NEWS…A Walk Through Dementia

Have a go atputting togetherthese beautiful

chocolate Easternests. The perfect

treat at Easter.

Throughout March and April, staff will be invited to comealong to our ‘Living with Dementia’ workshops whichfeatures A Walk Through Dementia - a smartphone app to

engage the public with a first-person experience of dementia.

The experience is designed to help the user think beyondmemory loss to gain a fully immersive insight into the variedsymptoms people with dementia can experience in everydaylife.

The app contains three films, told from the perspective of aperson named Ann. Each film uses a combination of computer-generated environments and 360 degree video sequences toillustrate in powerful detail, how even the most everyday taskscan become challenging for someone with dementia.

The user is placed in Ann’s shoes, experiencing the symptomsand difficulties she faces when shopping, walking from thesupermarket and making a cup of tea at home.

We are all individuals with unique attributes, as are the peoplewe care for. Avoiding the objectification and negative labellingof a person with dementia is central to both person-centredcare and humanised care. In other words, seeing the person andnot their diagnosis and responding to individual unique humanneeds.

If we have a better understanding of dementia and can putourselves in the shoes of people with the condition, we can bemore empathetic towards them. By responding to their uniqueemotional needs, we can enhance the compassionate care wegive.
