    Though 83% of cases improved in varying degree withhomoeopathic therapy, 31% cases were cured withcomplete removal of subjective and objective symptomsand no relapse occurred for one year.

    Belladonna, Kali bichromicum, Lachesis, Natrumsulphuricum, Pulsatilla), Rhus toxicodendron andSiliceaare most indicated and effective medicines.

    2. Clinical evaluation ofhomoeopathic medicines in

    the management ofwithdrawal symptoms of drugdependents.

    Place(s) of study:

    Clinical Research Unit (Hom.),Varanasi (U.P.).

    1988 - 1994 Drug dependent cases were referred from Nav-Chetna

    Drug De-addiction centre, Varanasi.

    Out of 241 cases that followed up regularly; 83% casesshowed improvement in withdrawal symptoms. Rhus toxicodendron was found to be most effective

    medicine. Other medicines found effective are Avenasativa, Nux vomica, Arsenic album, Bryonia alba andChamomilla.

    Rhus toxicodendron, Arsenic album and Chamomillaare found to be effective in 10M potency while Bryoniaalbaand Nux vomicain 200C potency and Avena sativain mother-tincture.

    3. Clinical evaluation ofhomoeopathic medicines inbehavioural problems ofmentally retarded children

    Place(s) of study:

    Central Research Institute(Hom.), Kottayam (Kerala).

    1991 - 2001 Common behavioural problems in mentally retardedchildren like aggressiveness, destructiveness,

    disruptiveness etc. were studied.

    Out of 835 cases that followed up regularly 63% casesshowed improvement.

    Baryta carbonicumwas the most effective medicine inthe treatment of behavioural problems in mentallyretarded children.

    Other medicines found effective are Antimoniumcrudum, Argentum nitricum, Arsenicum album, Baryta

    carbonicum, Baryta muriaticum, Belladonna, Cannabisindica, Causticum, Chamomilla, Cina, Cuprummetallicum, Gelsemium, Hyoscyamus, Kali bromatum,Mercurius solubilis, Phosphorus, Pulsatilla,Stramonium, Sulphur, Tarentula hispanica, andTuberculinum.

    In hyperactive children, Belladonna, Sulphur, Tarentulahispanicaand Tuberculinumare found more effective.

    In aggressive children, Belladonna, Hyoscyamus andTarentula hispanicaare found more effective.

    In dull, backward and shy children Baryta carb., Barytamur., Opium and Pulsatilla are found more effective.

    4. Clinical evaluation ofhomoeopathic medicines inthe management of sicklecell anaemia

    Place(s) of study:

    - Clinical Research Unit(Hom.) at Sambalpur(Orrisa).

    1987 - 2004 Out of 406 cases followed up regularly, 51% casesshowed significant improvement while 32% cases

    showed mild improvement.

    Medicines found effective are Alumina, Arsenic album,Bryonia alba, Ceanothus americanus, Chelidoniummajus, Kalmegh, Lecithinum, Natrum muriaticum,Phosphorus, Pulsatilla nigricans, Rhus toxicodendronand Vanadium metallicum.

    Bryonia albaemerged as the most commonly indicatedmedicine in controlling painful crisis attacks.

    In 45% of cases, Hb % improved from 7-9% to 9-11%.

    10% of the cases which were followed up for 6 yearsdid not develop acute crisis under homoeopathictreatment.

    5. Clinical evaluation ofhomoeopathic medicines inchronic cervicitis and cervical

    erosion

    Place(s) of study:

    - Clinical Research Units(Hom.) at Shimla, Imphal,Varanasi, (U.P.), Tirupathi- Regional Research Institute(Hom.), at New Delhi

    1987 - 2004 Out of 3213 cases followed up, 73% cases showedsignificant improvement while 22% cases showed mildimprovement.

    Medicines found effective are Alumina, Borax,Calcarea carbonicum, Caulophyllum, Hydrastis,Kreosotum, Lachesis, Mercurius solubilis, Natrummuriaticum, Pulsatillaand Sepia.

    Sepia alone emerged as the most frequently indicatedmedicine for cervicitis and cervical erosion.

    Cases that required repeated cauterization for theirerosion got relieved after homoeopathic treatment.

    6. Clinical Evaluationof HomoeopathicMedicines inOsteoarthritis

    Although improvement was observed in 76% of thetreatment group, this was significantly seen in 47% of

    the cases.

    A group of homoeopathic drugs has been identified andfound effective in relieving the symptoms and signs ofosteoarthritis when prescribed as per their indications.

    Most effective medicines are Arnica, Arsenicum album,Bryonia alba, Calcarea carbonica, Calcarea fluoricum,Causticum, Graphites, Lycopodium clavatum,Medorrhinum, Natrum mur., Pulsatilla, Rhustoxicodendronand Sulphur.

    7. Clinical evaluation ofHomoeopathic medicines inUpper Respiratory TractInfections

    Place(s) of study:

    Clinical Research CumEpidemic Cell (Hom.), Bhopal.

    2000 - 2005

    Significant improvement has been observed in 90% ofthe cases of acute rhinitis. Mild improvement was alsoseen in 4% of the cases also.

    A group of fourteen medicines has been identified andfound effective in relieving the signs and symptoms ofacute rhinitis.

    Most frequently indicated and effective medicines areArsenicum album, Justicea adhatoda, Lemna minorandSilicea.

