    AbouttheCourse:This

    course

    provides

    an

    investigation

    of

    the

    role

    of

    immigration

    and

    migration

    in

    shaping

    New

    York

    City'sidentityinthepastandpresent.Topicswillincludethefactorsthathavedrivenanddrawnpeopletothe

    citysincethe17thcentury;thedifferentwaysthatreligion,race,gender,andethnicityhaveshapedimmigrant

    encounterswiththecity;theformationandsocialorganizationofimmigrantcommunitiesinsuch

    neighborhoodsastheLowerEastSide,Harlem,LittleItaly,Chinatown,Astoria,Flushing,andSt.George;the

    impactofsuccessivewavesofnewcomersonurbancultureandpolitics;andthecontinuingdebatesover

    assimilationandAmericanization.Extensivereadingandwritingassignmentsareenrichedbyvisitstohistoric

    sitesandculturalinstitutions.Theculminatingprojectofthisseminaristhecollaborativeconstructionof

    neighborhoodwebsites,exhibitedatafinalcommonevent.

    Oneoftheparticularfocusesofthecoursewillbethewayinwhichexpressionsofethniccultures

    represented

    by

    foodways

    and

    public

    institutions

    have

    been

    shared

    and

    contested

    within

    the

    city,

    and

    mostspecifically,inStatenIsland(theForgottenBorough).Wewillalsoexamineindepththequestionof

    inclusionandcentralityinourattempttoanswertworelatedquestions:first,whereisthehistoryofStaten

    IslandlocatedinthehistoryofthepeoplingofNewYorkCity,andsecond,howhavetheidentitiesofthe

    islandsresidentsbeenchangedbyhistoricalandespeciallyrecenttrendsinimmigration?

    Underneaththeseissueswillbeaninvestigationofhowweknowwhatweknowaboutethnicityinthe

    peoplingofNewYorkCity,andhowwemayrepresentthatknowledgeinanethical,accurate,andengaging

    way. Thefinalprojectforthecoursewillbeacollaborativerecountingintheformofagraphicnovelofthe

    waysinwhichethnicityhasshapedStatenIslandasacommunity.

    CourseRequirements:All

    students

    are

    required

    to

    attend

    class

    meetings,

    actively

    take

    part

    in

    discussions,

    and

    submit

    all

    written

    workontime;lateworkwillnotbeacceptedwithoutpriorarrangementwiththeprofessor.

    Incompletesforthecoursewillonlybegivenbypriorarrangementandwithproperdocumentation.
