I hope you are all not too bored due to the recent events. As you know the Scout Association has had to stop all face to face activities for a while. Here are some things we suggest you could do to keep earning your badges. We have two badges to suggest, the community impact and the digital citizen stage badges. We have picked these because all Beavers, Cubs and Scouts can join in. For the community impact badge, you have to help your local community through these difficult times. You could help elderly or vulnerable people who cannot leave their homes by creating a picture or maybe just writing them a card. Since we are all at home and have to chat virtually the digital citizen badge would be an excellent badge to attempt. The main focus of this badge is to show that you can use technology in a variety of ways.

https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/4281/community-impact-staged-activity-badge/?cat=11,18,773&moduleID=10 There are also plenty of other badges you can work on at home. Stay safe and try and live your life as normally as you can. Written by George Stevenson (senior Patrol Leader) and Harry Evison-Williams (Patrol Leader) 2nd Stamford Scouts.

100 Mile Run

On Friday 6 March, John Burrows (2nd Stamford Kestrels Leader) started his quest to run 100 miles in 72 hours, to raise funds for a new Scout hut and also the Scout Association. John is raising money for a new Scout HQ at Empingham Road site, where currently Beavers, Cubs and Scouts meet for their local meetings. He’s hoping to complete the London marathon on Sunday 4th October. The last 7 miles of his run he completed the Burghley 7 with over 1242 runners beside him. Also, on Saturday John invited any 2nd Stamford Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and any other willing volunteers to run beside him. On Friday John was accompanied by Kingfisher Leader Paul Scholes, Gemma Scholes and Rutland radio presenter Rob Persani. During the run, around 30 willing volunteers from all different sections manned the 2 water stations at different points across the race. James Burrows (2nd Stamford)

Deeping Scout Group has a 15-seater Ford Transit, first registered in 2011. It is legal to be driven by anybody over 21 but under 70 years who has held a full licence for over 2 years. Specifically, there is no requirement for a D1 on the driver’s licence as the vehicle weight falls under the limit which would need that class on a license, and it is insured for any authorised driver . Any Leaders who wish to become an authorised driver feel free to contact us (below). Your Group/Section just needs a s.19 permit available from the Scout Information Centre and costs £5. Stamford and Bourne District will have a Permit, so Explorers and SASU will be covered – check with Roy at Scout Shop. Cost for Scout/Guides is £40 for a full day and £20 for half day plus you need to return it full of fuel. We generally don't charge if you need to pick it up the evening prior to a hire and return it after use the following day. If you would like to book, please get in touch with Gary Ridgway on 07740 054908 [email protected] or Ken Roxbee-Levitt on 07818 205319 [email protected]

Elsea Park Christmas Shoebox Scheme (in association with Hereward Doctors surgery) to make shoeboxes wrapped and filled for disadvantaged residents in the area (about 25 in the end). The Scouts made Christmas cards and photo frames to go in the boxes as well, then helped deliver them. We loved working on the project and getting involved with the community - hopefully we will be doing more things like this in the future! We had an article in the Bourne Local,

Scouts have also been working on First Aid badge – no dummy was harmed in the demonstration shown Three of our scouts have been working towards their Bronze Crest Awards and have been successful! I think it has been a great thing to work on for the Scouts that have an interest in science and technology. They can go on to do silver and gold as they get older. https://www.crestawards.org/crest-bronze Georgia Galloway ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Jamboree On The Air

JOTI/JOTA 2019 The third weekend of October sees Scouts from around the world take part in the world’s largest Scouting events, Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) and Jamboree On The Internet (JOTI). 2019 was 1st Ketton Scout Groups fourth JOTI and we were determined to make it our best yet. Friday was the set-up and a nice gathering of Leaders, Young leaders and most of the Senior Scouts (PL’s & APL’s) turned our ordinary Scout hut

