to become a man and die as our substitute.

Psalm 137, a lesser-read psalm, emphasizes Lent’s calm. The human author recounts his exile in Babylon. As a prisoner, his captors forced him to put his life on hold. Furthermore, his exile helped him realize mankind’s separation from God due to sin.

“By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. There on the poplars we hung our harps, for there our captors asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded songs of joy; they said, ‘Sing us one of the songs of Zion!’ How can we sing the songs of the LORD while in a foreign land?” (Psalm 137:1-4)

These powerful words convey despair. The author and his countrymen were exiled from their beloved Zion (Jerusalem). Their own sinfulness was their undoing: idolatry, materialism, and pleasure-seeking led to their nation’s downfall.

Unlike other psalms, Psalm 137 has no happy ending. The writer sadly admits that his sinfulness caused the predicament, and there is no easy answer or quick fi x.

Lent leads us to the same conclusion. Our sin exiles us from God. There is no man-made solution. Thank God that he provides the only solution for our sin through His Son, Jesus. In him there is restoration, peace, and hope.

May our Lenten meditation allow us to rest, relax, and refl ect on the undeserved and unforced love of God in Christ!

The 2011 Lakeside Lutheran Forensics team is having another strong showing. The season began at DeForest High School where the team placed third among 28 teams from around the state. Then on February 7, Lakeside hosted the Capitol Conference Tournament where more than 230 students from the Conference competed against each other in 16 speaking categories. Of the 12 Conference schools that competed, Lakeside Lutheran took home the Conference Championship with a total of 256 points. The trend continued as the Lakeside Forensics Team advanced all 25 participants on to the District competition at DeForest High School on February 28. Finally, on Monday, March 7 24 of the 25 participants advanced to the State Tournament which will take place on Friday, April 15 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At the state competition Lakeside will again be competing to repeat last year’s performance when they received the prestigious Excellence in Speech Award, an award given to the top fi ve percent of participating schools in the state. God’s blessings to the team as they compete at the next level.

Forensics Team Returns with Boldness, Advances to State

champions in basketball, music, and forensics. But more than that, God blessed these teachers with a love and concern for the spiritual welfare of the nearly 5,000 students who have attended Lakeside since it was founded. Students don’t just hear God’s Word for one hour a day in religion class. Teachers show students how to judge what they watch and read not by secular ideals, but by true Christian standards. Students learn to take care of their bodies because they are gifts from God. In science class, students marvel at how wonderfully God has created us and put orderliness to creation.

It is painfully obvious that the remaining $3.4 million debt of the 2003 addition is hindering the mission of Lakeside Lutheran. Advanced Placement classes can not be developed. Technology use in the classroom is hindered. Creating a stronger partnership with our Federation, expanding an outreach program, and increasing fi nancial aid to students in need are all future programs currently put on hold. In October 2010 the Board of Regents authorized formation of the Resource Development Committee (RDC). The RDC has implemented a two-phase approach with an outcome to raise a minimum of $1.5 million to pay down the principle in the next three years. This program is called Lakeside Lutheran: Foundation for Faith, Life, Forever.

Before any plan was implemented, the current, monthly interest payments had to be addressed. The mortgage was refi nanced, a generous estate donation has been applied, and a $200 debt-reduction fee will be added to each child’s tuition. In Phase I, a core group of dedicated, Lakeside Lutheran donors will be asked to prayerfully consider participating. In Phase II, each Federation Congregation will be asked to hold a Lakeside Lutheran Sunday in the fall of 2011, and individual members will have the opportunity to assist in this energizing plan.

The devil is our enemy. He works relentlessly to make sin more important than God’s Word. The devil makes strife and disagreement a higher priority than nurture in Christian truths. We would surely fail in our fi ght against the devil if it weren’t for God’s help. It invokes the image Christ uses in Matthew 7:24-27: “Everyone who hears these words and puts them into practice is like a wise man who builds his house on a rock. Rain came, streams rose, winds blew and beat against the house. Yet it didn’t fall, because it had a foundation on the rock.” Please pray for your Lutheran high school and join us in supporting this ministry! Join us in supporting “Lakeside Lutheran: Foundation for Faith, Life, Forever.”

