Awards given in First World War and Third Afghan War ( 1914-1919)1
After First World War, State ruler was given honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel of 18 Th RoyalGarhwal Rifles. In 1928, 2/Lt. Nathu Singh was given O. B. I. –First Class (Sardar bahadur) forcontributions to recruitment efforts and expeditions against tribal on frontier.
1 This list does not include the name of Maharani Nepoliya Rajya Laxmi‘s Kaiser I Hind Medal for contributionto war efforts as she was not member of this military formation. Same is the reason for exclusion of awards toDewan Bhawani Dutt Uniyal and Major Karam Singh for their contribution to war efforts. It also does notinclude award of O. B. I. – Ist Class to Lt. Col. Sunder Singh Bahadur after the afghan war as the status of theaward is not clear after 1930. Whether it was withdrawn by British government is not clear till today.
The casualties of First World War are available in this table.
Reason of Casualty Indian officer Other Ranks TotalKilled in Action 1 9 10Died of Wounds 0 5 05Died of Disease 0 12 12Wounded2 2 20 22Missing 0 1 01Total 3 47 50
Out of these figures, 7 killed and thirty wounded were result of operations in France and Flanders. They were covered with glory in battlefield as well as outside. The soldiers coming from deficientregions of Tehri were able to make themselves home in the destroyed countryside of France andFlanders. They survived on the recipes prepared from poppy and even taught the same to locals. KutAl Amara was a disaster for Indian army units. But there also, bravery of this company wasappreciated.
