As my Capital High newspaper teacher, Ms. Leaphart greatly influenced my life. In my two years working on the newspaper, she improved my writing by teaching me how to write objectively and concisely. She empowers her students by allowing them to choose their own articles and layout of the newspaper. In her class, she fostered my creativity and encouraged me to be myself. She alsohelped me grow as a leader, allowing me to be the President/King ofthe newspaper, and under her guidance I learned the responsibilities of leadership. Thank you Ms. Leaphart for letting me be me.

Mr. Wolf is one of the most creative and memorable people whom I have ever met. When I think back to kindergarten it is almost like I am actually there, having a blast. Not only was Mr. Wolf able to come up with activities to help with academics such as a wedding forthe letters “q” and “u,” but he has an uncanny ability to make each student feel unique and special. Anyone who has met Mr. Wolf can attest to this. Kindergarten needs to be about getting a great start, and Mr. Wolf certainly provided that. Thank You Mr. Wolf!

The first class I took with Mr. Garza was not even by choice; it was the only open class that period. Looking back, I wouldn’t have traded it. Since then, I’ve taken more of his classes and been involved with three years of HOSA with him as an advisor. His passion and knowledge for healthcare and the human body have given me vast amounts of classroom information, vital life skills, and introduced me to and passed on his passion for my intended career in the medical field.

Since my first day of high school and through my sophomore year, Mrs. Wardell taught me so much, from the replication of a single cell, to the many things that I could do with a career in science. She sparkedmy interest in the medical field, and since the first day of her class, my interest has only grown. Mrs. Wardell helped me find a passion for learning and what I wanted to do with my life, and I thank her so much for it.

Robert Holter is a role model and a call to excellence. He never expects more than you can give, but he always pushes you to give what you can, even if you don’t yet realize that you have that potential. The most important thing about Mr. Holter is his character. He is kind to all, accepting everyone for who they are when others will not. He understands that sometimes people need a rest and never begrudges you an off-day. He is an inspiration, instilling aspirations, and a friend when in need.

Every day, Mr. Proctor creates a class that isn’t just an hour of my school day, but an integral, transformative part of my life. It is incredible the reach he has—from challenging his students to give up an addictive habit, to daring us to walk to Missoula with a shopping cart, to forcing us to identify our own hamartia. Mr. Proctor makes the characters we read—Stephen, Meursault,Kurtz—come alive, if only in our fleeting collective imagination. Thank you, Mr. Proctor, for teaching me literature and life.

Leslie Donahue was a constant, driving force throughout the first nine years of my education. When I was in first grade, she advocated for my early enrollment into Clancy’s individualized learning program,B.I.O.S. Throughout the program, Ms. Donahue pushed me to exceedexpectations, fostered my creativity, and encouraged me to think analytically. Between art, social studies, Cougar Power, and B.I.O.S.,she created fun and challenging environments where my mind wasconstantly broadened. I never sat in my dad’s classroom, or in his office, but I sat at our dinner table, which is where many of my lessons were learned. The three most significant being— think of others before yourself, never give anything less than your best, and always follow your passion and dreams. I witnessed him sharing those same lessons with his students at Capital High School. He approaches every situation with a calm and positive mindset, always saying, “The common goal is to move forward, never backwards.” Dad, thank you for being a Distinguished Educator in my life. The ability to teach someone is commendable, but to inspire someoneis a rare gift. Having Mrs. Dorrance as an English and Creative Writingteacher, I’ve been fortunate enough to learn from someone who embodies both as one. Her emphasis on creativity, individuality, andconfidence, inspired me to strive as a student and bloom as a person. From discussions of The Great Gatsby to the documentary, Life In a Day,her lessons went far beyond the classroom. Entering middle school can be an intimidating experience. I met Ms. McMahon when she became my 6th grade math teacher. Not only did she make the transition an easy one, she taught me some lifelessons. She showed me how hard work in the classroom would providean easier path in high school. She taught respect and responsibility. She was a part of the WEB program, “where everybody belongs,” and recruited me to share that ideal. She was my track coach and introduced me to the hurdles, an event I will letter in all four years in high school. Thank you, Ms. McMahon, for your mentoring in theclassroom and on the track.

