inpatient Services

neonatologistsThe Mid-Hudson Valley’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), located at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, offers a host of state-of-the-art technologies and trained personnel to ensure the best outcome for extremely premature newborns and other infants with special medical needs. When a baby is prematurely born, or is an at-term newborn with critical medical issues, a neonatologist joins the team of hospital caregivers. Neonatologists are pediatricians specializing in the care of newborns, and they are available around the clock to provide the latest in diagnosis and treatment. They work with other NICU staff to ensure the highest level of sophisticated care for the young patient’s lungs and airways, cardiovascular system, brain and nervous system, skin, nutritional needs, and overall health.

sUrgical Physician assistantsEach of our hospitals is committed to providing the best care possible for inpatients. Among the services that allow us to do so is our staff of surgical physician assistants. Physician assistants (PAs) are trained in the same academic coursework as are physicians, and are medically licensed to examine, diagnose, and treat patients. Surgical PAs are specially trained in operative procedures and assist the surgeon in the operating room. In addition, surgical PAs in our hospitals are on duty day and night, every day of the year, to monitor patients after surgery and ensure continuity of high quality care. Every patient’s primary care physician, and other caregivers in and outside the hospital, work with the PAs as a patient-oriented team to deliver quality, cost-effective care for any issue that may arise.

hosPitalistsHospitalists, available at all three hospitals, are fully trained and board certified medical doctors who specialize in the care of patients admitted to the hospital. With the focus of their practice on inpatient care, Hospitalists are attentive to the medical needs of each patient on a daily basis. If you are admitted for a stay in the hospital, your primary care physician will be in frequent contact with the Hospitalist, as will any other specialists you may be seeing. In addition to overseeing and evaluating your medical treatment, Hospitalists are available to answer questions, and will write prescriptions for any necessary medications upon discharge. Because Hospitalists do not see patients outside the hospital, your primary care provider once again is your care-managing doctor after discharge. If you do not have a primary care physician, the Hospitalists and other clinical staff can recommend local providers.

intensiVistsVassar Brothers Medical Center is proud to bring an additional group of medical specialists—Intensivists—to its team of inpatient caregivers for hospitalized patients. Intensivists are physicians with advanced training in the care of critically ill or injured patients. Intensivists apply their knowledge and special skills to the needs of patients in the intensive care unit, as well as in other areas of the hospital as needed. Intensivists work closely with other doctors, nurses, pharmacists, case managers, nutritionists, and other care-givers to ensure the best critical care. With an around-the-clock presence at the hospital, Intensivists are always available to attend incoming emergency room patients, patients already in intensive care, or any other inpatient needing new or additional critical support.

Many of the services provided by health Quest Medical Practice are performed only in the hospital. the following information

highlights some of these services.

Using a collaborative approach in a multidisciplinary breast center facility with evidence-based medicine is just the beginning of the story at the Dyson Center

for Cancer Care. Our team of caring clinicians dedicates themselves to provide state-of-the-art care tailored to each individual patient and create a personal treatment plan within the context of a supportive, focused and healing-centered environment.

Dr. Angela J. Keleher, Director of Breast Surgery, completed a clinical breast fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center. She practiced in Pittsburgh before coming to the Dyson Center for Cancer Care in 2007. She then was joined by Dr. Gregory J. Zanieski in 2010, who completed his surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

In addition to the two surgeons, the team includes

Sara Winterleitner, Adult Nurse Practitioner who is board certified in both Oncology and Breast Cancer Care from the Oncology Nursing Society. Sara has been caring for oncology patients in the Hudson Valley for more than 20 years and is in charge of the High Risk Center. Two new additions to the Division of Breast Surgery Team are Nurse Practitioner Paula Portelli, and Physician Assistant Alexa Morgese. Paula has extensive clinical experience obtained at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and is a certified Clinical Breast Navigator. Alexa was previously practicing at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, NYC, and joins us with a great passion for care of breast patients.

Breast cancer can be overwhelming and at Health Quest’s Breast Surgery Division; you’ll find experts to help you every step of the way.

