Leaves are changing and pumpkins are appearing on doorsteps. As vibrant shades of orange fill the outdoors, they’re also becoming in-creasingly popular inside.
Upholstery fabrics, paint colours, furniture and acces-sories that range from neon orange to tangerine to terra cotta are getting attention this season.
But orange isn’t for every-one. When interior designers suggest decorating with or-ange, clients can get nervous. Designer Kyle Schuneman often eases homeowners into using orange by suggesting variations on it.
“The idea of orange can sound juvenile and unsophis-ticated,” Schuneman says. “But if you go with umbers, burnt bricks or terra cottas,
you can sell a client on the idea much easier.”
The key, he says, is using orange creatively and care-fully.
Here, Schuneman and de-signers Brian Patrick Flynn and Betsy Burnham offer tips on decorating with the
colour orange, and avoiding the pitfalls of using it badly.
HOW MUCH TO USE?Orange can be overpow-
ering as the main colour in a room. But, like red, it works brilliantly as an ac-cent colour. “I don’t suggest
painting your walls orange,” Burnham says. “But maybe there’s an orange in the print on your pillows.”
It can be casual (“maybe you bring in a garden stool that’s bright orange”), or chic and sophisticated (“think of Hermes orange, those shop-
ping boxes”), she says.In a bedroom with muted,
grey-blue walls, Burnham added lacquered end tables in a rich shade of orange.
Orange paint can also be a great way to spruce up a dated piece of furniture.
“Think about painting a
great old chest of drawers a beautiful shade in a high gloss,” Schuneman says, “and changing out the knobs to really special crystal knobs to make a statement piece in a room.”

F2 Saturday, October 6, 2012 Leader-Post • leaderpost.comhome s
I’ve been saying it for years. The home inspection indus-try is like the Wild West — a lot of cowboys but not a lot of sheriffs. Throughout most of Canada, the industry is self-regulated by different asso-ciations with different sets of standards. No one’s playing by the same set of rules and it’s caused bad outcomes. But this is starting to change.
More and more provinces are setting standards that will help make sure hom-eowners get what they pay for. Until recently, Alberta and British Columbia were the only provinces that re-quired home inspectors to be licensed. But now Ontario is starting to set minimum industry standards and I’m proud to be working with the provincial government to help push this forward. It’s definitely a step in the right direction.
As part of its consumer protection initiative the Ontario government is be-ginning to set minimum qualifications for all home inspectors operating in the province. The rest of Canada needs to get behind this so
we’re all on the same page moving forward.
I don’t care where you live — Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Nunavut or Saskatchewan — every Canadian should be getting a qualified and full assessment of their home every time they get a home inspection. There needs to be consistency between all home inspections performed in Canada no matter where you live.
Every home inspection should be good and protect the huge investment hom-eowners are making.
Too many homeowners have ended up in bad situa-tions because a home inspec-tion didn’t turn up major issues. These are problems that should have been caught before homeowners buy their home. Things like dan-gerous electrical, mould, bad structure, asbestos, under-sized HVAC. And this is after the homeowners have had a home inspection.
It’s bad enough that hom-eowners are wasting their money — some home inspec-tion reports aren’t worth the paper they’re written on. But the real danger here is all the problems homeowners are forced to face just because a home inspection didn’t do its job, which is to protect the homeowner. I’m talking about thousands of dollars worth of repairs. Do you think many homeowners who just bought a house will
have that kind of money? In most cases, homeown-
ers — and their families — will live in a home that needs major repairs for years. Why? Because they bought a house that turned out to be a can of worms and they can’t afford to repair it.
Sometimes these condi-tions are bad for their health. If we’re talking about some-thing like dangerous electri-cal, it can be life threatening. Not to mention all the emo-tional stress these families are put through.
The argument goes some-thing like this: Home in-spectors can only comment on what they can see. So if they miss things like mould, faulty wiring or improper ventilation they can’t be held accountable. Home inspec-tors can’t go moving furni-ture, poking holes in drywall or ripping up floors. I get that. But I’ve seen plenty of homes where the clues on the surface tell me there are huge problems brewing un-derneath.
