JWY High Scrimmage Draws Sizeable Crow d First f ootball Tern : After almost three weeks of preliminaries, the James Wilson Young High School football squad finally got down to the tough business of rugged scrimmage this past week in Bayport. On Saturday, there was an intra-squad scrimmage with as- sistant Coach Jesmur ' s Spartans taking on assistant Coach Cover- dale ' s Raiders . The Spartans won 6-0 when Mike Roecklein, play- ing quarterback , connected with Dom Davino , an end, on a 30- yard pass play and touchdown in the second quarter. Standouts for the day on de- fense were Drew Bevis attackle, Mark Rozycki at end, Tim Richt- er at center line backer and Billy Ross and Dennis Sheehan , halfbacks. On offense , besides Roecklein and Savino, Fred Lang and Steve Staugaitls were outstanding as fullbacks while Phil Mcndonaro and Gary Pennington turned in good halfback performances. To the surprise of the coaches and players alike, a sizeabl e enthusiastic crowd of spectators was on hand for this first taste of Bayport football. From now until their opening game, scrimmages wiU be ordered daily with several sched- uled against the JV squads of other nearby schools. At present , thescheduleis still incomplete, but the opening game will be played at home against the Nyack Boys School of South- ampton October 2. Also , a sec- ond home game has been sched- uled with the Long Island Luther- an High School JV for October 16. A third contest has been scheduled for October 29 against the La Salle MUlitary Academy JV, but the site of the game has not yet been settled. Several other games are stillbeingnego- tlated. After almost three weeks ofpreliminaries, the James WilsonYoung High School football squadfinally got down to the toughbusiness of rugged scrimmagethis past week in Bayport.

On Saturday, there was anintra-squad scrimmage with as-sistant Coach Jesmur's Spartanstaking on assistant Coach Cover-dale's Raiders. The Spartans won6-0 when Mike Roecklein, play-ing quarterback, connected withDom Davino, an end, on a 30-yard pass play and touchdown inthe second quarter.

Standouts for the day on de-fense were Drew Bevis attackle,Mark Rozycki at end, Tim Richt-er at center line backer andBilly Ross and Dennis Sheehan,halfbacks.

On offense, besides Roeckleinand Savino, Fred Lang and SteveStaugaitls were outstanding asfullbacks while Phil Mcndonaroand Gary Pennington turned ingood halfback performances.

To the surprise of the coachesand players alike, a sizeableenthusiastic crowd of spectatorswas on hand for this first tasteof Bayport football.

From now until their openinggame, scrimmages wiU beordered daily with several sched-uled against the JV squads ofother nearby schools.

At present, thescheduleis stillincomplete, but the opening gamewill be played at home againstthe Nyack Boys School of South-ampton October 2. Also, a sec-ond home game has been sched-uled with the Long Island Luther-an High School JV for October16. A third contest has beenscheduled for October 29 againstthe La Salle MUlitary AcademyJV, but the site of the game hasnot yet been settled. Severalother games are stillbeingnego-tlated.