Page 7: Horbling Group with Team from 4 Seasons Window Solutions (see … · 2020-05-29 · Horbling Group with Team from 4 Seasons Window Solutions (see page 4) Comments and contributions

into a hub of Global communication. 15 laptops, most with duplication screens showed the users and observers the text based conversations

between our hut and the rest of the world. Saturday morning the Cubs arrived, everyone received a

quick demonstration of the web site and a reminder of the Internet Safety Rules and then they were released into the JOTI Scouting world. Conversations are initiated, JOTI ID’s are collected and pins marking the location of the contact go into the map of the world. The rest of the Scout section arrive along with one of the Beaver colonies filling the room and raising the volume considerably. It was fantastic to see Scouts, Cubs and Beavers sat at the same terminal engrossed in the shared experience. “what colour is your scarf?”, apparently you can really confused some people by calling it a “necker”.” What is your favourite game?” turned up a few new games for us to try and a few that health and safety would definitely never allow. “Are you taking part in a special event for JOTI ?” , all of these and a few strange ones are questions asked by and of our Scouts. The Beavers time is up and they gather excitedly to tell their amazed parents they put “That pin..Yes that pin!!” into the world map. After a bit of exercise and a fantastic dinner its back onto the computers, as Daylight marches around the world and new countries and potential contacts are now awake and within our grasp. ..well at their fingertips. I always find it amazing that as you walk around the room looking at the screens you see who the Scouts are talking to…. Scotland, Norway, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Australia to name but a few. Bed time approaches and the computers and lights are switched off leaving the world to carry on without us, and then something miraculous happens… less than half an hour passes and the whole room is asleep! I know …all the Leaders present couldn’t believe it either. The morning arrives and after a small breakfast (cereals, toast, sausage and bacon rolls and fruit with biscuit chasers) the Cubs and Scouts get back

into JOTI and the search for some of the more elusive contact countries starts, Through the day the Cubs reluctantly depart and the second Beaver colony arrives. The Scouts once again ” buddy up“ and guide the Beavers through what to do, it’s not long before they have an impressive list of contact countries. Its in the last hour of our event that one of the Scouts discovers that there is a British Scout group on a small Island in the South Atlantic, so all computers in the room put the call out for anyone from the Falklands. Sadly 1st Kettons JOTI comes to an end, the Scouts and Beavers go home, the equipment and decorations all go away and the hut is returned to normal. I know the Question you are asking is “did the Scouts get in touch with the Falklands?” … well no, but later that night a ping from my phone indicated a message that read..”Hello Ketton Scouts from the Falklands !”, a

few messages later and it seems a valuable link has been forged between the two Groups. Over the JOTI weekend 1st Ketton saw over 60 of its members actively

make over 700 contacts from 77 different countries around the world and finding out some interesting facts as we went. The question asked by our Leaders as we finished was… How can we make next year better? well you will have to come along and see. Did anyone manage to join in the “Special” JOTI earlier in April?

Adult Training Firstly I appreciate that many Scouters are busy working to support the national effort to get through this crisis, there are others who we know are concerned about vulnerable members of their family, others are concerned about their jobs and the financial pressure this places on their families. Scouting is important but your family comes first. Scouting can however provide you with a support network of like-minded friends who will always be prepared to have a chat with you. Remember Scouting is family and we should be supporting each other. For those with time on their hands over the coming weeks, there is online training and information events aimed at getting ourselves fully prepared to restart Scouts face to face as soon as it’s safe to do so. As mentioned in National Communications, now is the time to focus on any Safeguarding and Safety training. You can already complete most of your mandatory training online and we trying an online safety course this week. Details of this have been sent to those needing the module. Compass If you are unsure whether you need to complete these, please check your record on Compass https://compass.scouts.org.uk/login/User/Login. If you do not already have a log in name and password it is easy to set up and all you need is your membership number. Choose the register as a new user and if you get stuck please ask me for help. Validation We are available to do validations and we have helped people complete their training / wood badges over the last few weeks. Contact me at [email protected] if you would like to do this and we can arrange. I can also be contacted on teams and on 07764 162444. You can also talk to any training advisor (TA) and these include Chris Mayhew, Dyfrig Jenkins, Paul Plumridge, Ray Dennis, Howard Nelson, Michelle Nelson, Chas Anderson, Bridget Palmer, Daniel Day, Doug Cobbold, Heidi Latronico-Ferris, Ian