Every home inspector in the country should know where to look, what to look for and what it all means. For example, everyone thinks icicles on the roof during winter are nice.
But icicles tell me that there are problems with the roof and insulation in the at-tic — and every home inspec-tor should know this too. I’ve heard of home inspectors
who will do an inspection in the evening after they fin-ish their day job, and I don’t know how well you can ex-amine a roof properly in the dark.
Without a doubt, there are good home inspectors work-ing in the industry. But we need to take the necessary measures that will make sure there are only good inspec-tors working in the industry. We can’t afford not too.
We need more home in-spectors who have a complete understanding of all of the components in a home and how they work together.
Home inspectors who can see if a supporting wall has been removed or structure compromised. Home inspec-tors that are proud of their work and care about the peo-ple it affects. These are the good guys and there needs to be more of them.
I think a lot of us want the same thing. I know hom-eowners do. And I know good home inspectors understand that by raising standards across the board we’re hon-ouring their skills, strength-ening their industry and im-proving Canadian housing.
It’s a win-win, folks.

Mike Holmes takes a look at an electrical box. Not all home inspectors look for the same things, but that’s starting to change.
Inspection industry changes
WHICH SHADES ARE BEST?All three designers like
earthy burnt orange tones that are almost as brown as they are orange.
“With a burnt orange, you’d be surprised what the paint chip looks like,” Burnham says. “It looks more like a brown. But you paint a piece of furniture that colour, and it reads orange. It does what it’s supposed to do — it brings some whimsy.”
Flynn also likes using red-orange, “ideal for more youthful or edgy rooms.”
The style of your home may help determine which shades you choose, says Sc-huneman.
“Terra cotta is a beautiful backdrop for a traditional or retro feeling space, while pops of a more neon orange could be really fun for a modern space.”
W h a t e v e r t o n e y o u choose, Schuneman sug-gests testing a sample if you’ve decided to take the plunge and paint with or-ange. “Try three or four dif-ferent shades,” he says, and view them in various types of daylight and artificial light.
Also, he says, “orange is a lot like red when you’re painting, so you’re going to need three or four coats to get an even finish. But the end product will be a beau-tiful cosy space.”
Just one word of warn-ing: “Don’t go with a true shade of orange,” Schune-man says. “It will feel like Pee-Wee’s Playhouse.”
WHERE DOES IT WORK?Orange can look good
anywhere in your home, but these designers say it’s especially beautiful for bed-rooms.
“Orange is my favourite choice for kids’ rooms, be-cause it’s totally gender-neutral,” Flynn says.
“My favourite combo for a kids’ space is tangerine and white. It’s clean and classic.”
Schuneman agrees: “I love a warm shade of or-ange for a bedroom. My last bedroom was a burnt brick. It felt so warm and cozy,” he says. “It really works well with dim lighting at night,
but also can invigorate you to wake up in the morn-ing.”
Burnham is using orange and white gingham print draperies, along with navy blue and dark denim uphol-stery, to decorate the bed-room of a preteen boy. “It’s boyish, but sophisticated,” she says. “Not over-the-top country or anything. Sort of preppy.”
WHAT GOES WITH ORANGE?
“I love pairing grey with orange,” Schuneman says.
“It immediately amps up the hip factor and brings it into a contemporary set-ting. It works well because grey has a cool base, where orange is warm. So the bal-ance really creates harmony in a room.”
Along with pale greys and deep charcoals, orange also goes well with dark and light blues and also browns, taupe, cream or white.
WHAT TO AVOID?“I find yellow-orange the
hardest to work with,” Fly-nn says, “because it’s very limited in accent colour choices.” Burnham agrees, saying it’s best to avoid “that school-bus orange.”
If you’re going with a bright orange, just be sure you’ll enjoy it long-term.
Edgy, bright shades are “really going to pop and give your room some per-sonality,” Burnham says. But “a little goes a long way,” and what’s hot today may quickly go out of style.
“Like any trend,” she says, “use it sparingly.”

