Vechnology Chief Executive Officer Lance Ong (right)

and Chief Operating Officer Evelyn Foo (left), who are also the co-founders of Vechnology, started their company while they were still at the university. The former Bachelor of Marketing (Honours) students first started their oat cookies trading in UTAR and organic food trading business in Penang industrial zone, at the age of 22, during their semester break.

The duo then came up with another business idea where they tender for placement of snacks vending machines at UTAR. After several attempts, their ideas were finally approved, so two units of snacks vending machines were deployed in Block B and Block P of Kampar Campus. By the end of 2016, they shifted their business model from B2C to B2B to support SMEs and corporates. They became a vending machine supplier instead of being a vending operator.

The success story of UTAR alumni

Chua Li Yee, a journalism alumna from UTAR and her brother Tony Chua co-founded “Rtist”, a website that enables people to rent creative talents (designers).

In 2015, Chua kick-started her entrepreneurial journey by operating a small design agency with only four employees. Chua and her brother soon realised that it was not enough to meet the needs of their clients by just providing design services alone, so they adjusted their service by providing a full package which included design, printing and shipping services.

They realised that many SMEs had design needs but the companies lacked dedicated designing departments to address the demand. Hence, they came up with “Your Creative Department”, a concept that introduced these companies to outsource their creative work to her company.

The first year of running the agency had Chua feeling physically and financially exhausted. The concept “Your Creative Department” felt like nothing more than a slogan, they were struggling to stay afloat. In June 2016, Chua interviewed a local designer who had just returned from Australia and that changed their future. Based on the interviewee’s resume, it was clear that he was not suitable for their agency, but Chua knew of a friend who needed a local designer specialist urgently at an advertising agency.

So, Chua and her brother decided to do things differently by “renting” out designers. In August 2016, their company officially pivoted its business model and became Rtist. And today Rtist provides online and offline handpicked creative hiring solutions to businesses.

YTL Foundation offers Learn from Home Initiative

UTAR students are the latest beneficiaries of YTL Foundation’s Learn from Home Initiative. Like all other tertiary institutions in the country, UTAR students had

to adopt online learning during this period of the MCO whilst staying at home. The University approached YTL Foundation to assist UTAR students in providing additional internet access to facilitate online learning during the temporary closure.

Tan Sri Dr Francis Yeoh Sock Ping said, “We fully understand the stress that the university students are facing currently. We are, therefore, pleased to extend the free Yes 4G prepaid SIM cards with 40 GB of data to UTAR students to support them during this time.”

UTAR President Ir Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat said, “Internet access and the speed of the internet are important for a rewarding online learning experience and for students to access the resources available to successfully complete their coursework.”

UTAR is deeply grateful that YTL Foundation has come forward with its Learn from Home Initiative to provide that much-needed assistance for students to apply for its free Yes 4G prepaid SIM cards with 40 GB of data. This will ensure better equity to internet access among our students especially those who have limited internet access at home.

In the collective effort to follow the standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the Government, Silverlake Lifestyle Community

(SLC) created Scan & Notify, Crowd Tracing and Health Tracker features in hi-hive to facilitate the health and safety checking and monitoring procedures on campus.

Scan & Notify is a new feature that allows the user to practice social distancing with ease. Users can define their preferred range of personal comfort zone and mode of alert, and the app will scan and alert if their comfort zone

has been breached. Crowd Tracing enables users to find where the crowds are in the area of their interest to save time and avoid risks of group gathering and exposure to the virus. Health Tracker enables the community owners to track and monitor their members’ body temperature

before the members enter the campus and its premises.

UTAR is indeed grateful to Silverlake Lifestyle Community for developing these features in hi-hive that are very useful to keep our community safe.

UTAR and Silverlake collaborate to follow SOP for COVID-19 pandemic

With the enforcement of the Movement Control Order, educators and students have transitioned into the world of e-learning with great speed. UTAR undergraduates and lecturers are finding out that learning as well as teaching from the comfort of their respective homes via e-learning during the MCO period can be a unique experience.

Centre for Foundation Studies lecturer Lionel Keith Vytialingam said he wakes up at three or four in the morning to go online to “meet” some students whose internet access is best in the wee hours of the morning. He also compiles WhatsApp voice notes into folders to be sent out to some who have difficulty accessing PowerPoint voice-over files on their phones. All this effort is to ensure that everyone gets to move forward with lessons and exercises. Despite all these, Lionel feels glad that most of his students have been supportive and responsive.

Faculty of Business and Finance lecturer Dr Abdelhak Senadjki commented that e-learning provides students with better control over their own learning. He believes that online learning is a good substitute for traditional learning as it gives them more flexibility and enables them to manage their time more efficiently.

Construction Management lecturer Tan Zi Yi said that online teaching was a rewarding experience for her. She learned to adjust her speed when delivering the online lectures. She also realised that it was necessary to repeat some parts so that every student was on the same page. Tan said although the preparations for the online classes and homework required more time, she has learnt to be more patient and grown accustomed to multitasking.