Archery Course 9 Leaders, from Stamford and Bourne Groups, took part in a weekend training session at Horbling HQ in March, plus 3 Leaders from nearby Districts. Congratulations to all 12 successful Permit holders, who are now authorised to run Archery sessions for Scouts! Equipment is held at Horbling HQ and at Shacklewell, and if you have a suitable area to set up “butts” (I think that is the term?) a session could be either organised at your site or at these locations. Contact Doug and your request will be passed to appropriate Robin Hood Leader. Thanks to Margaret Everitt for organisation, and to Helen Robinson GSL, for use of premises and fantastic help with catering! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Some of the badges that can be done from home and I am sure there are some from the 50 plus Scout section that could be done at home. I have ordered in extra stock of these badges. If you find others that can be done from home email me and I will ensure I have stock available.

GANG SHOW NEWS Another postponement forced by the current situation, are the Workshop Sessions which were planned. When possible, Gang Show will return! Further information, please contact Steve [email protected] mobile 0779 371 9707 or Chas - District Gang Show Chair Mobile 0778 228 5351

CONGRATULATIONS! The 2020 list of Awards has been published by Scout Association HQ, and although the usual St Georges Day ceremonies cannot take place, we honour our Leaders who feature in the list. Some have already been mentioned in previous Newsletters but deserve another mention! Trevor has a box full of Certificates, Service Badges, Wood Badges, and maybe a few surprises….but the District Awards night cant happen for a little while, so be assured you haven’t been forgotten if you were expecting a presentation for your achievements!

DC’s Lead!!! First may I say I hope you are all keeping well during this national emergency. Hopefully many of you are managing to deliver some form of Scouting via digital technology. I don’t have access to all Group’s Facebook sites but for those that I do I can see that many of you are adapting to this strange world. Australian Scouting has of course had Lone Scouts making contact with each other (via CB radio originally) for decades - so in a way this is nothing new, we just have to learn how to do it effectively. There is a wealth of initiatives out there, and if your Section is yet to take up their OSM licence, paid for by County, as part of your Membership Fees, well now is the time to take action and make use of the Badges Online facility with your members. I cannot see the youth data but I can see in number form the progress through the badges awarded. The big activity for April is #CampAtHome #CampAtHome is an initiative from Northumberland Scouts! Calling all young people from across Stamford & Bourne, the UK, and the Wider World. COVID-19 (Coronavirus) may have changed the way we do things, but it won’t stop Scouts camping! Northumberland Scouts are organising a month-long Virtual Camp across April, from the 01/04-30/04/20. Ending with an attempt to set the world record for the Largest Virtual Camp on 30/04/2020, when we’d like as many S&B members as possible to participate. Take up the challenge and let’s keep on ‘virtually camping’, here are the “Rules”; We’re asking you all… Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Network, Leaders, Parents, and Young People interested in joining in the fun to: ✅ Pack a bag ✅ Build a den at home / pitch a tent in the garden/ hang up a hammock (whatever you can) ✅ Sleep in your shelter of choice ✅ Build a ‘campfire’ (real or virtual)

Page 11: Horbling Group with Team from 4 Seasons Window Solutions (see … · 2020-05-29 · Horbling Group with Team from 4 Seasons Window Solutions (see page 4) Comments and contributions

✅ Take part in a ‘Scouty activity’ ✅ Help with cooking a meal. MOST IMPORTANTLY… Each night you participate share a creative photo, video, blog, etc. to our social media using the hashtag: #CampAtHome – Twitter: @stambournescout Then share them with your leaders and friends to show that although we can’t meet “Face to Face” Scouting doesn’t stop! Each Young Person who takes part will be entitled to 1️ Night Away for each night they participate (as long as they aren’t sleeping in their bed). Meaning you could get up to an extra 30 Nights Away if you take on the challenge! Technology