Big impact on a small
budgetSuzanne ROwePostmedia News
This is the entryway to the owner’s home. It is situated inside a driveway, so it leaves us only two feet out from the wall to create a miracle. The budget is tiny but the expec-tations are huge. The propri-etor already invested time and money on the interior with numerous renovations.
The mission: the door had to say welcome and the en-trance had to have a huge wow factor. (Beware, the tape will auto destruct as soon as I finish writing this sentence.)
A custom-made mini per-gola overhang would frame the space to give it a voca-tion. This architectural de-tail and two mural beams on each side, stained in opaque charcoal, could serve a prac-tical purpose. It would create a visual boundary, a cosy out-door room with inviting seat-ing areas.
Not seen here, the actual doors on the front side as well as the garage are cur-rently red. Although this colour is often my favourite choice, in this case the tawny shade of the bricks was visu-ally competing with the red hue. For instance, I would never wear a rust scarf with a red coat, would you? The same idea applies to rooms or houses. Pitchy black doors with red bricks and white windows are always classic and elegant. To make small quarters look more expan-sive, a repetition of the same colours is a plus. The exis-tent turquoise plastic chairs could easily be painted black
but a new pair of nonchalant folding ones, decorated with tailored white and black pip-ing seat cushions would look unparalleled and more con-temporary. As an added bo-nus, they wouldn’t take a lot of storage room.
Exotic furniture made out of natural wood stumps or roots are very in right now, but can be very expensive. An improvised table recuperated from the cutting of a birch or maple in the neighbourhood could act as its rich cousin with no cost at all. Add a black or stainless steel sleek serving tray on top and voila! Lemonade anyone?
A made-to-measure, ample in height and depth, window box will be constructed in the same width as the win-dow and will host two dif-ferent size annuals as well as cascading English ivy. On the left side of the room area will be the new barbecue sta-tion. Under the bigger win-dow, a sturdy ebony bench enhanced with black and white cushions could serve as extra seating or serving table. To use all the avail-able room, three dark flower containers stowed under the long seat, will bring a nice organic pop of white against the inky tint and shadow from the furnishing.
Details are essential, espe-cially in small spaces. The window treatment has to be constant in type, continuous in colour and also harmo-nized with the exterior. To minimize the appearance of the unsightly pipe on the right, it should be painted the exact colour of the wall behind it; top part in reddish-brown and base in cement tone. The various samples of weeds in between the driveway and wall should be eliminated. To finish the look and for brighter luminosity, a bold electrical fixture will be centred on top of the door
suspended from the wooden roof structure. Two pillar candle glass wall lanterns would provide a romantic mood with a softer glow for a quiet tete-a-tete. On a clear night, one could even lie back on the bench and try to star-gaze at the serene strip of the night sky between the two towering buildings.
This is a column in which designer Suzanne Rowe se-lects homes that could ben-efit from a little inexpensive help in increasing their curb appeal. After examining photographs, she sketches a rendering of what they could look like with a few minor changes. We hope you enjoy the results.

Entryway details provide welcome with a wow
with the front door off the driveway, creating an inviting entryway is especially challenging.
Postmedia News photosa custom-made pergola will create a visual boundary and an inviting outdoor space.
What is Old is New. Porchscape is a traditionally styled neighbourhood inHarbour Landing. The urban design includes, attractive street-trees, post-topstreet lights, and sidewalks separated from the street by boulevards. Frontporches and pedestrian friendly streetscapes are key traits to this style and aresure to create a warm and safe place to call home. Coming fall 2012!

Q: Our basement is complete-ly finished, but unfurnished, as we’ve spent the last two years renovating our entire house, including our outside deck. We’re now ready to tackle the basement. My hus-band thinks we can move our patio furniture to the base-ment during the winter. But wait, there is more. He wants to move the patio furniture back outside in the summer since we don’t spend much time inside in the warmer months. Please tell him, in writing, that he is insane!
P.S. We have a healthy mar-riage. For now.
A: I had a good laugh when I read your question.
