This full reverse costing study has been conducted to provide insight on technology data, manufacturing cost and selling price of the HG1120 MEMS InertialMeasurement Unit supplied by Honeywell International.Inc (website).

The System is a Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) based Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) used in the agriculture, autonomous underwater vehicle,industrial equipment, robotics, survey/mapping, stabilized platforms, transportation, drone, and aircraft.

The HG1120 includes MEMS gyroscopes, accelerometers, and magnetometer.

Honeywell use 3 consumer IMUs MEMS sensors from a leader of the market for their tactical grade IMUs. The components are today mature and integratedin consumer product since two at four years. The ASIC dies and the MEMS dies are today qualified for long time applications. Honeywell guarantees a goodoperation of more than 1,000,000 hours at room temperature. But this choice of consumer IMUs results in medium performance with a bias stability of10°/hr for the gyroscope at room temperature.

We estimate that the device is manufactured and tested by Honeywell.Inc in USA for a volume of 10.000 units per year. So, the production cost and theselling price are calculated for 10.000 units in 2018. And we have calculated the cost for 1M units to estimate the price of this IMU module for a largeproduction if similar module would be integrated in autonomous car for example.

Accurate motion capture sensors are

critical to the successful development of

robots, smart agriculture, autonomous

cars and drones. This requires high

accuracy and reliability, and long mission

life, which are not provided by standard

consumer solutions. Honeywell has thus

developed the HG1120CA50 inertial

sensor to address what it calls ‘the

Internet of Moving Things’ and related

applications.

The HG1120CA50 is a compact 44 mm ×

47 mm × 14 mm module designed to

serve platform control, navigation and

robotics applications. Mixing technologies

developed for military applications and

harsh environments with selected

consumer MEMS sensors, the

HG1120CA50 is a 9-axis inertial

measurement unit (IMU) with ±500°/sec

digital gyroscope sensing, a 16g

accelerometer and a ±16 gauss

magnetometer. It uses a low-cost MEMS

technology based on STMicroelectronics’

device process.

In order to achieve a cost effective and

small module, Honeywell uses five MEMS

components from STMicroelectronics

developed for the smartphone industry.

This design allows Honeywell to exploit

STMicroelectronics’ low-cost portfolio and

thus to optimize manufacturing cost.
