1. The stages in the formation of the gospelsStage 1: The Ministry of JesusTraditions dating from Jesus words and deeds during his ministry in the late 20s [example from John 9: Jesus was known as a healer]Stage 2: Post-Resurrectional Preaching of the ApostlesConvictions about Jesus that arose after the Resurrection, especially that he was the divine Lord and Son of God [example: the blind man worships Jesus, John 9:38].Stage 3: The Writing of the Gospels by the EvangelistsTexts about Jesus that are shaped by the situations, concerns, and insights of the Gospel writers themselves [example: the blind mans parents fear the Jews, as if Jews are a separate group, John 9:22].2. The hidden/silent years of Jesus ChristThe hidden life of Jesus Christ lasted from His return to Nazareth at the age of twelve until He entered into public life, at the age of thirty.Of this part of Christ's life all we directly read from Holy Scripture are two statements: "And He went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them.... And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and grace before God and men" (Luke 2:51, 52). In these two sentences is contained the history ofeighteen yearsof the life of Jesus Christ, the God-Man.In the Temple, at the early age of twelve, Jesus had proved His wisdom before the doctors of the law. As St. Luke writes, "And all who were listening to him were amazed at his understanding and his answers" (Luke 2:47). But did He continue after this unusual and favorable beginning; did He stay on to preach His doctrine? No; instead, He meekly followed His parents as a young child of that age, and went to live with them in obscurity in Nazareth.3. The start of Jesus public ministry
a) What event in his life signaled its beginning ?
Thepublic ministryofJesusbegins withhis baptism
b) Where did it take place ?
According to the gospel of John, John baptized people in "Bethany beyond the Jordan" (John 1:28) This place is also known as Bethabarain the province ofPerea.
c) Where did Jesus go immediately after the event, how is it practiced in the church liturgy today?
After his baptism, Jesus went to the Judean desert and fasted there for 40 days and nights. Fasting for the roman catholics means the reduction of one's intake of food to one full meal (which may not contain meat on Fridays throughout Lent) and two small meals in the morning and evening. This is usually done during lent season
4. What are the 3 temptations of Jesus? a) Based on the story
i. How is the nature of temptation presented? The temptation of hunger- The lust of the flesh The temptation of power and wealth- The lust of the eyes The temptation of instant acclaim- The pride of life ii. What is symbolized by each temptation? The temptation of hunger- this represents mans primitive desires. Our crave for physical needs (ex. food, shelter, love, companionship) The temptation of power and wealth- mans greedy ambition. The devil will grant man money and power only if man worships him and becomes his slave. The temptation of instant acclaim- The glamour of all that they think is splendid. The devil taunts Jesus to jump off a cliff to, to prove if that he is the real messiah. This symbolizes man manipulating each other and more often than not making a bargain with God for out wishes
iii. How did Jesus overcome the temptation ?Jesus answered with the Word. Even when the devil misquoted the Bible to Jesus, Jesus answered back with the Scripture he knew.
b) In your own, in real life what is it that we have to practice to overcome temptationsWe must always learn to pray to God when we are tempted to do wrong things. We must always remember that despite knowing that, more often than not, these shortcuts are not worth it. God might have created a long treacherous path, but this is the path that God wants us to take for us to be able to learn. We must also try to have time to read the bible to be able to answer to our doubts, fears and temptations.
