It wasn’t just an illusion when Taylor McMurtry and herown JustAn Illusionwon the Feb. 13, $50,000 EMOGrandPrix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. The horse-and-

rider combination celebrated their first grand prix win ever toconclude the OcalaWinter Classic at HITS Post Time Farm.“I’m so happy!” said McMurtry, 18. “I’m overwhelmed.

Especially since it was my goalto win a grand prix this year, Iam so excited that I did and soearly in the season.”McMurtry of Barrington

Hills, Ill. and Just An Illusionenjoyed a successful run lastwinter at HITS Ocala with mul-tiple ribbons in the grand prix and qualified for the Pfizer $1Million Grand Prix, which is once again on their radar.“We had such a great time showing in the Pfizer Million

in Saugerties last year,” she said. “I really hope we qualifyagain as it is definitely a big goal of mine.”Thirty-Four riders took the field on Feb. 13 to navigate the

first-round course set by course designer Bernardo Cabral of

Lisbon, Portugal. The course proved difficult, especially inthe home stretch. As riders made their way to fence 10, whichwas a vertical, it required a tight rollback to an oxer at fence11. This led to the last line – a triple combination to a verti-cal with a liverpool. The end of the course caused the mostgrief, with 11 horses taking the last fence down.

McMurtry’s trainer,AaronValeof Morriston, Fla., and Paparazzi10, owned by Thinkslikeahorseand Norman Petersen, led off theclass. They had a rail down at theB element of the triple and at thelast fence, for a total of eightjumping faults.

“It was good to watch him [Vale] go first,” said McMurtry.“It was a tricky course and it rode a little different than itwalked. That last fence seemed to be at a funny angle and I didit in a steady seven [strides], though most people did it in six.”The dominant team of Tracy Magness and Mr. and Mrs.

John Bartko’s TarcoVanTer Moude showed fifth in the orderand made their presence felt as the first pair to go clean. The

victors of the Feb. 9, $2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome,Magness and Tarco, as he’s often called, are a consistentwinning combination at HITS Ocala, and tough to beat inthe clutch. McMurtry would join Magness four trips laterwith a clear ride of her own to set up the jump-off.Another Illinois native, Laura Linback, steeredWoodrun’s

Uppsala to a clear round three trips later, and Harold Chop-ping of Southern Pines, N.C., aboard Penelope Straight andJenna Hoy’s Little Glen’sValentino completed a clear roundof their own four trips after Linback. The next 11 failed to make it around the course clear, as

rails down in the triple and at the last fence caused troublefor many. Twenty-eighth to go was Mickie Sage of Denver,Colo., and Katie Shannon’s Ultimo, who broke the unluckystreak with a clear round and joined the group moving on tothe jump-off.After another string of riders failing to go clearin the first round, all eyes turned to the final entry of theclass, German grand prix riderAndre Thieme and SethVall-honrat’s Coco 135. Thieme added another threat to captur-ing the win when he finished with all fences intact. At the end of the first round, the six teams advancing to

the jump-off featured a mix of young, up-and-coming riderscombined with a solid group of seasoned veterans, all look-

ing to take home the first-place purse. Cabral’s short coursefeatured eight obstacles and a time allowed of 57 seconds. The track finished at the same last jump that posed troublefor so many in the first round.Magness andTarcoVanTer Moude were the first to jump-

off and set the Great American Time to Beat at 42.223 sec-onds with no jumping faults. The team would ultimatelyfinish in second place.McMurtry and JustAn Illusion had amountain to climb next

as Magness and Tarco Van Ter Moude are consistently fast inthe jump-off. They rose to the occasion and shaved nearly asecond off the time and took over the lead in 41.439 seconds.Next to show was Linback aboard Uppsala who posted

the third double-clear effort in a row when they timed in at42.849 seconds, which finished in third.Chopping and Little Glen’s Valentino returned next, and

finished with four jumping faults in 41.927 seconds, whichultimately placed them sixth.Sage and Ultimo delivered a clear jump-off round in

44.148 seconds to ultimately finish fourth.Last to show in the jump-off was Thieme and Coco 135,

whowere second inThursday’s $25,000 SmartPakGrand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. The team had the fastesttime by more than a second but in a heartbreaking finale, thelast fence came down adding four jumping faults that put themin fifth place and crowned McMurtry the winner.