Among the prestigious few, Mrs. Nancy Peterson stands strong as one of the greatest educators I have had the pleasure of knowing. A teacher can stick to a single subject, but Mrs. P teaches the timeless principles of compassion and reliability in order to help her students reach the highest levels of achievement. It was Machiavelli who said, “It’s not titles that honor men, but rathermen who honor titles.” In my 2 years in Room 22 with Mr. Schulte, I understand that he does honor the title of Distinguished Educator.Granted, for a good third of that time I was somewhat terrified in hisclass, but it didn’t take long to recognize Mr. Schulte as a devoted educator and generally a good guy. Mr. Schulte commands the classroom with a certain level of respect that leaves students eager to learn and match the same degree of charisma he supplies on a daily basis. The passing of a dear friend my junior year was a difficult lesson for me to understand. I can proudly say that Mr. Murgel saved my life. He opened my eyes to the things that matter and, most importantly, cared for me as an individual. “You’ll be alright kiddo,” repeats in my mind in the difficult times that I’ve learned to fight through becauseof this man.

Many qualities make for a great teacher and while I have had severalterrific teachers in the past twelve years, I would like to tell you why you stand out so much to me. Aside from the fun and laughs we had,you valued me for my uniqueness and strengths. You always made time for little conversations, a friendly smile, or a brief compliment. You expected my best work and you always believed in and encouragedme. I appreciate you, Mr. Weller. Thank you!

Psychology is the study of humans and their behavior. As my AP Psychology teacher, Ms. Klein perfectly taught me the most human and real of behaviors: kindness and love. Ms. Klein told us once that we should feel safe to open up in her class, and that was easy becauseher gift as an educator is to create a classroom that feels like home. I looked forward to her warm smile and to her unfailing optimism inone of the most stressful times in my education. Thank you, Ms. Klein.

Although I didn’t have Mr. Hollow as a teacher, I was lucky enough to have him as a soccer coach for three years. The way he positively influenced my confidence on and off the field was amazing. He alsocoached me to have a strong work ethic and to be persistent in what I do. I truly believe that those life lessons transferred over to my school life and that he is a big part of why I earned this award. Thank you Mr. Hollow!

You know you’ve got a teacher magnifique when, after two years of unenthused plodding away at French, you suddenly begin translatingeverything you hear in your head and looking for ways to insert the language into conversation. Madame Bartels brought new light to theromance of French and new light to my daily schedule. She is incrediblykind, caring, and positive, and always makes me laugh when I stop in atlunch to say hi. Merci beaucoup Madame, vous êtes vraiment merveilleuse!

If you see a blonde guy wearing a purple cape and bow tie while buzzing on a trumpet mouthpiece in the hallways of Capital High, it’s Mr. Zehr. From his collection of wizard knickknacks, to his abundance of hilarious stories, Mr. Zehr makes band the best class ofthe day. He not only teaches his students the ways to grow musically, but he teaches us the importance of being who we are and having good character. Because he creates an amusing and creative learningatmosphere, he has inspired me to go into music education. Thank you for everything Mr. Zehr.

Señor Lyng, un profesor muy importante en mi vida, me ha enseñado sobre el idioma y la cultura española. Mr. Lyng, a very important teacherin my life, has taught me about the Spanish language and culture. His lively and charismatic personality creates an entertaining learningenvironment for his students. Señor genuinely cares about each of usand it is evident that he wants us to succeed in his class as well as in allof our endeavors. Small acts, such as making tea for a sick student orrecognizing everyone’s birthdays with a gift and Spanish rendition of “Happy Birthday” make us all feel welcome in his classroom. Spending the last two years in his class has inspired me to continue my Spanish education in college. Gracías por todo, Señor!

From the classroom to Yellowstone, Mr. Pedersen, or T-Ped as everyone calls him, is always teaching. His passion for learning is almost as high as the waist of his pants. Although his teaching methodsare unorthodox, he has pushed me to think deeply and form my ownopinions based on facts. “T-Ped” wants all of his students not only tolearn, but to “live deeply and suck the marrow out of life.” His ability to connect with me on a personal level has made me an all-around better student.

Whenever I walked into Mr. Franzen’s English class I was immediatelymet with a warm and energetic greeting. His passion allowed for an extremely positive environment where he taught us how to think and write critically, while simultaneously giving us creative outlets. He continued to challenge us outside of class when he created a book club. I have treasured and utilized all Mr. Franzen did to challengeme inside and out of the classroom. Thank you, Mr. Franzen, for yourdedication and enthusiasm.

Mrs. Sampson is one of those teachers whom I tell younger classmenthey must have. No matter what. Make sure you have Mrs. Sampson for a teacher. You won’t find many teachers who will sit down and talk with you on a personal level. She will listen to you, advise you, and encourage you. There is a fire in her that draws in everyone, and it makes her a great teacher. Thank you Mrs. Sampson. I am so blessedto have you as a teacher and a friend.
