What is EDS?
Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a group of connective tissue gene disorders that produce complex problems across multiple systems of the body. There are no cures. Connective tissue is the glue that holds the body together and gives structure. Glue in EDS is like old dried up Elmer’s Glue, while the glue in a healthy person is like Gorilla Super Glue.
Why the Zebra? Medical students are taught to think horses (common illnesses), not zebras (rare illnesses), when they hear hoofbeats (symptoms). This causes rare diseases to be frequently undiagnosed or misdiagnosed because physicians are looking for the most common cause of symptoms. Further pain and disability occur during the years it takes for an accurate diagnosis. The peculiar thing is that EDS is likely not rare, but rarely diagnosed.