If you have patio furni-ture that looks like it could double indoors then sure, I can see a few pieces coming inside. Good-looking woven tuxedo sofas, armchairs and even coffee tables can work indoors. Check out the Andrew Richard web-site (andrewricharddesigns.com) for examples. Moving the entire woven set to the basement may look like you brought your high-end patio furniture inside because you had no where else to put it. Plus, the decor in your base-ment will look entirely dif-ferent than the rest of your home. A couple of outdoor armchairs, paired with an upholstered indoor sofa and
wooden coffee table, howev-er, will work.
In the photo we’ve in-cluded, the blue wicker cof-fee table that was originally intended for outdoor use. While the pale blue wicker sofa that’s peeking into the bottom corner of the photo came from a sunroom, it could easily be used outside with indoor-outdoor cush-ions. The Stockholm sofa is from Ikea. I love decorating this inexpensive tuxedo sofa on projects with a tight bud-get because it works with any style of furniture.
The Stockholm sells for $1,599 and can be dressed up with silk pillows and Louis chairs, but also would look great with a few of your out-door pieces. Some of the pil-
lows in the photo are made with indoor-outdoor fabric. Even the wooden lamp is de-signed for outdoor use, but you would never know. And that’s the key, if only you know that your basement furniture is meant for the great outdoors, then don’t sweat it.
But if your patio furniture is of the white plastic gro-cery store variety, or you’re talking about aluminum chairs and a table with a hole in the middle, then, and I mean this in the nicest way, you are insane because there is positively no place for an umbrella in your basement.
Send your small-space question to asksampynn@
gmail.com.

Q: I never thought I’d be writing begrudging my good fortune, but here goes. My husband and I are moving into a new-build home at the end of October and our mas-ter bedroom is practically all windows. At the time of pur-chase (when it was nothing but a floor plan on paper), I was excited by all the natu-ral light, but now that it’s time to dress the windows, I’m feeling overwhelmed. My husband requires a dark room in order to sleep but I don’t want the room to be en-tirely blackout blinds. Help!
A: I’m sure it’s hard to gar-ner a lot of sympathy from your girlfriends on your im-pending window problem (what with all that enviable natural light), but I complete-ly understand your concern.
When you purchase a house from plans, it’s easy to get caught up in romanticiz-ing the details without think-ing ahead to the practicality of it all. I’ve selected a won-derfully sophisticated mas-ter bedroom designed by the Chicago firm James Thomas (jtliving.com) in the accom-panying photo. Not only is the room a calming, elegant sanctuary but it also shares your window dilemma.
I like that James layered the windows with both
blinds and decorative side panels. It helps soften what could be an overwhelm-ing amount of glass in the room. The Roman blinds are mounted in the inside of the window casing (referred to as an “inside mount” in the design biz) and have a
blackout lining that prohib-its light from penetrating through the main fabric. If your husband is adamant about complete blackout then I recommend placing Velcro on both the back edge of the blind and the window casing. That way, when you
lower the blind at night, you can also Velcro the edge so that light doesn’t leak in through the sides in the morning. If that sounds like a lot of prep work just to get ready for bed, it’s because it is. Though, like washing your face and brushing your
teeth, it can eventually be-come routine.
Alternatively, you could do an “outside mount” and hang your Roman blinds on top of the window cas-ing greatly reducing any light leakage and time spent on creating a dark cave in
which to sleep. The side panels in this
room are purely decorative. Decorative panels (as op-posed to functional panels) definitely have their place in decor, and this room demon-strates that perfectly.
Look closely at the win-dow on the left of the fire-place and notice that the panel would not completely cover the window if drawn closed. Because the two win-dows on either side of the fireplace are different sizes, James helps the illusion of symmetry by making the drapery panels the same size and bringing balance to that side of the room. Instead of focusing on the mismatched windows, our eyes concen-trate on the identical drap-ery panels on either side.
If you don’t like the layered look, you could go with func-tional drapery panels lined with blackout lining. In this case, you simply draw the drapes at night (or midday for that matter) and your room will be sleepy-time dark.
Another affordable option would be to hang a faux Ro-man blind in the window with a blackout roller blind behind it. You get a softening effect with the faux Roman and the required blackout from the hidden roller blind. Bedtime would be easy.
