Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)(SH300A/AR)This model is also equipped with an Anti-lockBrake System (ABS) designed to help preventwheel lock up during hard braking on unevenor other poor surfaces while running straight.Although the wheel may not lock up - if youare braking too hard in a turn the scooter canstill lose traction, causing a loss of control.

In certain conditions, on uneven surfaces orloose terrain a scooter with ABS may have alonger stopping distance than a scooterwithout ABS.

The ABS system cannot compensate for roadconditions, errors of judgement, or improperuse of the brakes. It is always theresponsibility of the rider to adopt a suitableroad speed in relation to weather conditions, the road surface, and the traffic levels, whileleaving an ample margin of safety. The ABS system is self-regulating and always active.

• The ABS system may be engaged bysudden upward or downward leveldifferences in the road surface.Make sure you observe the prescriptionsconcerning tyres (page 39). The ABScomputer acts on the basis of thecomparative speeds of the front and rearwheel. The use of non-approved tyres canaffect the speed of the wheels and supplyconfusing information to the ABScomputer.

• The ABS system is not active at low speed(around 10 km/h (6 mph) or slower).

• The ABS system will not work if the batteryis discharged.

ABS Indicator Light (SH300A/AR)

This indicator normally illuminates when theignition switch is set to ON and is extingui-shed when the scooter is ridden at a speed ofmore than 10 km/h (6 mph) .If there is a pro-blem with the ABS system, this light flashesand remains on. When the indicator light isilluminated the ABS system is not operative.

If the ABS indicator i l luminates whiletravelling, stop the scooter in a safe placeand switch off the engine.Return the ignition switch to ON. Theindicator should illuminate and then switchoff after the scooter has been ridden at aspeed of more than 10 km/h (6 mph). If theindicator fails to switch off, this means theABS system is not working, although thenormal braking system will continue to workand supply the normal stopping power. Inthese conditions however the systemshould be checked over by an authorized

Honda dealer as soon as possible. The ABS indicator may illuminate if the rearwheel is driven at high speed for more than30 seconds when the scooter is upright onthe stand. This reaction is perfectly normal.Set the ignition switch to OFF and thenreturn it to ON. The indicator light shouldilluminate and then switch off after thescooter has been ridden at a speed of morethan 30 km/h (19 mph).

InspectionBoth the front and rear brakes are thehydraulic disc types. As the brake pads wear, the brake fluid leveldrops. There are no adjustments to perform, butfluid level and pad wear must be inspectedperiodically. The system must be inspectedfrequently to ensure there are no fluid leaks. If the control lever free travel becomesexcessive, and the brake pads are not wornbeyond the recommended limit (page 104-105), there is probably air in the brakesystem and it must be bled. See yourHonda dealer for this service.

Front Brake Fluid LevelWith the scooter in an upright position, check the fluid level. It should be above theLOWER level mark (1). If the level is at orbelow the LOWER level mark (1), check thebrake pads for wear (page 104-105).

COOLANTCoolant recommendationThe owner must properly maintain thecoolant to prevent freezing, overheating andcorrosion. Use only high quality ethyleneglycol antifreeze containing corrosionprotection inhibitors specificallyrecommended for use in aluminum engines.(SEE ANTIFREEZE CONTAINER LABEL).

Use only low-mineral drinking water ordistilled water as a part of the antifreezesolution. Water that is high in mineralcontent or salt may be harmful to thealuminum engine.

Using coolant with silicate inhibitors maycause premature wear of water pump sealsor blockage of radiator passages.Using tap water may cause engine damage.

The factory provides a 50/50 solution ofantifreeze and distilled water in this scooter. This coolant solution is recommended formost operating temperatures and providesgood corrosion protection. A higherconcentration of antifreeze decreases thecooling system performance and isrecommended only when additionalprotection against freezing is needed. Aconcentration of less than 40/60 (40%antifreeze) will not provide proper corrosionprotection. During freezing temperatures, check the cooling system frequently andadd higher concentrations of antifreeze (upto a maximum of 60% antifreeze) ifrequired.

Petrol containing alcoholIf you decide to use a petrol containingalcohol (gasohol), be sure it’s octane ratingis at least as high as that recommended byHonda. There are two types of “gasohol”: one containing ethanol, and the othercontaining methanol. Do not use petrol thatcontains more than 10% ethanol. Do notuse petrol containing methanol (methyl orwood alcohol) that does not also containcosolvents and corrosion inhibitors formethanol. Never use petrol containing morethan 5% methanol, even if it has cosolventsand corrosion inhibitors.

Fuel system damage or engine performanceproblems resulting from the use of fuels thatcontain alcohol is not covered under thewarranty. Honda cannot endorse the use offuels containing methanol since evidence oftheir suitability is as yet incomplete. Before buying fuel from an unfamil iarstation, try to find out if the fuel containsalcohol. If it does, confirm the type andpercentage of alcohol used. If you noticeany undesirable operating symptoms whileusing a petrol that contains alcohol, or onethat you think contains alcohol, switch to apetrol that you know does not containalcohol.