“Ocala is home for him [Just An Illusion],” said Mc-Murtry. “He loves coming out for the big Sunday classes. We just have such a great connection together and he givesme a lot of confidence for the bigger classes.”With the win, McMurtry currently has $15,000 in prize

money and two of the eight grand prix needed to becomeeligible to for the 2011 Pfizer Million. With 10 more op-portunities to compete in qualifying grand prix at HITSOcala, McMurtry will have plenty of chances to make hergoal of qualifying for this year’s Pfizer Million a reality. HCD

After a successful two-week Pre-Circuit and a shortbreak, show jumping resumed at HITS Post TimeFarm in Ocala, Florida on Feb. 8 with the Ocala

Winter Classic, the first of six AA-rated weeks of competi-tion. Silvio Mazzoni of Leesburg, Va., piloted his own Re-monta Habano to a decisive win in the Feb. 10, $25,000SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health.“It was a beautiful course,” Mazzoni said. “This is a very

special horse for me and we work so well together.”Mazzoni and Remonta Habano have been competing to-

gether for a year, and are one of several new horse-and-riderteams showing at HITS Ocala this season. Last year, the duoenjoyed six weeks at HITS Culpeper and finished the cir-cuit with a win in the $15,000 Brook Ledge Open JumperPrix at the Culpeper Finals.Thirty riders took the field last Thursday to navigate the

first-round course set by course designer Bernardo Cabral ofLisbon, Portugal. The course featured 12 obstacles and 15 ef-forts. The last line was a liverpool to a triple combination to awide oxer to finish the course, and proved to be the toughestpart of the course as 15 of the 30 teams had faults in that line.Three trips in, Hunter Holloway of Topeka, Kansas, riding

Hays Investment Corp.’s Argentina looked to be the first togo clear, but crossed the timers just a hair over the time al-lowed of 80 seconds. Holloway was one of three teams torack up a single time fault in the class and, as a result, shefinished in eighth place. Mazzoni followed Holloway andproduced the first clear effort of the class within the timeallowed. Three trips later, David Tromp of North Salem,N.Y. and Beyaert Farm Inc.’s Casey laid down the next clearride, ensuring a jump-off. Six trips later, Germany’s AndreThieme joined the jump off list with SethVallhonrat’s Coco135. Four trips later Tromp returned to the ring on his sec-ond mount, Renoir du Buisson, and went clean, which gavehim a two-horse advantage in the jump-off.

Jordan Coyne of New Port Richey, Fla., and her ownLazaro were the last to go in the first round, and were the finalpair to advance, setting the stage for an exciting jump-off.Mazzoni and Remonta Habano set a strong pace for the

rest of the field with a clear round in 37.414 seconds, theGreatAmericanTime to Beat, which earned them the win intheir first grand prix outing of the season.“I’m looking forward to showing in Ocala for the next

four weeks,” Mazzoni said. “It’s really nice here and thereare a lot of competitive horses.” HCD

Hello to all!As we get intoMarch, we all groan, for it is

that dreaded tax time again. For land owners, evenwith

an agricultural exemption, property taxes can amount to

a significant burden. Did you know that you have options to re-

duce your property taxes by 50 percent, or even 100 percent? And

you can continue to use your land, protect it from development

pressure, and potentially write off 50 percent or even 100 percent

of your income taxes for up to 16 years? Got your attention?

The Conservation Trust for Florida, a private, non-profit

organization, works to protect working, rural Florida lands.

Responsibly-managed agricultural lands provide irreplaceable

“ecosystem services” – clean air, water, and soil. The Con-

servation Trust for Florida champions the fact that the tradi-

tional and historical uses of these lands hold them together,

keeping them productive for the landowner and benefiting the

communities around them.These lands are

a cornerstone of Florida’s economy, which

provide hundreds of thousands of jobs.

Utilizing the land owner’s own land

management consultants, tax and legal ad-

visors, local University of Florida Institute of Food andAgri-

cultural Sciences extension agents, the United States

Department of Agriculture and other industry experts as

needed, a conservation easement will be custom tailored

alongside a land management plan, especially suited to your

traditional and intended future uses, to then have flexibility

built in, accommodating the changing times ahead.

Those who own land covered by these conservation easements

still privatelyown their land, andcan sell it or pass it on to their heirs.