Congratulations on your new home. I hope I’ve given you with usable ideas for cov-ering your many windows.
Advice
Layering window treatments will improve sleep

James thomas designed this bedroom for deep sleep, hence the layered window dressing.

It is a truth universally acknowl-edged that moving day is stressful. The packing of the things, the goodbyes to your old home and the moving of the items you’ve packed will all take time and effort. Pos-sessions may get broken, thrown away or lost in the shuffle (at least temporarily).
And while moving into a condo is not as simple as moving into a single home, it’s also an exciting moment. So here is some advice you can use to make your shift to condo living a little closer to flaw-less.
You may have booked your mov-ers months ago, having carefully chosen them based on recommen-dations from your neighbour and your mother-in-law. That’s a great start. But if not, be sure to get three quotes and remember that you get what you pay for — the lowest quote is not always the best or least expensive in the long run.
Mike Kohlberg has been in the moving business for 35 years and says once you have your three quotes, go by your comfort level with the mover rather than the lowest price.
It’s wonderful knowing you’ve selected people who will treat your “goods” with as much respect as you do. But don’t leave it there. Make sure to tell your movers ex-actly what they’ll be moving.
Many people ignore items from the list thinking they may add them on moving day, but the truck that accompanies your movers may then be too small and they will have to scramble around to order a larger truck. Additionally, the com-pany may not bring enough people to move such a large load and your day and stress will thus be pro-longed, while the cost rises. While local moves are generally billed by time, long-distance moves are charged according to weight.
When moving to a condo, you want to make sure you tell your movers exactly where you are mov-ing. Is it a highrise or townhouse? Are there many steps or levels? Some condos are two-storey or have a loft while some townhouses are four and five levels. This may make a difference as access to the property will be different and your movers need to plan ahead.
If your last move was into a detached home, this difference may not occur to you. Single-fam-ily dwellings have easier access — while condo access is limited by time, parking, traffic and use of service and occupant elevators.
This last concern is a big one.
If you arrive with a moving crew and find that another occupant is moving in or out, you may have to share the elevator. This will be much less convenient as you will have to share space and time with this new neighbour, which may not be appreciated and may add to your and the movers’ stress level.
When booking your elevator, check the condo building’s rules on how long you may book the el-evator as there may be constraints on this.
According to Kohlberg, the best advice for your move is to ask the condo corporation a lot of ques-tions and give your moving compa-ny as much advance information as you can. This is why you must ensure that you have booked the elevator for your move-in date.
On top of this restriction is the added headache of parking prob-lems. Many movers may skirt around this problem by double parking, leading to a parking ticket that is calculated into your move. This is why it’s important to be specific about the details of your new condo when moving.
Kohlberg has been in the mov-ing business for 35 years and owns both Royal Moving Inc. in Ottawa and Outaouais Moving in nearby Hull, Que.
He tells me about a move in which a client got stuck with pay-ing additional costs when the large moving van holding their beloved belongings could not access their new condo building’s entrance,
due to construction and contrac-tors’ trucks.
The movers had to park far away and rent a smaller truck to shuttle the belongings from one truck to another and then begin the move into the condo. Had the owner waited until the condo was com-pleted, the costs would have been much lower.
Having considered outside re-strictions, such as those related to parking, let’s move inside. Remem-ber that moves to condo buildings usually necessitate the use of el-evators. These moves may take longer as you have to wait for the time it takes the load to go up and the movers to come back down between loads. The higher the floor the longer the wait. For this reason, a three- to four-hour move
may take much longer.Don’t forget to consider other
building restrictions. Is there, for instance, a service entrance for movers? Can the lobby be used dur-ing moves? What kind of access to the building will the movers have on that particular day? These is-sues are all key as they impact the price of your move. Remember, time is money.
So use your condo sense and get your information organized along with your boxes so you can be a mover and shaker.

Q: I want to paint my living/dining room, which has oilbase paint on it. To prepare the walls to use latex paint, I was told I had two choices: Go with a primer and then two coats of paint or sand the wall lightly to take the gloss off and then go with a paint that has built in primer.
