Hope Street
Academy
May 2017
I hope you are all doing well and have had a chance to enjoy the warm spring weather. I know this is a time that students are tempted to lose focus and outside distractions can affect student performance in school. I want to encourage parents to help in ensuring students finish the year strong. Good attendance is vital to student success so please stress this to your student.
Graduation is fast approaching. Hope Street graduates will need to report to Hope Street on Thursday, May 18 at 8:00 AM for rehearsal. It is very important graduates arrive to rehearsal on time so they know what to do. Graduation ceremonies will begin at 10:00 AM on May 18th. Hope Street provides lunch for our guests following the ceremony. Provided the weather is good we will have seating available on the front lawn and in the cafeteria. We look forward to seeing our graduates and all the proud families. It is such a rewarding time for me to watch all our graduates reach their goal.
The last day of school is Thursday May 25th. Graduating seniors who have not completed their necessary coursework should attend school after graduation to finish their classes. For seniors who have completed their coursework they will need to turn in their Chromebooks to the media center by May 25th to avoid any district fees. The last day of school on May 25th is only a half day and no lunches are being served. School will dismiss at 11:39 for Hope Street students.
Summer school will be offered this year at Hope Street Academy for only Hope Street students. The session will run from June 5 through June 30. Class will be held from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM. The fee is $25.00 and when students complete their summer school class the $25.00 is refunded back to the student so essentially summer school is free for students. I want to encourage students and parents to take advantage of this summer school opportunity. It is a great way for students to earn credits towards their diploma. If parents/students are interested simply see myself, Dr. Lyons, or Ms. Seamans and we will provide them an enrollment form with the class they need. Parents can then complete the form and sign and submit the $25.00 to the main office to reserve their summer school spot. Enrollment is on a first come first serve basis so I encourage everyone to get these completed as soon as possible.
I know it is early to start thinking about enrollment for next fall but I want to let parents know that enrollment for 2017-18 school year will be offered online again. Parents will be able to enroll their students through their powerschool portal accounts. For any parents/students who need assistance in this process Hope Street will be open to assist parents July 26th and 27th from 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM and July 28th from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM. I am also attaching information regarding the Districts welcome center for all new students. They are having extended hours on April 27th and May 10th from 5:00 - 7:00 PM to offer assis-tance to interested parents for school registration and multiple Shawnee County partners will be also be available at these times. The Shawnee County Health Department will be offering immunizations for students, assistance will be provided for KanCare enrollment and dental screenings. Please view the attachment for further details.
As always, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to call me at 438-4280.

Teacher of the Month
Ms. Tagle is the Teacher-of-the-Month at Hope Street Acad-emy because she loves her students. Ms. Tagle is a teach-er who strives to make positive changes in the lives of stu-dents. She feels that Hope Street is the best place to be to accomplish this.
She measures success for herself, as a teacher, through the hard work, patience, dedication and success of her students. It continually keeps her motivated.
When Sharon Tagle was younger, becoming a teacher was not what she pictured for herself. She wanted to become a chemist, making new chemicals and selling products. When she first started college, she did not know she want-ed to teach. She started teaching in the Philippians before coming to teach at Highland Park High School for 2 years. Since having the opportunity to work at Hope Street she has never left.
The things she likes about Hope Street Academy is that it’s small, like a family, and you can build relationships with students, and staff.
Ms. Tagle said, “There is no easy way to success but do try your best and you will get there.”

“What are some words of advice for underclassmen?” “Do not mess up your freshman year, I know it
can be tempting because I made the same mistakes. Just buckle down and do what you have to do to be suc-

Ciera Easter is a Senior at Hope Street Academy, and was lucky enough to be chosen to be this month’s Artist of the Month by Ms. Miles. Ciera’s first time creat-ing art was in Elementary school, “I loved it,” she said. Since then, she's always liked art and hopes to incorpo-rate art into her career path and become a tattoo artist. “I think it would be pretty cool to know that someone else other than me likes my artwork,” she said. Ciera’s inspiration is her grandma because she supported her the most and had big dreams for her, and her favorite artist is Van Gogh. Congratulations to our Hope Street Artist of the Month!

Mr. Schwarz and his horticulture classes have taken care of the garden and landscaping of the school. They have made the outside of the school look fantastic. The Hope Street garden has improved much over the years with Mr. Schwarz teaching the class. The students have built raised garden beds, and
a flower garden on the side of the school. They have also mulched and planted flowers in the landscaping of Hope Street. The horticulture class has made the en-trance to the school a much more inviting place with all the fresh flowers in the planting boxes. Students also put in two new trees to replace tress that had been removed. This is a way for Hope Street students to not only contribute to the curb appeal of the school, but also offers a way for students to contribute to nature.
