The right lighting is one of the twothings you absolutely must have in yourhome, began LaDifference co-ownerSarah Paxton. The second is a good

    mattress.Usually, homeowners enter a dark

room and make a beeline for the lightswitch. While its more of a reflex than aplanned routine, this flick of a switchconvenience is not sufficient for asophisticated and stylish living space.

Accessorizing a wardrobe, you addshoes, jewelry and a purse to completethe outfit. Lighting adds that finishingtouch to the home, said Carole Louie,

an award-winning interior designer atVirginia Wayside Furniture.

While lighting is not tangible likewindow panels or area rugs, its purposeas a home accent is equally powerful. The best home lighting does justice tothe whole interior from bringing outsubtle hues and textures in fabric toshowing the details in the dcor. Butthere is more to lighting than whatmeets the eye.

Lighting truly affects mood. Itsfunctional, but it also changes the colorsand angles of a space. The single light inthe ceiling is the contractors minimumrequirement, Paxton said. Its the

ambient lighting that illuminates thespace in every sense of the word.Without it, people are missing thenuances of their space.

Ambient lighting is a rooms mainlight source. The ambient light blendsinto the background without workingin one distinct direction. People aremoving away from overhead lightingtoward ambient lighting for a morerelaxed and inviting space, Louie said.

source that serves a function. To splash extrabrightness onto a craft or book, lamps andfixtures provide a practical purpose. Or, withaccent lighting, an eye-catching centerpieceis dramatically spotlighted. For a moresubtle but equally stylized option, there isdecorative lighting. The lamp or light fixtureeither complements other home accents orties the room together. The physical piecebecomes relevant to the dcor, often forfeitingfunctionality for appearance.

Luckily, updating light fixtures is arelatively simple and budget-friendly homeimprovement. With attention to ambience,

home owners can transform the visual appealand vibe in every room. Lighting helpsour customers make a statement about whothey are. Its an opportunity to showcasepersonality, Louie explained.

Its easy to change lighting fixtures,Paxton added. Lighting as a home accessoryis something anyone can do. Its not evendifficult to tear out a fixture.

People go with the safer choices for thebigger pieces. But because lighting is usuallynot a huge investment, dont be afraid toexpress yourself. The new trend is to makeoutside-the-box choices, explained Louie.

Richmond is known forits traditional taste butwere sliding into a morecontemporarydirection.

Homeownersshould amendthe ambience killerthat is blindingoverhead lighting, whatPaxton referred to as thehospital-ward look. Bothexperts tout the benefits of walllighting, popular in the 1930sand 40s and brings choices tosetting moods. Paxton strongly

recommended adding wallsconces. Added Louie, Wallsconces are a great way to createhighly-versatile lighting, perfectto balance a room, add height orutilize up- and down-lighting.For task lighting, a well-placedsconce can be the tour-de-force ofa well-decorated reading nook.

With new advances in lighting, compact fluorescent and LED

lighting are both lookingespecially radiant. LED lightingglows with a crisp white light, providing a nice effect for the

work area. Plus, thebulbs dont burn out.

    For truly illuminatedinterior design, all

    four lighting stylesshould be incorporated

indoors. Remember that astrategically-placed lamp in a

dark corner or a new fixture canflip your style switch. And, headto LaDiff and Virginia Wayside toget enlightened by the experts.

Walk into your space, but dont

turn on the overhead. Look for thedarkest corner of the room thatswhere you can use accent lighting.A lamp does not have to be ashade on a post, advised Paxton.

In the outside world, Louiesaid, we get bombarded bytechnology. You want to comehome to chill and get back toyourself. And the right lightinghelps a person do just that.