According to Head of PhD and MPhil Programme Dr Cham Tat Huei, the students have been responding positively toward e-learning. He has been informed by some of his students that they prefer this method of learning, although some students did encounter difficulties with the internet connection. Dr Cham personally thinks that students should enjoy this learning process as online classes offer materials in different formats that make learning more interesting.

The experience of online teaching was indeed insightful for Public Relations lecturer Assoc Prof Dr Cheah Phaik Kin. This experience has taught her to be flexible and she has learnt to embrace technology and explore all that it offers. Dr Cheah said that this period enabled everyone to learn from each other. Students, particularly, learnt new ways of collaborating and using available technologies. Not only during MCO but beyond MCO, this can open many doors of opportunity for them.

Centre for Foundation Studies lecturer Lee Chee Heong noticed that students value online lessons very much. They would activate the screen recording during the lessons even when he forgets sometimes. He believes that students can benefit from the playback of lessons. Students can also do their own self-paced learning. According to him, self-discipline and self-regulated learning are the keys to effective online learning. He believes that students should take charge of their own learning and be proactive to take advantage of the online tools available to them.

Online teaching and learning is a unique experience

This unprecedented pandemic (COVID-19) has certainly made waves all over the world, impacting our work, family life and daily routine, transforming the way we communicate, teach and reach out to our students – all from a

distance, from home.We are lecturers, with many or some students under our charge.

Professionally, we pride ourselves with the power of knowledge and our (self-proclaimed) lifelong learning skills. So in no time, we scrambled to self-learn some new skills and during desperate moments we harassed our tech-savvy colleagues with phone calls and WhatsApp to bail us out from technical difficulties, so that our students can complete the trimester with minimal interruption.

The steep learning curve began. We set up remote classes, pre-record our online lecture, insert voice-overs to our existing lecture materials. We learn how to announce Microsoft Teams’ meeting ID, link, code and password to students before the online classes begin. We now multitask on our computer, talking and looking out to check the chat boxes to see whether students are asking questions and whether we should attend to the question now, or later. Video conferencing tool (VCT) is our most timely “teacher” prompting us to learn about technological devices with instant learning outcomes – the once unknown practices and unfamiliar 21st century skillsets suddenly become our new reality since we started using VCT in our WFH (work-from-home) routine.

Yes, before the MCO, admittedly we were all caught somewhat unprepared for this online venture. We were not used to doing a monologue without having students physically interacting with us. We were not used to talking to our own device or staring at our own image in the computer when delivering our lecture. Despite mastering some online tricks to conduct virtual classes, we felt we were no longer in control in some or most situations. We have lost the “personal touch” with our students – their attentiveness, their group activities and even their distractions (smartphone, non-stop talking, doing own work) in

E-learning is a new reality

a traditional classroom. We cannot reach out to students in time with our advice, care or personal charisma; nor can we exert any form of influence or control from afar.

Reflecting on the online learning episodes, the burden falls first on lecturers to create and deliver the online materials, lessons, and activities as planned. Lecturers have never been busier. As preparation before class, lecturers plan and design the appropriate interactive activities, prepare the PowerPoint materials and preferably do a recording or voice-over of lectures to be uploaded in the Web-Based Learning Environment (WBLE).

Prior to the online class, lecturers must first set up a meeting ID for students to join. Attendance is taken “creatively” via chat function and participation in the quiz. We might recap what was taught last week, get updates on any pending coursework progress; engage students via quizzes, YouTube video, TedTalk, online chat and sharing of useful links, resources and materials. After class, for students who did not attend the class synchronously, we endeavour to upload the recording of the entire online lecture or to contact the students one-by-one via email to know the students’ whereabouts and wellbeing.

Keeping students connected and stay focused during home-based learning using digital tools is never an easy task for the lecture. Remote classes require more attention and engagement as students may get their “device” to attend classes, and not their mind and body. So another challenge for us is to know how students are responding to our ongoing lecture, especially when they choose to stay silent and do not unmute their microphone to talk to us remotely.

Lecturers are getting used to own monologue without any response from students, be it verbal or non-verbal. Hence, in a remote lecture, we are happy to notice how the usually “quiet” students can be responsive via the chat function, e.g. texting questions, responding to a poll and giving feedback. The texting mode seems attractive to students who prefer not to be vocal in class, hence it allows us to connect with students via messages and responses that can be conducive for their learning. The quality of submitted work is still encouraging despite remote learning, which proves that learning outcomes can be achieved if our students remain engaged and interested in the topics we bring virtually.

As we uphold the principles of student engagement and teacher empowerment, our future instructional design shall focus on conducive constructive alignment consisting of course learning outcome(s), learning activities and assessments. We shall plan to conduct future lessons with stimulated interactive class discussion, guiding them towards completion of group or individual assignment to demonstrate intended course learning outcomes.

