MOVIE TRAILER ANALYSIS

• At what point are we told the title of the movie? -2:06 which is around the end of the trailer, to build suspense for the audience and is more memorable.

• Why will be told who is starring in the movie? In this clip we are not told who is starring in it, we think that is because the actors are not well known yet. The reason movies would do this is because some actors appeal to the audience and they would therefore watch that movie purely because a certain actor is in it.

• What types of actions or events do we see in the trailer? We saw all the key suspense moments and parts of the main action scenes in the film but didn’t see the whole of any scenes so are left questioning what happens next.

• What clues will the music give us as to what type of film the trailer is advertising? The music is constantly changing in tempo and dynamics to create suspense and there are sudden stops to silence creating the effect that something is about to happen. The music is also basic with lack of rhythm to make you focus more on the visuals.

• What type of voice is delivering the trailer? The narrator is always male with an extremely deep, dramatic voice. Is recognised by the audience as the horror genre.

• How will the general speed and editing pace of what we see compare to watching a clip from a film? They will show you loads of fast, quick shots to capture you attention and to get your heart racing but still not giving to much away. They will also show slightly longer clips such as people talking so that it makes the audience understand the narrative better and also adds to the suspense.

• Why don’t we see the classifications for a film as part of the trailer? Because the age rate of the trailer might be different to the actual age rate of the movie. If the movies a 15 sometimes they don’t display the age as it wouldn’t appeal to an older audience.

• When would you see the classifications of a film on the trailer? As they need to be advertising in the right places and couldn’t be screened in cinemas whilst watching children films.

CODES AND CONVENTIONS• In many horror films the title always appears near the end of the trailer to build suspense and to make sure you don’t

forget the name of the movie so you are more likely to go and watch it. This convention happens in this movie as it appears at 2:06 and the trailer is only 2 minutes 26 seconds long.

• Some trailers contain quotes from magazines to promote there movie from a reliable source that people will take into account when deciding to go and watch the movie. This movie does not follow the conventions as there are no quotes in the trailer.

• The conventional music in horror clips is that it builds in pace and then climaxes as the story line and imaging gets more dramatic this should give the audience the feeling that they are tense and venerable. In this particular trailer it starts of with a dramatic speech given by the conventional horror narrative voice, a deeply mescaline voice that conflicts power. There is then a brief narrative structure as we hear the characters talking this is then followed by sound effects getting louder as the scenes get more intense. The music then starts and is constantly changing in tempo and dynamics to create suspense and there are sudden stops to silence creating the effect that something is about to happen. The music is also basic with lack of rhythm to make you focus more on the visuals.

• There isn’t really a convention for the number of edits but I would say for this length of clip that average amount would be between 70-90 edits. This clip goes slightly over this average as there is 111 edits including fade to blacks and a strange blue lighting effect they use. The pace of horror trailers are usually very similar as they usually start slow and slowly build suspense as they revile the climax at the end. This trailer is very similar as they do start of slowly and build suspense to a little climax and then slows back down again, it then picks up the pace and then presents the main climax of the movie

• Every horror trailer presents there big climax at the end of the movie and try to create a lasting impression on the audience so they want to go and watch the movie once its released. In the end of this particular trailer the spirit is revealed and the dramatic music inherences her presence. The final girl also revealed. At the very end we see the two meeting and a scream at the end leaving the audience wondering what happened and wanting to go and see the movie.

CODES AND CONVENTIONS• Most horror films have clear information of events so it’s easy to have a clear understanding of the story

line. In this movie we can understand that they are doing scientific research into the belief of ghosts and spirits and that if you believe they will appear. We can then see that it backfires and each member of the scientific team gets haunted and possibly killed.

• There is always a calm and relaxing stage of the trailer which acts as a signifier to indicate who are the victims, protagonist, antagonist, final girl and to get a basic understanding of the narrative. It’s usually before the main climax of the trailer and is a good technique to build suspense. I think that in this movie the calm and relaxing stage is when the music is silent and all you can hear is the girl saying is “ I don’t believe” this is a very tense moment as its pert of the suspense but there is no action in the scene.

• In order to understand what is to come in the movie the trailer always Identifies the main character, such as the killer or victim. They usually demonstrate who is who by giving them more screen time in the trailer and pace of music helps you understand who's good and who's bad. In this trailer there are not that many characters we see three young people at the beginning talk about there beliefs, the two mails are shown in danger in the trailer where as the girl stays till the end: final girl theory. The villain is also identified at the end of scene as ghostly spirit girl.

• Narrative structure is the most important aspect of the trailer as it sets the story and the theme of the movie, if this is not presented well the less likely people are going to go and see the movie once its released. In this trailer it is easy to understand the plot as I find that the events happen in chronological order of the movie making it easy to understand.
