Homicide Cases Research:Case 1:DPP v Duggan [2006] VSC 153 (24 April 2006)

Heard in the Supreme Court of Victoria

This case details the strangling murder of Jacinta Green by her former boyfriend Travis Duggan – after he was already on bail after attempting to strangle his ex-wife, Linda Duggan

Charges brought against the defendant:- Murder- Attempted murder

Ruling:Duggan pleaded guilty to the murder of Jacinta Green and to the attempted murder of Linda Duggan

Sentencing:- For the murder of Jacinta Green, 16 years jail- For the attempted murder of Linda Duggan, 8 years, concurrent as to 2 years,

cumulative as to 6 years- Head sentence of 22 years with a non-parole period of 17 years

Case 2:DPP v Nguyen [2008] VSC 11 (8 February 2008)

Heard in the Supreme Court of Victoria

This case details the murder of two victims chopped and stabbed to death in front of four young children

Charges brought against the defendant:- Two counts of murder- Theft

Ruling: Nguyen pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and one count of theft of a motor vehicle

Sentencing: - 25 years of imprisonment, non-parole term of 20 years

Case 3: DPP v Stevenson [2008] VSC 30 (15 February 2008)

Heard in the Supreme Court of Victoria

This case details the murder of Natalie Coles after the accused had consensual sex with the deceased – then killing Ms Coles with a hammer – then attempting to conceal the crime through a number of fires in the bedroom

Charges brought against the defendant:- One count of murder- Once count of arson

Ruling:The defendant pleaded guilty to one count of murder and one count of arson

Sentencing:- 18 years imprisonment for the murder of Natalie Coles- 4 years imprisonment for arson- Total sentence of 19 years, non-parole period of 16 years

Case 4:DPP v Jagroop [2008] VSC 25 (13 February 2008)

Heard in the Supreme Court of Victoria

This case details the killing of Nileshni Singh, by her husband Amitesh Jagroop after an argument Jagroop pushed Singh who then hit her head on the gutter and began shaking – Jagroop dragged her body to a body of water close by and left her there to die

Charges brought against the defendant:- Manslaughter

Ruling:The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge of manslaughter

Sentencing:- 10 years imprisonment, 7 years non-parole

Case 5:DPP v Barnwell [2002] VSC 280 (5 July 2002)

Heard in the Supreme Court of Victoria

This case details the killing of Luke O’Keefe by Mr. Barnwell, his flat mate. Mr Barnwell accidentally shot Luke O’Keefe killing him, after he was playing with the weapon

Ruling: Mr Barnwell pleaded guilty to manslaughter

Sentencing:Four years imprisonment, two years non-parole
