February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Every teen and everyone who cares about teens needs to know that Hope’s Door is here to help victims of dating abuse, which affects one in five

girls before high school graduation. Those aren’t statistics from some national survey or under-privileged area; those are the numbers right here in Westchester County. But don’t think that the violence is limited to girls. Two Westchester families have lost children recently to dating abuse. One was a 17-year old girl, Elizabeth Butler of North Salem High School who was killed in 2005, but the other was Justin Woodward of Hendrick Hudson High School who was murdered in 2008.

The Hope’s Door answer to dating abuse is the Love Shouldn’t Hurt pro-gram, which includes Students Terminating Abusive Relationships (STAR), a peer leadership component. Our goals are to break the silence about dating abuse, empower young people with the knowledge to distinguish between abuse and healthy relationships, and educate young people with the strategies to help themselves or a peer.

We have empowered more than 97,000 young people with potentially life-saving information about abuse, including 10,130 teens just last year. Moreover, the number of teens reporting that they would tell a parent about abuse grew from 25% to 41%; the number who would tell no one fell from 26% to 16%; and the number who would tell a friend grew from 66% to 84%.

We achieved these outcomes because of widespread support. The West-chester Community Foundation gave us an unprecedented three years of support. Then came the Avon Foundation, Cappelli Foundation, CitiBank, County of Westchester, Eileen Fisher, Elizabeth G. Butler Angel’s Fund, HSBC, Junior League of Northern Westchester, MBIA Foundation, Ron-ald McDonald House Charities, St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Target, TJX Foundation, United Way, Verizon, Verizon Wireless, and hundreds of private donors.

The most heart-breaking words I have heard as Executive Director were uttered by Elizabeth Butler’s mother, Patty Butler, when she said “Anyone who ever said that time heals all wounds never had a child murdered.” If you have any reason to believe that your teen is either the victim of abuse or the perpetrator of abuse, please call the Hope’s Door hotline at 888-438-8700 before it’s too late.

Kelly was fourteen years old when she fell in love. Her boyfriend was very possessive and manipulative, but Kelly thought those were signs of his love. Over the next 12 months, the possessiveness and manipulation escalated into severe sexual and physical abuse. She hid the bite marks and the bruises along with the pain in her heart. One day the heartache became so bad that Kelly asked him to hit her. As she told us: “For one second I didn’t feel the ache in my heart, just the sting on my face.” A few months later, Kelly found the courage to break up with him. She later heard about Hope’s Door and joined our STAR group. She felt that she had to help spread awareness and hopefully save another girl from the pain she had endured. Kelly told us that the STAR program “helped me create a new group of friends, open new doors, and find closure. I can honestly say that I am stronger and wiser than the day I entered the storm.”
