In August 2010, with my exam certificate in my hand, I approached the counter of Cardiff Sixth Form College at the education fair in Hong Kong.

It was my first time meeting its Executive Director, Mrs Sarwar, but the short conversation I had with her left me with a strong desire to come to this college. One month later, I left my hometown to start my A-level course at Cardiff Sixth Form College. I found things quite challenging at the beginning of the year because of the new environment and the demanding workload. However, the college didn’t leave me hanging. Students are given regular progress meeting with the Vice Principal, Mrs Thompson, and the staff and teachers are more than willing to listen to our problems and help us deal with them. During the holidays, it’s even common for the teachers to give up their holiday plans in order to help us prepare for the exams. This close relationship between the teachers and students is what makes this college unique, and is one of the reasons why I really relish studying here.

Like most young people, I was initially unsure about my future career. To help us with this the college holds regular UCAS session to discuss our career choices, and this, coupled with the opportunity to gain an insight through relevant work experience, has definitely cemented my dream to study Medicine. Of all the work experience that the college organised, the Goodwill Ambassador Programme was the one I benefitted from the most as I was able to shadow

doctors in a Malaysian Hospital. It was also a great opportunity to explore the culture of a different country and experience the stunning beauty of Malaysia; a sentiment I believe all the students who went would agree upon.

Apart from the work experience, I was also involved in representing the college in competitions. Coming from a school in Hong Kong I didn’t get much chance to participate in competitions because of the great number of students in my class. This college is different. The competitions have turned me from a shy, quiet boy to an out-going, confident student. My role as International Head Boy has taught me responsibility and I would really like to thank the college for giving me this opportunity. Studying in this college has also provided me the chance to meet a wide range of students from all over the world, including Malaysia, Europe, Iran, and Botswana. Learning in the same classroom as them is an enjoyable experience, and I have found out a lot about their cultures and customs.

Cardiff Sixth Form College is like a family, with friendly, dedicated teachers and hard-working students. It has been a great experience to be part of this family and I sincerely recommend every prospective student join our family. It’s a place where dreams come true.

I have wanted to study abroad since I was young. After joining Cardiff Sixth Form College, I settled in well and in a short period of time Cardiff felt like home, thanks entirely to the college staff and the former A2 students. Through studying and living in the heart of Cardiff, the Capital of Wales, I’ve learnt to be more independent; a skill which I believe will help me smoothly adapt to university life.

The work ethos of the college makes it stand out from its competitors. With regular UCAS sessions and interview workshops, we are given first-hand information on the university application process, and step-by-step guidance towards gaining a university place. Everyone here is proactive, and know what they need to do in order to achieve their goals; with each and every person willing to put in every effort. The teachers at CSFC are superb. In a small class size environment, we are encouraged to actively take part in class. I have not only learnt the exam syllabus and techniques, but the learning atmosphere has ignited my passion for acquiring new knowledge.

The work experience the college provides is excellent. Throughout my AS year, I have shadowed healthcare professionals in many different settings – from clinics to hospitals. These

experiences are truly inspiring. Together with the Healthcare Diploma organised by the college, I have reaffirmed my career choice.

Cardiff Sixth Form College provides me with the greatest support, to help me reach my full potential. I have had the opportunity to take part in various extra-curricular activities, including the European Youth Parliament, Model United Nations and Young Enterprise. Through these I have had numerous opportunities to enrich my life and broaden my horizons. These 2 years of college life have been very exciting and fruitful. I would recommend Cardiff Sixth Form College without hesitation!

I first met the college representatives, Mr. and Mrs. Sarwar, at a Hong Kong Education Fair. The teaching style and the college’s history of excellent results attracted me to continue my A level studies at this college.

After my HKCEE examination, my parents and I decided to join the A-level program at CSFC in September 2010. This college can be described as an inspiring door in my life. I enjoy the learning environment and the close relationship amongst the teachers, staff and students; all of whom are very friendly and dedicated to education. With the help and encouragement of the teachers, I was able to achieve good GCSE and AS grades in the AS year. Their great devotion has enabled me to adapt to the new school life in a short period of time.

We are given extra help from the teachers and staff, for example our weekly progress meetings with our Vice Principal, Mrs. Thompson, during which students can discuss the academic and personal problems that they may face. As an international student, I feel the pastoral care and support from the college helped me to quickly adjust to school life here. In addition, we are given extra support from teachers, many of whom have sacrificed countless holidays to solve our academic questions. For university applications, the college has provided extra support and advice ranging from the choice

of university courses to personal statement help. The weekly Healthcare Diploma Program has also given me new knowledge that has been incredibly useful during my university interviews.

Apart from academic study, the college also arranges a weekly shuttle bus for us to David Lloyd’s Sport Centre as an alternative way to relax and release stress. Equipped with facilities such as a pool, a gym and courts for several racquet sports, this gives us the opportunity to maintain an active, healthy lifestyle and also strengthens the bonds between classmates and encourages teamwork. This teamwork was also demonstrated at the Duke of Edinburgh expedition in October 2011 which was a fantastic and truly memorable experience that built cooperation between us during the last year in this college.