TUBELESS TYRESTo safely operate your scooter, your tyresmust be the proper type and size, in goodcondition with adequate tread and correctlyinflated for the load you are carrying. Thefollowing pages give more detailedinformation on how and when to check yourair pressure, how to inspect your tyres fordamage and what to do when your tyresneed to be repaired or replaced.

Air pressureKeeping your tyres properly inflatedprovides the best combination of handling, tread life and riding comfort. Generally, underinflated tyres wear unevenly, adverselyaffect handling and are more likely to failfrom being overheated. Overinflated tyres make your scooter ridemore harshly, are more prone to damagefrom road hazards and wear unevenly.

We recommend that you visually check yourtyres before every ride and use a gauge tomeasure air pressure at least once a monthor any time you think the tyres might be low. Tubeless tyres have some self-sealingability if they are punctured. Howeverbecause leakage is often very slow, youshould look closely for punctures whenevera tyre is not fully inflated.

n WARNINGUsing tyres that are excessively worn orimproperly inflated can cause a crash inwhich you can be seriously hurt or killed.

Follow all instructions in this owner’smanual regarding tyre inflation andmaintenance.

40

Always check air pressure when your tyresare “cold” – when the scooter has beenparked for at least three hours. If you checkair pressure when your tyres are “warm” –when the scooter has been ridden for evena few miles – the readings will be higherthan if the tyres were “cold”. This is normal,so do not let air out of the tyres to matchthe recommended cold air pressures givenbelow. If you do, the tyres wil l beunderinflated.

The recommended “cold” tyre pressuresare:

InspectionWhenever you check the tyre pressures, you should also examine the tyre treads andsidewalls for wear, damage, and foreignobjects:

Look for: • Bumps or bulges in the side of the tyre or

the tread. Replace the tyre if you find anybumps or bulges.

• Cuts, splits or cracks in the tyre. Replacethe tyre if you can see fabric or cord.

• Excessive tread wear.

Also, if you hit a pothole or hard object, pullto the side of the road as soon as you safelycan and carefully inspect the tyres fordamage.

42

Tyre repairIf a tyre is punctured or damaged, youshould replace it not repair it. As discussedbelow, a tyre that is repaired, eithertemporarily or permanently will have lowerspeed and performance limits than a newtyre.

A temporary repair, such as an externaltubeless tyre plug may not be safe fornormal speeds and riding conditions. If atemporary or emergency repair is made to atyre, you should ride slowly and cautiouslyto a dealer and have the tyre replaced. Ifpossible you should not carry a passengeror cargo until a new tyre is installed.

Even if a tyre is professionally repaired witha permanent internal patch plug, it will notbe as good as a new tyre. You should not exceed 80 km/h (50 mph)for the first 24 hours, or 130 km/h (80 mph)at any time thereafter. In addition you maynot be able to safely carry as much weightas with a new tyre. Therefore, we stronglyrecommend that you replace a damagedtyre. If you choose to have the tyre repaired,be sure the wheel is balanced before youride.

Engine Oil and FilterEngine oi l qual i ty is the chief factoraffecting engine service life. Change theeng ine o i l as spec i f i ed in themaintenance schedule (page 81).When running in very dusty conditions, oil changes should be performed moref requent l y than spec i f i ed in themaintenance schedule.

Please dispose of used engine oil in amanner tha t i s compat ib le w i th theenvironment. We suggest you take it ina sea led conta ine r to your loca lrecycling center or service station forreclamation. Do not throw in the trash orpour it on the ground or down a drain.

Used engine oil may cause skin cancerif repeatedly left in contact with the skinfor prolonged periods. Although this isunlikely unless you handle used oil on ada i l y bas is , i t i s s t i l l adv isab le to

thoroughly wash your hands with soapand water as soon as possible afterhandling used oil.

Changing the oil filter requires a specialoil filter tool and a torque wrench. If youdo no t have these too ls and thenecessary skill, we recommend that youhave your Honda dealer perform thisservice.

If a torque wrench is not used for thisinstallation, see your Honda dealer as soonas possible to verify proper assembly.

Change the engine oil with the engine atnormal operating temperature and thescooter on its side stand to assurecomplete and rapid draining.

This scooter is equipped with a catalyticconverter. The catalytic converter contains preciousmetals that serve as catalysts, promotingchemical reactions to convert the exhaustgasses without affecting the metals. The catalytic converter acts on HC, CO,and NOx. A replacement unit must be anoriginal Honda part or its equivalent.

The catalytic converter must operate at ahigh temperature for the chemical reactionsto take place. It can set on fire anycombustible materials that come near it.Park your scooter away from high grasses, dry leaves, or other flammables.

A defective catalytic converter contributesto air pollution, and can impair yourengine’s performance. Follow theseguidelines to protect your scooter’scatalytic converter.

• Always use unleaded petrol. Even a smallamount of leaded petrol can contaminatethe catalyst metals, making the catalyticconverter ineffective.

• Keep the engine tuned-up.

• Have your scooter diagnosed andrepaired if it is misfiring, backfiring, stalling or otherwise not running properly.
