Carpets need to be cleaned and, eventually, wear out; lights need to be replaced, years of leakage from rain takes its toll on buildings, and years of hot sun takes it toll on roofs and caulking. Either funds are collected from the congregation to keep a building in good condition or repairs are put off until they become a haz- ard...and more expensive. There's always the possibility of a church selling its property and renting space, but many of the is- sues remain - it just becomes someone else's issue. It is possible to share a sanctuary with another congregation - and there are chal- lenges there. Sometimes congrega- tions merge, and that is fraught with many more difficulties. And buildings are important to us. My kids grew up at Hope, my daughter was married here and my grand- sons were baptized here. Selling, moving, merging are all possibili- ties but congregations will usually share a pastor before anything else. These are the expenses that are challenging congregations and these expenses are making congre- gations think creatively. Next month, I'll look at offerings and of- fering trends. Today was the absolute worst day ever

And don’t try to convince me that

There’s something good in every day

Because, when you take a closer look,

This world is a pretty evil place.

Even if

Some goodness does shine through once in a while

Satisfaction and happiness don’t last.

And it’s not true that

It’s all in the mind and heart

Because

True happiness can be obtained

Only if one’s surroundings are good

It’s not true that good exists

I’m sure you can agree that

The reality

Creates

My attitude

It’s all beyond my control

And you’ll never in a million years hear me say that

Today was a good day
