daughter, Lara. Lara rides a 16hand quarter horse named Quest. Quest is abig kind and beautiful horse, but can be a bit ofa hand full when he’s taken from the herd.

Lara had started the morning out helpingme with my young colt “Peter” and she did agreat job for me. Then she got ready to showQuest. Lara brought him down from the stalls allwas well until he saw GG and Peter.

Lara’s first class being Halter did not gowell, Quest became a total basket case! Larareally loves this horse and was really wanting totake him in the class. She led him in and did okuntil they had to line up. He wanted back withhis little herd. It got ugly and scary for her asQuest is very tall when standing on his hindfeet! Well she survived that with a bit of helpfrom Dad.

Now after the Halter she had to saddle himfor a Western Pleasure class, you know it’s notgood when putting the saddle on be comes arodeo event. I did not want Lara to take him intothe class, You know me “Have fun but keep itsafe!!” Not looking real safe at this time. Herecomes my good friend Darcy to save the day.

I got him saddled she got on and rode himfor a about ten minutes and then I sent Laraover to watch, learn and ride. She was able toget on and take him in the class. I was so proudof her there were tears and fears and lots ofemotion going on but she was able, withDarcy’s help, to overcome, get on, take charge, and end up winning Reserve Western AllAround walk jog 14-over. Lara only started rid-ing Quest a few months ago, She just loves him,it would have broke her heart not to show himafter all her hard work.

Lara did all his grooming and trainingherself. She did not give up just because thingsgot a bit ruff. She took some instruction didn’tmake any excuses and pushed herself andQuest to victory!!

The next was a young boy eleven yearsold named Daniel Arsenault. Daniel started rid-ing with me about three months ago and waspreparing to show at the fair. Daniel is so smartand polite, a great student to teach. I rememberabout three weeks after we started I had givenDaniel a sheet of paper with a picture of a horseon it with all the body parts listed. I told him Iwanted him to study them and I would give hima test the following week. He is the only childthat has come back and listed every body part.I’m talking thirty parts all listed and put on thebody of the horse.

While teaching Daniel he was very quietdidn’t talk very much. I was worried, some ofthe time, that he didn’t quite understand what Iwas trying to tell him. The day of the show cameand he did so great he won Western Walk JogAll Around 13 and Under Reserve Champion. Ilearned Daniel understood everything I hadsaid. Wow! I was so proud of him! Daniel hadreally never rode before and never shown ahorse ever! He showed courage, he kept hiscomposure in the ring. It was a pleasure towatch.

I would also like to give Pat Powers a bighigh five for working with her beautiful mareand overcoming much. Pat rode in westernpleasure winning her class after not showing ahorse in years, as she always is the one behindthe scenes helping her husband, Doug, or herchildren. Pat Powers is the best horse groomerI’ve ever met. She can take an ok horse andmake them look fabulous!! She has helped mea few times in the past with my groomingissues.

So the moral of this story is never give up,strive to achieve your goals. Have fun and keepit safe.

The weather is getting nice again and it’stime to hit the trails. If anyone is in need of agreat place to board their horse, we have twospots open at the moment. We ride out everyweekend lots of great trails at the base of theBlack Mountains. Have Fun and Keep it Safe!!

Now here is an AWESOME group of cowgirls & cowboys!! 2012 Mohave County Fair Gymkhana CHAMPIONS! Outstanding performance by ALL! Thank-you.What a wonderful turn-out for our 66th Mohave County Fair Gymkhana! We had over 50 riders, excited to have a chance to possibly win saddles, buckles, horse blankets, silver show halters and gift cards. Also, if that is not enough to get the riders and their horses hearts pumping, when the final results wereannounced EVERYONE who participated then had a chance to pick the "Lucky Card" for a shiny Trophy Horse Trailer! Talk about everyone being on the edgeof their seats (in the saddle OR in the grandstands)! As with any event that includes our equine companions, there is the risk of possible injury. We did haveone very tough cowboy, Jordon Economou, who unfortunately fell off his horse when the cinch broke. Jordon bumped his head and the horse accidentallystepped on him. With his mother, Andrea Economou, by his side and very upset about his well-being, our outstanding volunteers, riders and spectators madesure that Jordon and his mother, Andrea were given a ride to the hospital right away. Their horses were unsaddled, put in stalls with food and water. Constantcontact with the Economou family and the fair gymkhana director, volunteers and close friends continued through-out the remainder of the event. Thankfully,Jordon did not have any life-threatening injuries and was released from the hospital the next day. Everyone knew that Jordon was going to be just fine whenhis mother stated, "Jordon was so upset that he did not get to come back and finish the gymkhana because he really wanted one of those neat saddles!"
