Q U E S T I O N S A N D A N W E R S After instal l ing FlyTampa-HongKong, FS sti l l loads the default VHHX Airport.

Please add FlyTampa-HongKong to your scenery database by c l ick ing <SETTINGS> <SCENERY LIBRARY>. There cl ick the <ADD AREA> button and choose the folder /Addon Scenery/FlyTampa-HongKong . FS2004 Note: You need to restar t FS2004 for the changes to take ef fect .

Kai-Tak is deserted of Aircraft.

Simplest solut ion: Enable the Stat ic Aircraft Option dur ing instal lat ion. This wi l l f i l l the airport wi th Air l iners speci f ical ly designed for Kai-Tak.

AI Traff ic for Kai-Tak.

Kai-Tak has been c losed s ince 1998 and is therefore not included in the f l ight schedules of the defaul t Fl ight Simulator as wel l as modern AI packages such as Ult imate-Traff ic , MyTraf f ic , World-of-AI etc. There are however several s imple solut ions to get AI traff ic to the airport , p lease see the sect ion AI Traf f ic for Kai-Tak.

Checkerboard is too small & IGS approach path & l ights are misplaced.

We highly recommended the fol lowing v ideo for real VS. v i r tual compar isons. The checkerboard i tsel f , the hi l l i t was mounted on, as wel l as the approach l ight ing have been careful ly designed and posi t ioned. The expectat ion to see a much larger checkerboard is l ikely re lated to th is element having been oversized in several Kai-Tak sceneries s ince the FS 2000 era.

Q U E S T I O N S A N D A N W E R S Trees have rendering problems in FS2004.

Autogen trees can cause a temporary graphics gl i tch as they fade- in. I f you see a permanent halo or corona type effect around trees, make sure to use defaul t FS2004 trees or convert your tree textures to DXT1 format. Fi les: FS9/texture/t reesSU.bmp, t reesSP.bmp, treesFA.bmp, treesWI.bmp, t reesHW.bmp.

Some AI aircraft don’t land on the runway centerl ine.

Each AI aircraf t f l ies the IGS approach di f ferent ly according to the Fl ight Dynamics in i ts ’ a ircraf t .cfg f i le. This was also the case at the real Kai-Tak wi th var ious air l iners using s l ight ly d i f ferent procedures. Some AI models wi l l have di f f icul ty a l igning to the runway in t ime and land on a t i l ted angle etc. This varying behavior makes AI landings at Kai-Tak very interest ing to watch.

Jetways won’t move in FSX.

Airport tarmac/ground appears grey at night in FSX.

I f you use FSX’s DirectX-10 Preview mode you must instal l the scenery in SDK-Compliance Mode.

IGS approach l ighting is too dim.

I f you wish to intensi fy the approach l ights, s imply create one or more dupl icates (copy & paste) of the f i le _kt_appr13_l ights.BGL with in the fo lder: /Addon Scenery/FlyTampa-HongKong/scenery/

Runway and PAPI l ights are too small & dim in FSX.

Instal l the scenery in SDK-Compl iance Mode for br ighter runway l ight ing.

Can’t obtain clearance when holding at the runway entrances.

The hold-marking in this scenery have been placed at their real-world posi t ions, which are too far from the runway for the FS engine to handle. The solut ion is to taxi c loser to the runway unt i l c learance can be obtained.

Q U E S T I O N S A N D A N W E R S AI-Traff ic jams.

When runway 31 is used AI t raf f ic congest ions can easi ly occur. This is a natural l imi tat ion of Kai-Tak’s taxiway layout that the AI engine cannot overcome. Fortunately, runway 31 is used very rarely i f you rely on real wor ld weather.

AI-Ships don’t show or move.

For AI-Ships to work you must enable GA-Traff ic wi th in FS Sett ings. AI-Ships wi l l begin moving immediately i f you set the t ime within the f i rst 14 minutes of every hour, or between 30 to 44 minutes. Note that not al l ships wi th in this scenery move.

When are Fireworks displayed?

Firework displays are scheduled for the f i rst 10 minutes of every hour star t ing at 8 PM unti l 12 PM.