All in Good Fun...Faculty and Staff Lead the Way

Elementary School Spelling Bee Winners

Students, faculty and staff at Lakeside Lutheran took time out in February to celebrate the annual Winter Carnival with class competitions and dress up days. Borrowing from the idea of Senior Friend Day when students “purchase” a senior to dress up, the Student Council offered faculty and staff in the sale this year. In the photo, from left to right are: Mr. Gerry Walta, Miss Jackie Colletta, Mr. Steve Lauber (in back), Mr. Jim Buege (in back), Mr. Andy Asmus, Mr. Jason Nickels, and fi nally, Assistant Principal for Student Life Pastor Don Schultz, complete with a pink wig and ukelele. Thank you to all of the purchasers and to their cooperative subjects.

The Lakeside Lutheran High School English Department, under the direction of English teacher, Daniel Kuehl, hosted its annual elementary school spelling bee at Lakeside. Students from area Lutheran elementary schools began the competition with a written exam in their own schools. Qualifying students moved on to Phase 2 of the competition at the high school that included a list of 50 dictated words. Those who passed the second round of testing were invited to compete in the oral competition, which involved approximately 25 spellers from

Grades 5 & 6 Grades 7 & 8

the 5th and 6th grade group and 25 spellers from the 7th and 8th grade group.

History Is Made...

The 2010-2011 Lakeside Lutheran boys basketball team made school history this year when it earned its spot at the WIAA Division 3 State Basketball Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison. Although the boys came up short in the semi-fi nal game at the state tournament verses LaCrosse Aquinas, their season ended with record-setting excitement. The team of 17 guys is loaded with seniors who hoped this would be the year of the Warrior, and it was as they entered the WIAA playoff season with just a single loss to Lodi in December. They had a bye in the Regional Semi-Final, then moved onto the Regional Final versus Evansville with a win of 64-60. In the Sectional Semi-Final they met up with Clinton with a solid win of 74-59. The Warriors had another strong fi nish versus Prairie du Chien at the Sectional Final, clinching a victory of 56-42 and a trip to the state basketball tournament in Madison.

* The following information is reprinted with permission from the Watertown Daily Times:

The loss (at the state tournament) brings to an end the careers of 12 seniors that rewrote the Lakeside record books this year: a Capitol Conference North Division title; a school record 25 victories; and the fi rst-ever trip to the WIAA state tournament. It’s quite a legacy to leave.

“It has been a very special group of 12 seniors that have stuck with the program for four years,” Head Coach Jim Bauer said. “They accomplished many things this year that no other team in Lakeside’s 50-year history has done. They have set the bar very high for future teams. From winning a conference title, to consecutive wins, to total wins, just a lot of neat things that this group has accomplished this year that hopefully future Lakeside teams will look to.”

While future Warriors will look up to this team, the current

group is admittedly struggling to see their time together come to a close. “That is the toughest part,” Jake Jarnigo said. “We have played together since grade school really...against or with each other. That really is the tough part...never being able to play again, together.”

Bauer understands that sentiment from his seniors, but capped his season with one last compliment for his team.

“When you come up all four years and you have been together for four years when it comes to an end, it is hard to accept,” Bauer said. “Given the fact that there were 12 seniors, there was some real unselfi shness that had to go into this. There were several seniors that were not in the rotation, but were just outstanding in practice night after night after night. Every single one of them contributed in their own way to the program and the success they had.”

“The best part of it was the guys committed to a type of work ethic that would allow them to get better every week. I think in those two sectional games were the best basketball we played all season. To see them continue to improve and reach for their potential all the way up until the end. It just didn’t happen for us (at the state tournament). You like to try to get a group to leave their footprints in the sand. This group has set a pretty high bar for future teams to go after.”

Members of the team include, back row (l to r): Assistant Coach Paul Bauer, Kyle Stelse, Caleb Gartner, Seth Nehls, Sam Kuehl, Eric Koester, Craig Wilke, Briton Peterson, Jacob Schneider, Head Coach Jim Bauer. Front row (l to r): Assistant Coach Ted Klug, Tyler Doyle, Jeff Klug, Grey Davis, Connor Vredeveld, Jake Jarnigo, Brandon Schmitt, Aaron Allister, Jon Demcak, Chris Lanham and Assistant Coach Dan Kuehl. Congratulations on an unforgettable season!