“it was my childhood ambition to become a heart doctor. For me it’s about patient care, always doing the right thing and treating each patient like you would your own family.” —dr. Mohan sarabu, Facs, Facc

it’s no wonder that Health Quest’s Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie was voted one of America’s

top 100 facilities for cardiovascular services by the medical journal Modern Healthcare. It has been rated in the top five percent in the nation for cardiac surgery by HealthGrades® four years in a row, and is currently ranked second in New York State (2012). The department is led by New York State’s leading cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Mohan Sarabu, FACS, FACC, who brings a truly rare level of passion and technique to his craft; so much so that he was named Top Doctor in 2004 by New York magazine as well as 2007 Physician of the Year by the hospital itself.

Dr. Sarabu heads a first-rate team of cardiothoracic surgeons with nearly a century of experience. The team includes Dr. Peter Zakow, FACS, FACC, Dr. Rohit Shahani, MCh, FACS, FACC and Dr. Arun Bhutani, MBBS, along with a host of cardiothoracic surgical PAs and cardiothoracic/critical care nurses, physical therapists, and nutritionists, all of whom are trained to deliver the most sophisticated diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation services available.

Dr. Sarabu and his fellow surgeons often conduct free lectures at health centers and other facilities, and the doctor himself always looks forward to speaking with former patients and their families in the community.

dr. Joseph Christiana always knew he wanted to excel in the office, the hospital, the lab, and the consulting room alike. Being on Health Quest’s cardiology

team gives him the chance to live that dream, plus some very special rewards. Like seeing a patient in the office after addressing numerous complex issues before her valve replacement surgery. Dr. Christiana earned his MD from New York Medical College and completed an internship and residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Westchester Medical Center.

Another member of the team is Dr. Ali Hammoud who earned his MD at NYU. He then completed a residency in internal medicine at NYU, Bellevue Hospital and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Westchester Medical Center.

Joining the cardiology team is Dr. Vikas Jindal, who received his MD from Boston University Medical School and completed an internship in internal medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital. He also completed an internal medicine residency at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where he went on to become fellowship trained in interventional and general cardiology.

The fourth member of the team is Nurse Practitioner Sabrina Stent, who brings her own wealth of experience. Sabrina earned a BSN at Binghamton University, an MSN in nursing from Mount Saint Mary College, and completed internships in a wide variety of settings. She’s been charge nurse in a critical care intensive care unit and served a busy cardiology practice as a nurse practitioner before coming to Health Quest.

“Whether we’re treating you for blood pressure or sending you for open heart surgery, cardiac care can make a huge positive difference in longevity and in the quality of that life. opened in 2012, the Center for Healthy Aging is a comprehensive resource designed to meet the needs of older adults. A complete geriatric

assessment including common elder care concerns such as falls, skin care, memory loss and management of multiple prescriptions is the first step in providing custom-tailored care in both inpatient and outpatient treatment. Among other services, the Center provides computer based neuro-psychological testing and social worker consultations for patients and caregivers facing bereavement, depression, life transitions, and other emotional concerns.

Early in her career, Dr. Friedman realized she had a special affinity for mature individuals. Beyond simply finding their conversation delightful, she began to recognize gaps in the way their health care was being provided—needs that she was sure could be met in a better way.

Dr. Friedman completed her BA in Psychology at Atlanta’s Emory University and earned her MD at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. After completing her internship at the Department of Family Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Dr. Friedman went on to become fellowship trained in geriatrics. She is a member of the American Board of Family Physicians and the American Geriatric Society.

As medical director of the Center for Healthy Aging, located on the campus of Northern Dutchess Hospital, she helps patients and their caregivers to identify and cope with the concerns that can impact independence and quality of life by working with primary care providers and specialists as needed to create the safest, most positive experience possible at every step along the way.

