PASTORAL CHAT My dear readers, 1. Responding to Reader’s observations In the midst of physical, mental and spiritual fatigue, I am responding to our member’s (Mr Daniel Ding) observations on Dr Hartnett’s speech on Lord’s Day December 1 at Sunset Gospel Hour. Together with Mr Ding’s observations, I am reproducing Dr Carl Wieland’s statement on the same matter. It is important to have the matter of doctrine thrashed out, and re-state our Church’s stand on the absolute truth and trustworthiness of the Bible record, which we all hold dear without a shadow of doubt or ambiguity. Below I reprint (a) Dr Wieland’s reply to my enquiry, and (b) Mr Ding’s letter. a. Dr Carl Wieland’s response Clarification on the age of the world issue At your request, in order to clarify -- and for the record -- I would like to state that anyone who is accredited to speak for CMI must believe, hold and teach what CMI does, namely that the entire universe was created in six earth-rotation days several thousand years ago, i.e. nothing is millions of years old. That includes Dr John Hartnett who speaks for us from time to time. To my knowledge, all at CMI (and I know Dr Hartnett does for certain) hold that, based on the Bible’s information, this beginning date for all things was close to 6,000 years ago. PS: For your interest, I have extracted the relevant bit from my last email about John, highlighted in bold. I suspect most would have understood this, though I'm sorry it was buried in a lot of words. He most definitely believes that creation of the entire universe was 6,000 years ago and in fact he stated this in his talk, but it might have been easy to miss. I assure you that recent creation is one of the important points in our Statement of Faith, and no-one would be permitted to speak at one of our seminars (as John was) nor recommended to speak at a church (as I recommended John to you) unless they believed in that and NOT in the ‘millions of years’.

b. Letter from Mr Daniel Ding Dear Pastor Tow and Pastor Quek, Warm greetings in the name of our Lord. I read with deep concern and mixed feelings of vulnerability upon the prompt evaluation of Dr John Hartnett’s SGH message dated 1st December 2013, in which Pastor Quek has rightly pointed out the grave errors committed in the delivery whether conscious or otherwise. As the revelation unfolded, I was struck dumbfounded and shaken between the Theological Controversies of believing that the human race, the earth and the universe with all the stars, constellations and galaxies that was created some 6,000 years ago which I still strongly hold is undermined and contradicted by the Scientific Theory of Cosmology that time in Space is much faster than time on Earth, a suggested notion that is unscriptural. Didn’t the Bible tell us clearly that God created human beings and the earth together with the universe and all the stars, constellations and galaxies within the 6 days, and if so then why would any true Bible-believing preacher or Christian give fellow believers the wrong understanding or implication that the Universe was created very much earlier or in their terminology before the world began puzzling-light years ago? Although it is good that some Scientific Theories supported the Biblical Truth that all true Bible-believing fundamentalists subscribe to, but nonetheless it is deemed unnecessary or redundant because Bible is after all the exact words of God written by appointed men through divine inspiration. It is the truth, it is absolute, it is the supreme and sovereign Word of God that is infallible and unchanging and it certainly does not require any proving or verification by imperfect sinful men. For this reason and more, it is perhaps not wise or appropriate to adopt Scientific Theories that supported the Biblical Truth and reject those that do not, because doing so would subject God’s words to men’s fanciful, bias and unreliable verification based solely on men’s theory. God’s Word is true simply because God said so. There is no need for proving or verification about what God says because He has decreed and ordained it according to His good pleasure and sovereign will even before the foundation of the world. Sincerely yours, Daniel Ding Yours faithfully in the Saviour’s Service,

Dr SH Tow
