REFRACTIVE SURGERY…..WHY BOTHER?

For patients who are significantly myopic it will

change their life Patients look to their Optometrist and their staff for

information and guidance about refractive surgery Refractive surgery is an “event” in the patients

visual life – like their first glasses or contact lenses – or their first bifocal

Their eye doctor looks after their visual life and it is a responsibility to advise them on all the options and choices that they will face in their visual life

Why wouldn’t you ask?

THE SCIENCENOVEMBER 2014 – FDA PRESENTS COMPREHENSIVE STUDY ON LASIK QUALITY OF LIFE PROJECT

“The Refractive Surgery Alliance (RSA) is grateful to the FDA, NIH, and DOD for conducting this comprehensive study,” said Dr. Kugler. “The data confirm what patients and their refractive surgeons have known for many years: That Lasik is a safe and effective treatment for the correction of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.”*

PREVIEW CONSULTATION

Timeline of “curious” to “serious “ is about 22 months.

Preview consultations can be done to pre-screen patients and to find out if refractive surgery is an option, prior to the patient being out of their contact lenses.

Testing will be done and the Horizon Optometrist will look it over to give an opinion if the patient is a candidate or not. If the patient is a candidate, they will be advised to book an eye exam with their optometrist for a full eye exam, if required and pre-op.

Your office will receive a note from HLVC to inform you of any testing results and opinions given by the HLVC Optometrist.

REFERRAL PROTOCOL

Patients will require a recent full examination; not necessary to have patient out of contacts at this point.

Dry eyes should be treated and controlled before assessment at Horizon.

Referral forms should be completely filled out and sent to Horizon.  1. OD’s are not REQUIRED to have a separate visit for a laser consult.2. OD’s are not REQUIRED to perform a cycloplegic refraction in all cases. Cycloplegic refraction is still required for all hyperopes, however.

REFERRAL PROCESS

The patient will be booked for a laser consult with the Horizon OD after the patient has been out of contact lenses for the appropriate time. Charts are reviewed by the surgeon and they will make the final determination of patient suitability.

The Horizon Optometrist will inform the referring doctor of the outcome of the assessment and recommended treatment. Horizon will notify the referring doctor if a candidate is rejected.

The HLVC consultation process is smoother for the patient and for referring doctors. This does not preclude from doing any testing that is necessary for full screening and counselling of the patients, including the cycloplegic – OD’s will use thier clinical judgment to determine what is necessary to determine if a patient is a good candidate.

OPEN OR SPECIFIC REFERRAL

In some instances the OD will want to refer the patient to a particular surgeon.

Patient preference.

Open referrals allow HLVC staff to direct the patient to the next opening in the surgery slate.

Patients may have surgery sooner.

Patients will normally see one of the HLVC OD’s or surgeon on Day one following iLASIK, or on Day 3 – 4 following PRK. The referring OD may be asked to remove the bandage CL following PRK.

The patient will be sent home with the drops they need to use and careful instructions.

A one week appointment will be set up for the patient at your office.

Page 16: HORIZON 101 BY SUSAN SIROSKI AND KIM NESTEROFF CLINIC DIRECTORS.

Post-op forms will be sent electronically to your office for your use.

Fill in the form completely and fax back to Horizon. If there are questions to the surgeon, the staff at HLVC will direct the form to the surgeon and then send the answer back to you.

Patients should be seen for 1 week, 1, 3, 6 and 12 month follow-up.

Driver’s license restrictions should be removed as soon as patient is within parameters; HLVC does not contact SGI.