Two Lakeside Lutheran High School wrestlers made history at this year’s WIAA State Wrestling Tournament in Madison. For the fi rst time ever, Tyler Fussner, a 189-pound senior with a record of 36-7, and Ben Ewings, a junior heavyweight with a record of 45-7, earned spots on the championship podium, taking home sixth place medals. Tyler will be moving onto college next year. However, Ben, will return to the Lakeside mat as a senior. Ben started wrestling when he was in 5th grade with the youth wrestling program at Lakeside. Refl ecting on his fi rst match at the tournament, Ben said, “It was hard to lose the fi rst one. There was one take down that could have gone either way that turned into fi ve points. That was the turning point in the match. It went by so fast here. I wish I could have wrestled better. I thank God for getting me this far. I’m proud of being the fi rst at Lakeside to place here (along with Tyler), and I was the fi rst wrestler from Lakeside

to get a pin here. Tyler began wrestling at the age of four in New Jersey and trained at the Advanced Camp in Madison after his family moved to Wisconsin. In the state tournament, Tyler had a fi rst round bye because of his placement as the Evansville sectional champion. He was pinned three times at state but his 4-2 decision over a Tomahawk wrestler in a Round 1 consolation match proved to be the biggest of his career. “It clinched my goal for the year,” Tyler said. “I was trying to make an apprearance on the podium. With that win, I was able to do that.” Tyler is still weighing his collegiate options and may wrestle at the next level. Congratulations to both young men for outstanding seasons. Four other wrestlers (Riley Wingate, Conor Fussner, Mitch Huebner and Frank Welke) went on to the sectional tournament but weren’t able to make an appearance at the state tournament. Last Christmas a group of Lakeside Lutheran sophomores traveled to Abiding Shepherd in Cottage Grove to assist with the church’s Christmas preparations. Pastor Nathan Krause refl ected on the service of the students: “They were instrumental in helping us with the huge number of kids we had this year. Most helpful was the time they spent in the craft station, snack time and our grand fi nale rehearsal – making sure the appropriate children remained on schedule and with their own age groups.” Pastor Krause added, “Just a big word of thanks to Pastor Schultz and his sophomore class for all their help. We would not have had such a successful Christmas for Kids without their help.” Thank you to all for serving!

Undefeated Seasons for Two Lakeside Lutheran Teams

April/May 2011

Lakeside Lutheran High School senior, Brooke Hinstorff, signed a letter of intent to attend Valparaiso University in Indiana. Hinstorff will major in nursing and attend the school on a track and fi eld scholarship. Hinstorff has fi nished in the top eight in all three of her trips to the WIAA Division 2 state track and fi eld meets in the long jump. Hinstorff fi nished fourth last season and third as a sophomore at the state meet. She also set a new school record of 17 feet-11 1/2 inches during her junior season. Hinstorff was also named to the 2009 and 2010 Wisconsin Track Coaches Association’s All-State team in the long jump. She also won a medal at the state meet in the 400-meter relay as a freshmen. She will likely continue to compete in the sprint events at the next level as well. Tickets Available Now for ‘Ice House Madrigals’Tickets are now on sale in the school offi ce for the comedy “Ice House Madrigals” directed by Marcus Buch. Reserved seating is available by calling the Lakeside Lutheran offi ce at 920-648-2321. Tickets for adults are $6. Students in grades K to 12 are $3. Performances are scheduled for April 14 at 7 p.m. and April 16 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The play depicts a crew of 50-year-old Norwegian Minnesotan ice fi shing buddies. They concoct a plan to entice their friend, Oskar, out of his retirement in Florida and back up to Minnesota to go ice fi shing with them again. Their enticement is to build the “grandmother” of all icehouses — a giant “ice chateau.” To the absolute joy of his friends, Oskar gets on board with the plan. Confl ict and misunderstandings grow between the fi shermen and their wives, ending with wildly comical confrontations inside the icehouse as the story hilariously unfolds.