Because it was a large area, I went with the latter and did all the right stuff including washing the wall after. I was told not to skimp on the paint and not to go back and rework any missed area as it dries very quickly. The paint went on beautifully, however, when I went to do the second coat I saw that, in places, there were areas where the paint had actually dripped and then stopped midway. It was very noticeable and so discouraging. I then had to scrape it off, patch and redo. I am using a brand new microfibre 10 mm roller, the size suggested. I was so frustrated that I stopped painting after one wall. Have you ever come across this be-fore and if so what should I do dif-ferently when I get up the courage to finish the rest? Unfortunately I have another full gallon, so I will have to use it up.
A: I can feel your frustration be-cause I have found myself in simi-lar situations. Paint quality is often the culprit between a happy paint project and a screaming-on-the in-side moment. If the paint is thin, it will run and drip down the wall. If the paint is not adhering to the wall, it will also run down the wall.
Paint experts often recommend preparing walls with a trisodium phosphate wash before painting, to remove greasy residue caused by cooking and everyday dust. Since you followed the advice given to you by the retailer, why not take the paint back and talk to them about the issue that you are having.
When paint projects work the way they are supposed to, they can be a therapeutic, fun experience. Don’t hesitate to confer with the paint spe-cialist that sold you the paint (bring your receipt with you).

Chavez’s use of army
criticizedFrank Bajak
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
CARACAS, Venezuela — The shadow of the Venezu-elan military hangs over Sunday’s presidential elec-tion, with many people won-dering how the armed forces might react if President Hu-go Chavez stumbles in his fight to stay in power.
Chavez has spent nearly 14 years consolidating con-trol over state institutions, but ultimately only the military has the clout to de-termine who will prevail if the election results are close and disputed.
The opposition contends Chavez has already been employing the military in a political role even though the constitution forbids it. His challenger, Henrique Capriles, tweeted a photo this week showing soldiers appearing to shed olive-green fatigue tops in favour of the red T-shirts worn by the “Chavistas” who crowd the president’s rallies.
“In my government no-body will be obliged to don the T-shirt of a political par-ty, least of all our soldiers,” Capriles wrote, putting new attention on the military’s potentially crucial postelec-tion role.
The information ministry didn’t respond to requests for comment on the claim by the opposition, which has long voiced concerns about Chavez putting his loyalists into the armed forces’ top commands.
“The armed forces will be the key arbiter of the elec-
tion process,” said Diego Moya-Ocampos, an analyst with IHS Global Insight. He said that will be especially true if Capriles manages to eke out a narrow victory and Chavez’s side resists.
Chavez’s own background shows how crucial, and di-vided, the military can be. As a 37-year-old lieutenant colonel, he led a failed 1992 coup attempt that brought him to widespread public at-tention. A decade later, after he was pardoned for the up-rising and then elected pres-ident, some military officers joined in a plot that ousted Chavez for two days in 2002. Both times, the coup failed in large part because a siz-able share of the military
refused to go along. The last successful coup
occurred when troops oust-ed military-imposed Presi-dent Marcos Perez Jimenez in 1958, during an era when coups across Latin America were far more common than they are now.
Retired military officers say there are deep divisions within the armed forces, but they believe many of the roughly 8,500 rank-and-file officers who form the core of the 125,000-strong mili-tary would accept the vot-ers’ choice.
The chairman of Venezue-la’s joint chiefs, Gen. Wilmer Barrientos, said on national television last month that the military would “heed
the constitution and respect the will of the people” in Sunday’s vote.
But some Chavistas in the military high command haven’t been acting impar-tially as another six-year term for their boss hangs in the balance.
The defence minister, Gen. Henry Rangel Silva, has been on state-run TV all week, here touring a remod-elled military hospital, there touting auto repair shops that he said the government plans to create under partial military control.
In late 2010, Rangel an-gered many Venezuelans by saying in a newspaper inter-view that neither the mili-tary nor the public would ac-
cept an opposition election victory over Chavez. The president later defended the general.
Rangel made headlines again this week with a claim that Capriles plans to dis-mantle the armed forces.
Capriles, a centre-left for-mer governor, had just an-nounced that he had chosen an active general, whom he did not identify, to be his de-fence minister.
