This film is a horror which portrays the life of a woman trapped inside a younger’s body as the life of a vampire. The story follows the relationship which builds between her and ‘Eli’ a young boy struggling through life. The representation of … shows her to be vulnerable much like a child as she kills on instinct by nature and not with an intent to purposely harm innocent people. The screenshots below display many different points during the film which play a significant role in the understanding of the plot form and structure of the piece as a whole.

Let the right

one inTrees suggest the setting to be isolated.

The beginning scene is mysterious and shocking with a man hanging upside down from a tree, his blood dripping into a can. This is an instant signifier to a vampire film as conventions tell us that vampires must drink blood to survive.

Pure white dog shows innocence as contrast to man hanging. Dog, known to be a ‘loyal companion’. Sheer brutality shown by hanging as dog watches its owner.

Suspiciously crawling into background suggests guilt.

Dark background and setting signifies night time.

White snow makes signs easier to see e.g. red blood on the white snow is clear to see in the darkness.

Girl stands higher than boy at their first meeting to show her higher authority status. We learn later that this may be related to ‘age and the authority she holds for this reason.

Council owned houses signified by their similarity and worn down look. Signifies class.

Girl stands on a climbing frame, an object related to her age range therefore makes the scene more realistic in their meeting.

Snow suggests the hanging of the man has not taken place long ago.

Blonde hair suggests innocence and his hair cut signifies the time this film was set, possibly 70s.

Dark background and setting signifies night time.

Horror convention to add suspense.

The climbing frame is still present in their first meeting to further represent ‘age’.

Notice Eli is more colourful than her and the surroundings displaying him to be the protagonist as we are drawn to him more than others in shot.

Drab clothing suggestion of poor status, bland and dreary clothing blends with the background and could indicate the need to blend in; she is in hiding.

Estate buildings in background to reinforce status.

Notice she is wearing little clothing in the cold conditions yet he is wrapped up in a coat and scarf. Insight into her vampire character and therefore does not feel the cold.

Eli blurred out in background to show his presence but our attention is drawn to the girl.

Hazy background signifying the mysterious adventure Eli is embarking upon and the large secret being kept from him.

Blood a link to her form of a vampire is made. Subsequently a horror convention.

Red eyes to further signify her as a vampire. Looking down and away from Eli suggesting she is ashamed. Does not fit with convention of horror as she is sad about her form killing only on impulsive instinct and for survival.

Pale skin, signifier of her being a vampire and helps to highlight the dark red blood on her face.

MEDIUM SHOT CREATES THE FOCUS AROUND THE

PROTAGONIST YET ALLOWS US TO SEE THE SETTING.

MEDIUM SHOT OF VAMPIRE LETS US SEE HER AS THE FOCUS AND HER EXPRESSION, YET WE SEE ELI IN THE BACKGROUND CREATING SUSPENSE AS HE

IS SO CLOSE TO REALISING THE TRUTH ABOUT HER.

Eli’s hand pure white showing that he is the sense of hope to the vampire.

CONTRADICTORY SHOT

Watch on Eli’s arm signifies the character as he wears this throughout.

Blurred background to keep our eyes on the central hands.

Bloody hand, blood being a horror convention signifying death yet hands touching shows a loving motion.

Irony of the pure white snow; purity related to innocence and the blood on her hand. This same symbolism shown by her hand and his; innocent child’s hand and one covered in blood.

Snow on the ground representing no large time change and helps the characters to be seen clearer.

Coloured jumper once again reference to era; possibly 70’s.

Evil intensity in Eli’s eyes signify that he is willing to use the weapon.

Fact that he is a child makes the

shot more sinister as a symbol of

innocence has an intention to kill.

Tight grip on weapon signifies

the angry emotions he is feeling.

Knife, to be used as a weapon? This

signifies the horror is reaching a

murderous scene and/or builds tension as the

audience wait for the weapon to be

used.

Setting is a dreary room, possibly and abandoned building implied by the pipes and brick wall.

Warm clothing add to the eerie feel of

the shot as they suggest he is in a

cold place.

CLOSE UP TO REFLECT THEIR CLOSE CONNECTION THAT HAS NOW FORMED. ALLOWS US TO SEE THEIR LOVE FOR EACH OTHER AS A

CLOSENESS, YET THE HAND HOLDNG IS APPROPRIATE FOR THEIR AGE.