The farmer, equestrian, rancher, forester andhunter can still dowhat

theyalwayshave, usuallywithminoror evennochanges to their cur-

rent landusepractices, and thepublichasno increased rights to enter

upon these private, protected lands. Depending on how large the

property, a few residential rights and all reasonable and customary

agricultural structures canalsobe reservedandwritten into theease-

ment. In every case, development pressure from the land is perma-

nently eliminated, alleviating the stress it creates on families, espe-

cially as it passes from one generation to the next, often triggering

crushing taxes, sometimes forcing a premature and ill-timed sale.

Conservation easements are not new, but the way the state

and federal governments treat them surely is new. Until the end

of 2011, donations of conservation easements are rewarded at

substantially increased levels by the Internal Revenue Service.

The value of a donated, qualified conservation easement can be

used to write off half of the donor’s adjusted gross income over

a period up to 16 years, up from 30 percent, and over a period

of up to six years. Furthermore, if at least half of the donor’s in-

come comes from bona fide agriculture (in the year of the

recording of the easement), then the donor can be fully income

tax exempt for up to 16 years (or until the value of the easement

is used up, whichever comes first).

More importantly, Florida voters passed a law in 2008 creating a

new classification for lands protected with

conservation easements, including working

agricultural lands. For landowners whomake

no profit from their land, or those who return

any profits made back into the land through

approved land management practices, zero property taxes are due.

And, takeany incomemade fromtheseprotected landsand theprop-

erty taxeswill be cut tohalf the just value (which is inmost cases the

“greenbelt assessment”). The level of property tax exemption is

made yearly through the local county Property Appraiser’s of-

fice. “Non-conservation” uses on the land, like a residence, will

still be subject to ordinary assessments and property taxes.

To learn more about these options, contact the Conserva-

tionTrust for Florida.Whatever your plans for your farm, keep

up the good management practices!

Does Writing Off TaxesGet Your Attention?

You have options to reduce your property taxesby 50 percent, or even 100 percent.

Iheard a story recently about a young girl who was lost in a swamp. Searcherscombed the woods for hours looking for the young girl. They struck off on

their own, wandering far and near without any luck. After many hours of look-ing for the girl they reconvened and reevaluated their efforts. After some dis-cussion, a member of the group said, “As individuals looking by ourselves, wewill never find her – we must hold hands and search the swamp again as one.”

The others agreed and all the rescuers held hands, combing the swamp inchby inch as a group. Some short hours later, but all too late, they found the life-less body of the girl in the swamp. As they carried her away, one of thesearchers said, “If we had only held hands and worked together sooner.”

We have to work together. The opportunity is at hand. We have a window tomake the Florida Agriculture Center and Horse Park Authority a viable func-tion of the state and county economy and area culture.

Differences and individualism are not uncommon in anything. It’s how thosedifferences are managed that is important. Think of it as a relationship – youand your partner are surely not exactly the same and agreeable on every minis-cule detail of life. But – a successful relationship will work through those dif-ferences and make it work. It takes communication, the occasionalimprovisation and of course, compromise. The key to this is working togetherfor the common good.

What is the common good of the Florida Horse Park? A haven for equestri-ans and outdoor enthusiasts of every sort. From world-class equestrian eventsand agricultural interests to RV owners, dog trainers and festival organizers,we are by design, a host for all of those and more.

The Florida Horse Park, whether directly or indirectly, affects us all! It isnot uncommon for a person who works in the Thoroughbred industry to com-pete in team roping or enjoy trail riding or be an avid runner. Thoroughbredsretired from the racing industry are often re-homed to individuals who takethem on to another competitive show career. The entire horse industry is in-terconnected. Not a simple end-to-end connection, but a complicated web ofconnections that demand we all work together to keep each other afloat as acommunity within horses and without.

Here is my invitation to work together for the common good and bettermentof the area’s equine industry through the communal thread of the Florida HorsePark. Be a part of the solution. Support the horse park to move it forward to-wards completion. It will serve as a catalyst for long-term job creation that willaid in improving the economy throughout the state. The horse park will alsoserve our community as a facility that offers a competitive and recreationalhub in an eco-friendly atmosphere for residents with all sorts of interests – notjust horses.

The Florida Horse Park is an opportunity for us all. Let’s work together now.

Working together for the common good.
