Giuseppe Verdi's
Otello
One of Verdi's most famous masterpieces has come back with a whole new production by Tony Award-winning director
Bartlett Sher.
Based on Shakespeare's tragic drama of jealousy and deceit, Verdi composed a masterpiece that examines the force and
the frailty of love and the evil that can prey on human weakness. In this new production, Aleksandrs Antonenko sings the
title role. Despite of his glory on battlefield, Otello is manipulated by his own ensign Iago into suspecting his saintly wife's
faithfulness. He is driven by jealousy, the flaw in his character and ultimately led to his own downfall.
Alongside Aleksandrs Antonenko is the fast-rising soprano Sonya Yoncheva. This is the first time she sings the role of
Desdemona and she delivers a luminous performance that won rave reviews. Zeljko Lucic sings the villainous Iago, who is a
master manipulator out for vengeance. He steals the show by his chilling and convincing interpretation of the villain.
Yannick Nezet-Seguin conducts Verdi's beautiful score and gives a miraculous performance. Acclaimed scenic designer Es
Devlin created, in her Met deput, a "glass palace" to trap the doomed hero. Costume is designed by six-time Tony Award
winner Catherine Zuber while the lighting is designed by two-time Tony winner Donald Holder.
Come to the local cinemas to watch the Met's new production of Verdi's passionate and masterful rendering of one of
Shakespeare's greatest plays.

Yonghoon Lee as Manrico
"An admirably plausible romantic figure onstage, Lee varied dynamics,
and the softer accents of "Ah si, ben mio" and the final duet with
Azucena suited him well." - David Shengold, Opera News
"winning, passionate and convincingly youthful"
- Michael Tanner, The Spectator

OTELLO An opera by Giuseppe Verdi
Aleksandrs Antonenko as Otello
"His trumpetlike highs are hard, bright, and implacable"
- Justin Davidson, Vulture
"He brings mellow colors and penetrating tone to his singing"
- Anthony Tommasini, New York Times
Sonya Yoncheva as Desdemona
"Her luscious sound has just enough of an earthy tinge
and texture to balance the shimmer of her singing."
- Anthony Tommasini, New York Times
"Yoncheva is fresh, free and rich, dramatic in her
increasingly hard-to-watch standoffs with Otello and
achingly poignant in the long final bedroom scene"
- Anne Midgette, Washington Post
Zeljko Lucic as Iago
"Lucic is superb as Iago, a chilling and malevolent portrait of evil
personified"
- Wilborn Hampton, Huffington Post
"Zeljko Lucic relished the villain's words and often delivered them
in a spine-chilling sotto voce while demonstrating ample power in
big moments."
- George Loomis, Financial Times