We have gone through a steep learning curve that is stressful for everyone – lecturers, students, the supporting staff, the faculty and the University at large. The incidents are preparing us for future virtual classes that are well-designed, durable and self-paced towards a more personalised and flexible education. The good news is, we are one step closer to conducting Massive Open Online Learning (MOOC) targeted at learners from all over the world, all walks of life and instructional design considerations are primarily for the convenience of students, instructors, and institutions, without compromising the learning outcomes.

Virtual classroom and remote learning are now a new reality for educators. Looking forward, e-learning is very timely and beneficial to students to develop their digital credentials, to prepare them for future normalcy, i.e. the remote work life and less structured workplace experience that requires better task management and time management skills. As we are now travelling a path less frequented and venturing into an unknown future world, let’s not forget our leadership role to support others emotionally and spiritually, by showcasing our resilience and patience to our loved ones – physically and remotely.

The road to self-learning and discovery during the MCO

Despite the challenge to stay indoors during the Movement Control Order (MCO) issued by the government, many students from various programmes have expressed their positivity in coping with the MCO through e-learning sessions they attended online. For many, it was a new way of attending classes while learning in a fun way.

I have been actively studying at home via e-learning. I intend to use this time wisely to revise the earlier topics and catch up with the lessons I have missed in the past. If I have any questions or doubts regarding the lesson, I would contact my lecturers through social media.

All lessons have been converted to online learning. While it is a viable alternative, I am still adapting to it. Self-studying for me is a change that I need to get used to, but I’m glad that I am improving and in the process, I am also picking up new skills.

I have been staying at home and doing online studies through Microsoft Teams and UTAR Wble. If I have any questions or enquiries, I will consult my tutors via email. Not having face-to-face interaction is a little inconvenient but I am getting used to it. I would like to encourage all students to do self-study as this is the best time for us to be independent.

I have been busy with e-learning. Currently, I am trying to adopt active learning methods to keep myself on track with my studies. I’m also trying to improve my study skills and prepare for the next trimester.

Since online learning started, I have attended all the online classes. Online classes are certainly a good way for university students to learn from their lecturers and tutors during this period. Doing 3D Animation assignments on my laptop is not as effective as using the advanced computers in the UTAR labs. I certainly hope to return to UTAR Campus as soon as possible.

I was quite upset initially when I found that all the projects I was working on had to be paused. Then I realised that the safety of the community and the people in the country was more important. I’ve attended e-classes and I think it is really good. It reminded me again of how technology has eased our lives.

Kon10 devised 3D-printed face shields and inhaler spacer for frontliners

UTAR donated 1,000 face shields to Assunta Hospital on 21 April 2020 and another 1,000 face shields to Hospital Ampang on 22 April 2020. The 3D-printed face shields were made in Sungai Long Campus by Kon10 Innovation. The face shields were delivered to both Assunta Hospital and Hospital Ampang representatives respectively.

UTAR donated 1,000 face shields to the frontline medical staff of Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, also known as Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HTCM), on 15 April 2020. The donation was received by HTCM Senior Manager Yasmin Rahimi. The face shields were made by Kon10 Innovation.

Sponsored by ECM Libra Foundation, a new batch of 1,500 face shields was produced by UTAR students (Kon10 Innovation) on 17 April 2020. The face shields were received by Board of Trustee of ECM Libra Foundation Lim Beng Choon (right). The face shields were distributed to needy frontliners in Negeri Sembilan.

UTAR Unovate Centre Start-up incubatee, Kon10 Innovation devised 3D-printed face shields and the inhaler spacer for COVID-19 frontliners. The 3D-printed face shields were the ingenious work of four innovative UTAR Engineering students who have set-up a small

start-up and contributed their time and creativity to support the healthcare frontliners. Kon10 Innovation is a registered enterprise with Lim Kai Wen as its leader and

founder. The other team members include Lim Tyng Xian, Sin Chia Ling and Ooi Hsin Yein. Kon10 Innovation team members felt that they needed to do something for all the dedicated medical staff and enforcement officers who were out there battling COVID-19. Hence, they created the 3D-printed face shields and the inhaler spacer.

Lim said, “The challenge was to make simple designs while reducing the production time. Aside from that, there were alterations made to meet users’ feedback and to accommodate the aspect of comfort and safety. In a day, we can produce approximately 150 pieces of 3D-printed face shield. It takes 22 minutes to print and less than 30 seconds to assemble the face shield. Currently, the face shields are distributed to Klinik Kesihatan, Hospital Kuala Kubu Bharu, Manipal Hospital Klang and others.”

Lim added, “There are industries who have volunteered to sponsor in terms of fabrication of moulds to accommodate plastic injection by using polycarbonate. With this access, we will be able to produce roughly 6,000 – 8,000 units which can be distributed nationwide. Our face shield designs are also in the stage of implementing plastic injection to accommodate hundreds to thousands of production rate per day.”

“I think Malaysians should think out of the box and use any kind of knowledge they may have to help out with the current situation. We believe that technologies such as 3D-printing and open-source programming are easily accessible by the society and we should utilise them to provide more ideas and solutions,” enthused Lim.