1. Simplest solut ion for FSX: Download and instal l Kai Tak (VHHX) AI Flight Plans by Jim Vile. It provides pre-compiled Traffic using FSX’s default aircraft as well as Flightplan samples for use with 3rd party AI aircraft. Note that default FSX aircraft used as AI will have a drastic impact on performance. http: / / l ibrary.avsim.net/esearch.php?DLID=117038

A I T R A F F I C F O R K A I - T A K Custom or generic Traff ic

2. Redirect ing your exist ing Traff ic f rom Hong Kong’s new airport (VHHH) to Kai-Tak. To perform the redirect ion of traf f ic from VHHH to VHHX you must f i rst decompile your main Traf f ic BGL f i le (FS/scenery/wor ld/scenery/) . Two of the three resul t ing TXT f i les must be edi ted as fo l lows: In Airports*** . txt insert l ine VHHX,N22* 19.01' ,E114* 12.11' ,0. Optional ly remove the exist ing l ine containing the VHHH entry. Save the f i le. In Fl ightplans***. txt use the Search & Replace funct ion to replace al l VHHH instances wi th VHHX. Save the f i le and recompi le your Traf f ic BGL. 3. VHHX Kai Tak by Kevin Schlünkes provides Flightplans based on 1998 schedules. This requires that you have AI models from AI Aardvark, Evolve AI, etc. as well as proper repaints and knowledge about editing and compiling Traffic. ht tp: / / l ibrary.avsim.net/esearch.php?DLID=97661

Whichever opt ion you choose, keep in mind that creating addit ional schedules for Kai-Tak without redirect ing or disabl ing the exist ing Chep Lak Kok traff ic wi l l result in increased traff ic not only in the Hong Kong area but also at other airports around the world.

F S X M O D E S The FSX version of Kai-Tak can operate in two different Modes: SDK-Compliant Mode & Non-SDK Mode. The mode is set during installation and can be changed anytime by running the Kai-Tak installation program again. The Non-SDK Mode uses custom ground textures to provide detailed airport pavement, centerlines, markings, stains, skidmarks etc. These items cannot be created using the FSX-SDK and have to rely on FSX’s backwards-compatibility to the FS 2002 SDK. This Non-SDK Mode is not compatible with FSX’s DirectX-10 Preview and will result in much slower performance depending on your Graphics Card 3D settings. Specifically, you should run the Non-SDK Mode with AA set to Multisampling 4X or 8X. If you use Supersampling or Combined AA modes FSX performance will decrease dramatically when the airport is in view. See the FSX Recommended Settings section. The SDK-Compliance Mode uses FSX’s own runway, aprons and taxiway features and is therefore fully FSX-SP2 compliant. This Mode can perform over twice the frames-per-second compared to the Non-SDK mode and features brighter runway lighting. If you run FSX’s DirectX-10 Preview you must select the SDK-Compliance Option for the scenery to display properly at night. If you won’t be flying into Kai-Tak itself but wish to use Hong Kong as a city scenery, you should also install this mode.

Note the Mode selection only affects the airport ground textures. Al l 3D objects and other features of the Scenery are ful ly FSX-SP2 Compliant in ei ther mode.

F S X P E R F O R M A N C E Hong Kong performance varies a lot depending on the options you select during installation as well as your Graphics Card’s Settings. The scenery can run as slow as 10 fps with all options checked, while on the same computer it may be setup to run at 30 fps without loosing any of the 3D buildings. As reference, performance at Hong Kong should be higher or at least similar to FSX’s default large airports such as KSFO , KSEA, EGLL, EDDF, etc., given the same settings are used. Some of the most performance demanding features have been disabled by default during installation. Namely: Static Aircraft, Animated AI-Ships and Autogen Trees. Additional options that can be unchecked to increase performance are: Animated Vehicles and Fireworks FX. Note that you can run the installation program as often as needed while changing the Install Options to achieve best results. F S X R E C O M M E N D E D S E T T I N G S Sliders should be within the green marked areas. Red will result in either poor graphics quality or poor performance. It is recommended you use your Graphics Card’s Anti-Aliasing setting instead of FSX’s in-game Anti-Aliasing, with a setting of Multisampling 4X or 8X. Ground Scenery Shadows is recommended OFF because FSX-SP2 introduces many rendering problems not only in Addon Scenery, but in default Scenery as well when this option is enabled.

If you install Kai-Tak in Non-SDK mode (with custom ground polygons), it is essential that you set Nvidia’s Anit-Aliasing to Multisampling using either the Nvidia Control Panel or nHancer.

FS2004: Parts of the ci ty bui ldings disappear when Autogen is set to OFF (sl ider to the left) . FS2004: Scenery objects are not visible when using Top-down view along with certain Camera Zoom factors. FSX: Non-SDK Mode is not compatible with DirectX-10 Preview. You must instal l the scenery in SDK-Compliance mode i f you use DirectX-10 Preview. FSX: Airport pavement is completely dark at night in SDK-Compliance mode. FS2004 & FSX: Because taxiways at Kai-Tak are very t ight, large AI aircraft may have their front wheel in the grass deepening on which runway exit is used.