Since the lock down started all active adults have all been provided with a County managed Office 365 account and a Scouting email address giving you free access to a range of Microsoft software, in particular Microsoft Teams Have you given it a go yet? Each Group has all its adults set up in a single team and you can each invite people to an on-line meeting. Not tried it yet, well now is the time to give it a go. It will be at its simplest if everyone has set up and is using their Scouting email address, but at this time I have no real measure of that but encourage you to get it set up as you all appear within teams using that Scouting email address. However, you can invite people to a meeting with other email addresses. Why not try it first with just one other member of your Sections leadership. So far, I have attended Group Executives with 1st Thurlby & 2nd Stamford, held a GSL’s meeting and a management chat with Greg. Shortly a District Executive will take place this way too. In the first week of use I drove 100 miles less, not only being

green but saving me the time it takes to drive 100 miles. As a Group, why not set up a time to have an online Coffee Club to stay in touch and have a weekly chat. You might find its 30 minutes well spent. Of course, we have other older technology, the landline. Why not phone a friend or former adult from your Group to see how they are doing. The County has been spending a lot of time on improving its delivery of support during this time so do please refer to https://www.lincolnshirescouts.org.uk/member-resources/covid-19-information. There are some 14 further targeted page of guidance beneath this to keep you informed about changes during the lockdown period. Changes 2020 This takes me on to changes coming out of HQ. For the Association to manage within its reserves, with so much of our expenditure fixed and its income reduced from the closure of all HQ camping sites and much lower Scout Store sales, many HQ Staff have been furloughed for the duration of this lockdown of course putting progress of the Association by our employees into standstill. However important changes do have to proceed, and you will all know about the sad death of a youth member in Wales. This has resulted in a review of the Activity Rules, the approval of activities, all of which ultimately need my authority, and a revised NAN Form. I have got to decide on some local bits to these new rules and will send those out separately in the coming days. Together with this you will have received a reminder from Tim Kidd (and ourselves, locally) if any of your mandatory Safeguarding and or Safety training has never been completed or needs renewal. The need to renew these items has recently been extended to Executive members as they are responsible for these items in your Group/District. You will find links to all the training elsewhere in this newsletter. If you have had these chasers do please complete this training asap. Further to these changes an amended POR will be published this month. Above all STAY SAFE and thank you for everything you are doing for Scouting in Stamford & Bourne.

Chairs Tail

This is the most challenging Tail I have written in 6 years. We are in uncharted territory with the challenge to us all as individuals and as members of our communities, voluntary organisations and our working lives still difficult to fully comprehend. In my own life I have become used to 5 or 6 different phone and video conferences in a week as we try and maintain essential services in the Courts Service and manage life in the prison. There have also been a number of Scout related meetings which have informed Trevor and I about the serious challenges facing the Scout Association nationally. Hopefully this information has been cascaded to all Groups and you have been able to inform your parents. Virtual Scouting is taking place and I have heard of a number of initiatives undertaken by individual Leaders and Sections. If you are undertaking such activities please share your ideas with others in the spirit of Scouting. District facilities like national facilities are all shut down. Fortunately the overheads at Shacklewell and Whitewater are not excessive so while we face some losses over the coming year they can be absorbed within our current finances. All the National Events some Groups have signed up for now appear to be cancelled. Eurojam is postponed to 2021 with hopefully all those booked to attend still being able to participate Some events and activities may never come back and certainly not in the format they have taken place to date. This applies to the wider world, if the Courts Service can be run via video and phone links, the future will I hope see fewer long journeys to short meetings, and hopefully will start to truly benefit our environment. At County Scout level we are looking to undertake appointments virtually, and much training and meetings can be undertaken using Microsoft Teams and Zoom. While these have some disadvantages the journey times saved and carbon footprint benefits are serious considerations. Trevor for instance was able to attend two Execs virtually saving 80 miles in travel and around 4 hours of travel time.

I have been impressed of tales of how people are helping each other, My wife Bernie is now a Health Volunteer and others I know are shopping for housebound friends which in my case has led to some interesting contents in my shopping trolley. One must not forget those affected personally by this terrible virus, by now I am sure most of us will know someone who has either had the disease or even more sadly has passed away. That is clearly the most tragic part of what is happening. My final message is to wish you all well and urge you to stay as safe as you can. Please remember to take care of your mental health as well as your physical health and look out for others who may be feeling overwhelmed As part of that:

• Be aware of the volume of your news consumption on the subject, reduce it if it is making you feel anxious or distressed and in particular consider whether what you get from some social media and newspaper sites is balanced

Take care and stay safe

Greg
