Only with your help . . .Domestic violence affects our community in many ways. Despite chronic
under-reporting, it accounts for a quarter of all reported violent crime, including murder. It is important that we recognize that survivors andperpetrators of domestic violence are members of our local communities. Assuch, domestic violence affects us all, as friends, family members, neighborsand employers. In 2007 the Retreat is celebrating 20 years of service to our community. In
the past two decades the Retreat has grown to be a full service organization, providing support and services to families affected by domestic violence. The Retreat works to achieve progress in three key areas:• Increasing safe choices for women and children experiencing domestic
violence by working in partnership with families, donors, and other agencieson the local, state and federal level..• Holding individual abusers accountable for their behavior in such a way
that acts as a future deterrent for them, through group counseling and peersupport.• Providing children and young people with the necessary knowledge and
skills required to build relationships based on respect and mutualunderstanding, with shared power and a commitment to non-violence.Each year many more women and children are safer, more perpetrators are
being held accountable and mechanisms are being put in place to prevent thisabhorrent crime. This work cannot be accomplished without the loyal support of our donors.
Working together, we can alleviate the suffering of those affected by domesticviolence and take necessary and important steps to prevent domestic violencein our community.

Working together . . .
Partner AgenciesEvery hour of every day of the
year, someone answers the Retreat’shotline - the lifeline between victimsof family violence and the vitalservices they need. Callers receivecrisis counseling and informationabout the dynamics of domesticviolence, services available at theRetreat, and community resourcesincluding: the medical community, legal advice, police, and socialservices. This crisis line has bothEnglish and Spanish speakers.Hotline counselors link and refer
callers to the appropriate service forneeds such as legal advocacy, formalcounseling, job training, food, transportation, and shelter. Thecoordination of all of these servicesextends beyond the scope of theRetreat. Through collaborative effortwe are able to move families out ofdanger and into a safe environment. Some of the many agencies the
Retreat partners with include theDepartment of Social Services, ChildProtective Services, FamilyCounseling Services, CommunityHousing Innovations, other domesticviolence service providers, and theEast End’s municipalities, schools andpolice departments.
PoliceEvery police department on the
East End works with the Retreat toprovide comprehensive victim
services. For many victims, it is apolice officer that leads their first stepout of an abusive relationship. The Retreat staff provides police
with training in domestic violenceissues and resolution.Working closely with East End
Police Departments has been anintegral part of the Retreat’s servicessince our inception in 1987.The inspiration for the Retreat
came from Mary Bromley, a crisiscounselor for the East HamptonTown Police. She worked with thedepartment, the East HamptonRotary, and the Town of EastHampton to begin a hotline forvictims of domestic abuse. It quicklyexpanded into more services andshelter for families.
Municipal SupportThe Town of East Hampton
originally funded the Retreat’s shelter. Our eighteen-bed shelter operates atcapacity all year, providing criticalservices and a safe place to live for upto six families at a time. While inresidence, clients benefit fromindividual and group counselingsessions, workshops on financialplanning, pre-employment training, communications and parenting skills.

such as attorney services, JusticeCourt, counseling, shelter andaftercare programs. Our advocates areexperienced at identifying and helpingresolve the myriad of problems thatarise for victims of domestic violence. The Retreat also serves on an East
End Committee, along with theFamily Justice Research Center,Suffolk County Task Force on FamilyViolence, and the Family and JusticeCourts. The goal is to help evoke acoordinated and effective responsefrom the judicial system in order tomaximize the safety of domesticviolence victims and their children.
Children & SchoolsEvery year, over three million
children witness and/or are victims ofdomestic violence. Studies show that
men who have witnessed or suffereddomestic abuse as children are morelikely to batter future partners. TheRetreat offers programs to break thiscycle. Our programs include individual
and group counseling for children. Wealso work closely with area schools.Since its inception in 1995, our inschool programs have reached over30,000 students in grades 3-12.Medical Service ProvidersThe Retreat works closely with
medical service providers in theregion, including area EmergencyDepartments. For many, the medicalstaff is the first helping hand and aguide to more services. The generosity of medical service
providers in the region goes beyondreporting abuse and aiding victims.Dr. Gerry Curotola, a local EastHampton dentist, recently providedcomplete cosmetic and functionaldental work on one of our shelterclients who suffered from a brokenjaw which had healed incorrectly dueto a lack of proper medical attention.Dr. Curotola alsorecruited colleagues

Working together for families . . .and personal friends including acosmetologist, dermatologist, hairdresser, and other professionals, togive our client a complete makeover.Another everyday hero for our
clients is Dr. Dempsey and the EastHampton Foundation. They enable usto provide medical support for all ofthe clients of our shelter. Throughtheir generosity, families are able toget back on the road to physical healthas they begin their journey ofindependence from abuse.
CounselorsBeyond the physical scars of
domestic violence are the emotionaland psychological ones; the unseenscars. Domestic violence often causessevere psychological trauma, whichcan continue long after its victimshave found physical safety. TheRetreat offers support in English andSpanish. These services are designedto help women and children addressthe long-term effects of domesticabuse, such as post-traumatic stress, anger and depression.
Communities of FaithMany faith groups offer important
services to those requiring help, anddo much to convey the crucial need to
value one another and not to hurt, abuse or control others. For manysurvivors of domestic violence, faithplays a key role in supporting andguiding them through theirexperiences. The Retreat participates on the
Communities of Faith Task Force, uniting all faiths in their attempts tohelp survivors of domestic violenceand to challenge abusers.
Community OutreachThe Retreat’s staff speaks at
schools, in the workplace, communitygroups and churches addressing themyths surrounding domestic violence. Our message about ending domesticviolence is spread through trainingand workshops, printed materials, speaking engagements, and publicservice announcements. The professional training
component targets those who areinvolved in assisting abuse victims andtheir dependents, such as healthprofessionals, law enforcementagencies, social service organizations, schools, religious groups andcorporations.

It’s not so easy to walk out of a marriage. . .if there are children involved it feels like you’ve failed. The staff at theRetreat helped my see that leavingandlearning to be independent was the only way to succeed.
When hewent to the closetfor his gun, that’s when Iknew I had to get out orhewas going to kill me.
That’s when I finally madea call to theRetreat.

I thought that was howparents got along. I did’t like it,but that was my world. It wasn’t until I met theRetreatteachers at school that I learned it’s not right to hurt
someone else. It’s about respect - respect me, respect you.
It was worse seeingmymother hit than beinghitmyself. The day we left wasthe day I started livingagain. Thank you for
helpingme andmy mom.