“With the right kind of help, older people can keep their level of independence as high as possible. catching problems early and supporting healthy habits makes it possible for them to stay engaged with their interests and social activities—the things that make them feel like themselves.”—dr. “I became a maternal-fetal specialist because I really enjoy helping guide women through pregnancy.”—Dr. Kimberly Heller

Before Health Quest’s Division of Maternal Fetal Health Medicine opened in 2008, pregnant women in need of specialized care had to travel outside the

region for high-quality services. Heading this full-time specialty department—the only one of its kind in the Hud-son Valley—is Dr. Kimberly Heller, who has been a prac-ticing obstetrician/gynecologist since 1985. Dr. Heller is a resource for high-risk mothers as well as other practitioners needing referrals for their patients. A key component of Dr.

Heller’s approach is pre-conception counseling, in which she advises mothers-to-be on the level of risk, if any, during pregnancy due to their personal medical history.

Dr. Heller uses specialized ultrasound monitoring techniques to support her high-risk patients. She is a two-time recipient of the APGO Medical Education Excellence in Teaching Award and previously served as the associate director of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Pennsylvania’s Wellspan Health System.

health Quest’s new Division of Neurosurgery and Spine is now under the direction of Dr. Jack McNulty. Dr. McNulty has been practicing in

the Hudson Valley for over ten years and has acted as the Chief of Neurosurgery for Vassar Brothers Medical Center since 2007. Dr. McNulty graduated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in chemistry. It was during his time as a student that Dr. McNulty attended the first neuroscience class taught at RPI, and thus sparked his life long interest in the nervous system.

After completing further studies in chemistry, he earned his MD from Albany Medical College. Dr. McNulty completed his neurosurgical residency at New York

Medical College with rotations in neurology and functional neurosurgery at Yale and Massachusetts General Hospital respectively. Dr. McNulty was the Chief Resident at both St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City and at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

Dr. McNulty is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He is well known for his adept handling of complex cranial surgeries as well as minimally invasive approaches to spinal disorders. Providing cutting edge and personalized care, Dr. McNulty and his capable support staff offer the highest levels of neurosurgical care to our community.

“in neurosurgery, we see two types of patients. there are people who need surgery for potentially life threatening brain problems, and those who need it for debilitating spine conditions. though the spine operations are less complex, they often free the patients from terrible pain, allowing them to return to their normal lives. in both cases, we get to make a huge difference in someone’s life.” —dr. The office is led by board certified physicians Dr. Ely Nathan, Dr. Dean Bloch and Dr. Meredith McDowell. dr. Anthony D’Ambrosio loves being a Health Quest doctor because our philosophy aligns with his. Preventative care, common sense and treating

the whole patient are what our Primary Care offices are all about, and those are Dr. D’Ambrosio’s favorite parts of the job—listening, educating, and making sure that every patient gets the best possible care. He is board certified in family medicine and enjoys treating a full spectrum of ages, from newborns to adults.

Before coming to Fishkill, Dr. D’Ambrosio’s background included practicing family medicine and urgent care in Middletown. During his residency at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania, he practiced in a range of settings, from prenatal care visits in a hospital to the high school football field and into nursing homes. As chief resident, he polished his talent for leadership, organization and taking medicine out into the community, and he’s excited about building his local practice into a force for good health.

dr. Maura Sullivan thinks she inherited the desire to be a doctor from her father, a New York City firefighter who was born into a family of immigrants.

Dr. Sullivan says that her dad instilled in her an interest in medicine, and her own skill in the sciences and dealing with people made the profession a natural fit. She attended College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, before earning her Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Now practicing for 15 years, Dr. Sullivan joined Health Quest after practicing in Red Hook.

as a primary care provider, Dr. David S. Cho enjoys guiding patients toward better health and seeing them improve over time, rejoicing with them in their

physical achievements as well as comforting them in times of illness and grief. It’s the kind of “old school” medicine many patients long for: Continuity of care wherever his patients may need him, from routine office visits to attending at the hospital to house calls. He believes that the anxiety and stress of illness can be greatly relieved when a patient is confident that their primary care doctor is aware and involved every step of the way.

Dr. Cho earned his MD at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn and went on to an

internship and residency in internal medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in New York. Dr. Cho is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Joining Dr. Cho in our Hyde Park office is Dr. Gabrielle Wolfsberger.