I still remember Mrs. Sarwar quoting American Businesswoman Helen Gurley Brown - “The only thing that separates successful people from the ones who aren’t is the willingness to work very, very hard”. Throughout these two years, this sentence has proven true, I have achieved my goals and headed to university life, but I will always keep that golden phrase close to my heart. Thank you Cardiff Sixth Form College!

I was supported step by step through the application process, given extensive interview preparation and tailored advice on making my personal statement stand out. CSFC makes sure that students achieve the very best grades they can, and push us to work hard. This hard work pays off - I myself received an award from the examining board for achieving the top A Level Maths results in the country, with a maximum 600 out of 600 points! I couldn’t have achieved this without CSFC’s support.

Coming to CSFC was the best decision I could’ve made for my future career. Not only is the teaching standard excellent, but the university application support has proved invaluable in securing me a place at my first choice university.

During my time at Cardiff Sixth Form College I have been driven hard and enjoyed every moment of the experience!

With the full support of the teachers and staff, I managed to obtain 8 A*, an A, and a B for GCSE and an A in AS LAW in one year! Aside from our academic studies, there are a variety of diverting activities provided for the students such as trips and events, including the Cultural Evening and taster courses at universities.

There has been a significant growth in the college in the last year, but although the number of students increased, the focus on each and every student still remains strong. The teachers are thoroughly dedicated to teaching, and we are encouraged to ask questions whenever we have problems. We even have tutorial classes specially designed for us when we have difficulties. There’s not a time that you could not find help as everyone in the college is very supportive, with students even forming study groups to help each other. It is not unusual to find several students studying at the college late into the evening or on weekends.

I was one of leaders in the Cultural Event 2011-2012 and I am proud to say that it was a great success! This event helped in bringing everyone even closer together, and we developed a strong bond through organizing the event. Every

student involved worked very hard, and we had great support from the staff and teachers. From fundraising to the final performances, the event gave us a good opportunity to learn about the importance of teamwork and responsibility. My social skills have also improved as I have met lots of people from different backgrounds to my own.

I greatly appreciate the work placement opportunities that I was given as they helped to reaffirm my career choice in Medicine. The college also organises UCAS sessions, which are regular workshops which give us information on the university application process, and make sure we are on the right track.

If you are determined and hardworking, Cardiff Sixth Form College would be an ideal place for you. The excellent support you will find here and the opportunity of being surrounded by other intelligent young people, who share your ambitions, will inspire you to reach your dreams.

Studying at CSFC constitutes a particularly crucial part in my life. It has enabled me to proceed to be an undergraduate by cultivating my independence, responsibility and diligence.

I am really grateful and appreciative for the selfless contribution from all CSFC staff and the unending commitment given by the college during these two years of study. At the start of my A Levels I was struggling to choose the course I’d like to pursue at university. The college provided me with excellent support in this through weekly progress meeting with the Vice Principal, whom I could ask for opinions and resolution on daily issues. The career guidance group and UCAS sessions organized by Mrs Sarwar also helped with putting my concerns to rest.

The school arranges regular trip and events, such as zoo visits and tours to sights of cultural interest, such as Stratford Upon Avon – birthplace of William Shakespeare. These trips are not only fascinating; they also help international students with their English by further integrating it into their daily life. The social network between the students has recently been linked up by an unofficial online group built up by the students themselves, through which important and emergency messages from the college could be spread out easily. This has also shown how tight the relationship between the students and the college is. With the amount of care and effort the college has shown us, I believe any student would feel part of something very special at CSFC and I feel extremely proud to be a member of its family.

Studying in the UK has been such a great pleasure, and joining Cardiff Sixth Form College is certainly the highlight of my experience abroad. Six months is not a long time, but it was sufficient for me to fall in love with this city, the people and my life here.

Cardiff is a young and vivacious place. CSFC is located in the heart of Cardiff, with only a five minute walk to city centre where you can find everything you need. As a boarder, I found this very convenient.

The college might not be huge in terms of the number of students, but this allows the teachers to have more time and focus on individual students. We get a huge amount of assistance from teachers and staff on all problems we might face; no matter if it’s academic or personal. As an international student, the unfamiliar environment did worry me a bit before I started school here. However, the small community allows the whole year group to quickly mix together. I have made friends with students from all around the world; one of my most precious experiences.

There is no doubt as to the academic excellence of CSFC; previous years’ results and awards have demonstrated this. After I joined the college, I found that the recipe for success is simple - be determined and work hard! As I chose to do five subjects, my schedule is quite tight, especially when exams are approaching. However, the huge amount of preparation, such as past and

mock papers, built up my confidence and I felt no pressure during exam time.

To prepare us for university, the college does not only ensure we obtain the top grades, but moulds us into fully rounded candidates through excellent work experience opportunities. I have had the opportunity to undertake work experience in the Crown Court and a solicitors’ firm, which has enabled me to gain insight of my chosen career.

I have never felt so determined to achieve my goals and so confident in my future. I have had valuable and eye opening experiences and wish to share it with more people! I sincerely recommend CSFC to all students who have passion and are willing to work hard for their future and their dreams.
