• they possess simple horns and do not exhibit the rough, spiny appearance of the parents but can be compared in size when just born

• Seven species reproduce by laying eggs (oviparous) and six species give birth to live young (viviparous).

• Horned lizards can range from 3/8 of an inch to about 6 and 1/8 of an inch in lengths and about two inches in width.

There is a spectrum of colors that this species of reptiles could be. Ranging anywhere from grayish tones with black or brown spots or brown to yellow spotted horned lizards, some are even reddish brown.

Horned lizards are found in a variety of places preferably dry land.

• Horned lizards primarily live in the southwest regions of North America.

• They can be found between southern Canada and Guatemala, but their habitats are usually scrub deserts, arid environments and oak-pine woodlands.

WHAT THEY EAT

They eat mostly harvester ants

flies

spiders

a variety of insects

HOW THEY CAPTURE

The horned lizards are able to capture these ants without being stung or bitten because the ants are trapped inside the mucus which immobilizes the mandibles, legs and stinger

• the movements of these lizards appear to be pushups on the front legs with nodding and bobbing of the head.

• These movements have also been proven to attract mates.

Camouflage Blood squirting Rough appearance

When these muscles contract, they cut off blood flow back to the heart, while it continues to flow into the head. This floods the ocular sinuses with blood, building pressure, and causing them to bulge. By further contracting these muscles in a rapid manner, the pressure increases even more, eventually rupturing the thin sinus membranes. The result is a jet stream of blood that can shoot up to four feet from the eye socket, a process known as auto-hemorrhaging