The announcement indi-cated the military leader-ship is not entirely in lock-step with Chavez’s populist rule, which human rights groups say has consistently violated the civil liberties of its foes.
A recently retired senior
general who supports the opposition told The Associ-ated Press that dozens of officers, including generals, remain on active duty but without assigned jobs, ef-fectively shunted aside in favour of Chavez’s political loyalists
“There’s great turmoil in the institution,” said the re-tired officer, who agreed to discuss the situation only if not quoted by name, because he feared reprisals from the government.
He said Capriles’ camp has been holding secret meetings with active-duty officers at which “batter-ies are removed from cell-phones” so eavesdroppers can’t listen in.

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin turns 60 on Sun-day, his grip on power weaker than in the past but under little immediate threat if the oil price stays high.
Adoring supporters will cel-ebrate in cities from Siberia to Rostov-on-Don in southern Rus-sia, where the ruling party’s loyal Young Guard will unfurl a banner on a bridge which they say sym-bolizes Putin’s role by uniting Asia and Europe.
Opponents will make their feel-ings known much closer to home, protesting near Moscow’s Red Square under the banner: “We’re sending the old man into retire-ment.”
The organizers plan to send their own symbolic message by asking protesters to bring gifts suitable for a pensioner — any-thing, perhaps, from reading glasses to a pipe.
The man himself will be re-laxing with his close family and plans no special celebrations, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Pes-kov said. Just a few months into a third term as president, he may be reaching retirement age, but has no plans to retire.
After 12 years as Russia’s para-mount leader, opinion polls show Putin enjoys higher ratings than most Western politicians, but they are down from their peak during the oil-fuelled economic boom of his first presidency from 2000 un-til 2008.
In August, the independent Le-vada polling group said 48 per cent of Russians had a positive view of him compared to 60 per cent in May when he began a new six-year term.
“Age doesn’t matter in what Vladimir Putin does or does not do,” said Konstantin von Eggert, a political commentator, adding
that Putin’s views had changed little since he came to power.
“His vision is rather pragmatic and reduces a person to two func-tions — he can either be a friend or a foe.”
But a poll published this week showed one in five Russian wom-en would still be happy to marry him, even though he is about to reach an age at which he can col-lect his pension.
Interestingly enough, six per cent of respondents said they would definitely marry Putin, while 14 per cent said they would probably like to wed him, the Mos-cow-based Levada Center said in
a statement. Two-thirds said they wouldn’t, including 43 per cent of women who were definitely op-posed.
“Among women with second-ary educations and aged 25 to 39, a quarter said they would like to marry Vladimir Putin,” the poll-ing organization said. Twenty-four per cent of lower-class Rus-sians and 22 per cent of village residents said they were inter-ested.
Those most uninterested in marrying the three-term presi-dent were the wealthy, with 86 per cent saying they would pass up the chance, according to the poll.

ISTANBUL — Turkey’s prime min-ister said on Friday his country did not want war but warned Syr-ia not to make a “fatal mistake” by testing its resolve, and its army re-taliated for a third day after more mortar rounds from Syria landed on its soil.
In a belligerent speech to a crowd in Istanbul, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan warned Syrian President Bashar Assad that Turkey would not shy away from war if provoked.
The speech followed a Syr-ian mortar barrage on a town in southeast Turkey that killed five people on Wednesday.
Turkish artillery bombarded Syrian military targets on Wednes-
day and Thursday in response, killing several Syrian soldiers, and the Turkish parliament autho-rized cross-border military action in the event of further aggression.
“We are not interested in war, but we’re not far from war either. This nation has come to where it is today having gone through intercontinental wars,” Erdogan said in his speech.
“Those who attempt to test Tur-key’s deterrence, its decisiveness, its capacity, I say here they are making a fatal mistake.”
At least two mortar bombs fired from Syria landed in farmland in Turkey’s southern Hatay province on Friday, one of them around 50 metres into Turkish territory, and the military responded instantly, Hatay Governor Celalettin Lekesiz was quoted as saying by the state-run Anatolian news agency.
