Opening Session

Building the world of tomorrow cannot be achieved without the youth of today. However, a majority of people in

Europe believe that their children will be worse off than they are today. The new generations are facing a world that

is both more complex to understand and more transformative. What Europe’s youth’s fears and aspirations tell us

about the possibilities to shape the future?

PANEL I

Left unattended, mounting inequalities will feed into a four-fold crisis: economic, political, social and ecological at

the same time. The Member States cannot counter the effects on their own, nor can they mount a credible defense

unaccompanied by others. There is a clear need of more effective national and European policies. In recent years

the EU has developed new instruments to measure, complementary to economic performance, the social aspects

of life in the EU and the social impact of EU’s various policies. But is the European Pillar of Social Rights providing

the right framework and tools to achieve more equitable social outcomes?

The high-paced disruptive technological innovations that we see today have tremendous effects on the world of

labour, exposing workers and communities across the globe to unprecedented levels of uncertainty and volatility.

The Welfare State model is coming increasingly under threat. How to pace ourselves through change on the labour

markets and how to ensure that the future of work works for everyone in the society?

Within the lifespan of a generation environmental issues have changed all aspects of human life. From early

attempts at raising environmental awareness to newer efforts to diminish the rate of use of non-renewable natural

resources or to offset the ‘social cost of carbon’, climate change mitigation has gained salience for a number of

issues which go beyond environmental sustainability concerns. More and more voices consider necessary a ‘green

new deal’ as a matter of both ensuring economic development and fighting economic inequality. However, green

parties at the periphery of EU, most notably in Eastern Europe, are not capable to mirror the electoral success their

sister parties enjoy in the West. And the political parties of the Left in these countries are nowhere near bringing to

the core of their political agenda green topics.

Wrap-up Session

Are the current left parties in Europe spent? As shocking as the question may be, their depressing results in the

electoral arena in recent years call for a careful consideration of the underlying causes and connected processes

which make it harder for these parties to re-establish themselves as the incumbent political force for progress and

social justice.