    8. Clinical evaluation ofHomoeopathic Medicines infilariasis

    Place(s) of study:

    - Regional Research Institute(Hom.), Puri, (Orissa)- Regional Research Institute(Hom.), Gudivada, (AndhraPradesh)- Clinical Research Unit(Hom.), Tirupathi, (AndhraPradesh).

    1980 - 2003

    79% of the cases improved in varying degrees andsignificant improvement was achieved in 55% of thecases.

    These 55% cases had complete absence of clinicalevents for a period ranging from 2 to 3 years.

    A group of homoeopathic drugs has been identified andfound effective in relieving the symptoms and signs offilariasis when prescribed as per their indications.

    Most indicated and effective medicines observed areRhus toxicodendron, Bryonia alba, Sulphur, Apis mel.,Natrum muriaticum, Pulsatilla and Rhododendron.

    Homoeopathic medicines could disappear or reduce thegrade I and grade II lymphoedema in 79% of the cases.

    High potencies have been found useful in acute clinicalevents.

    9. Clinical evaluation ofhomoeopathic medicines inthe management of Allergicdermatitis.

    Place(s) of study:

    - Clinical Research Units(Hom.) Gurgaon andPatiala

    1980-2003 The outcome of the study shows that homoeopathicmedicines have effective role in managing Allergic

    dermatitis.

    Seventy five percent of the cases were significantlyimproved, though mild improvement was also seen inother 21% of the cases.

    The most indicated and efficacious medicines observedare Apis mellifica, Bovista, Dulcamara, Graphites,Natrum muriaticum, Petroleum, Rhus toxicodendron,Sepia, Sulphur and Urtica urens.

    The study verified the reliability of symptoms of theprescribed medicines in allergic dermatitis.

    Further study with improvedparameters for diagnosis,

    follow up and outcomeassessment will furtherstrengthen theeffectiveness ofhomoeopathic medicines.

    10. Clinical evaluation ofhomoeopathic medicines inthe management of bronchialasthma.

    - Regional Research Institutes(H) at New Delhi, Gudivada(Andhra Pradesh) and Shimla(Himachal Pradesh)- Clinical Research Units (H)at Udupi (Karnataka)and Patiala (Punjab)

    1978-2003 The homoeopathic medicines have been found to haveeffective role in managing acute attacks as well as incontrolling recurrent attacks of bronchial asthma.

    Sixty four percent of the cases had shown significantimprovement though mild improvement was also seenin other 24% of cases.

    Arsenicum album has been found to be the mostindicated and effective medicine in the treatment ofasthma.

    Other most indicated and effective medicines found areHepar sulphuris, Kali carbonicum, Lycopodiumclavatum, Natrum sulphuricum, Phosphorus andPulsatilla nigricans.

    Viburnum opulus Q has been found effective duringacute attacks of asthma.

    Further study withimproved parameters foroutcome assessment(spirometery, etc.) willfurther strengthen the role

    of homoeopathic medicinesin the management ofbronchial ashma.

    Council completed clinical verification of 52 drugs sinceinception of the project

    Focus was on fragmentarily proved drugs mainly ofindigenous origin.,

    walled fibers arranged in various planes. Seed coat

    inflammatory action, fall in blood pressure & analgesic

    activities but shows antipyretic effect.

    Part used: Root.

    Phellogen indistinct and phelloderm, thin-walled

    followed by a wide zone of cortex of tangentially

    elongated, oval or isodiametric parenchyma cells

    containing numerous starch grains; sclereids solitary or in

    groups. Idioblasts contain brown contents present in

    phelloderm, cortex and xylem parenchyma.

    Physico-chemical

    TLC studies:

    (A) chloroform:methanol (9:1 v/v) as mobile phase.

    (i) Under U.V.lighttwo spots appear at Rf0.54(greenish)

    and 0.97(blue). (ii) On spraying with antimony trichloride in chloroform reagent four spots appear at Rf0.39( pink), 0.51( violet), 0.67(violet),and 0.91(pink).

    (B) n-butanol:acetic acid:n propanol:water(3:1:!:1 v/v) as

    mobile phase.(i) On spraying with ferric cyanide

    (potassium) ferric chloride reagent five blue spots appear

    at Rf0.50, 0.65, 0.76, 0.85 and 0.91.Pharmacology The present study demonstrates that Cochlearia

    armoracia Q is safe up to dose level of 0.15 ml/100g.b.w.

    in mice and has no atrophic/ degenerative changes in anyendocrine glands. The drug does not show any

    antiinflammatory, anti-pyretic, anti-convulsant, C.N.S.

    activity and fall in blood pressure but shows analgesic

    effect.

    Pharmacognosy Part used: Dried bark.Stone cells arranged in concentric tangential bands,

    associated with crystal sheath containing prisms of

    calcium oxalate. Laticiferous ducts containing brownish

    contents present in phloem. Rosettes or prisms of

    calcium oxalate and starch present throughout

    parenchymatous tissue.

    Physico-chemical TLC studies:-

    using chloroform: methanol (9:1v/v) as mobile phase and

    on spraying the plate withDragendorffs reagent sixorange spots appear at Rf0.20, 0.30, 0.65, 0.70, 0.80 and

    0.90.

    Pharmacognosy Part used: Leaf

    Lamina: stomata paracytic occasionally anomocytic, only

    on lower surface; trichomes numerous, multicellular,

    uniseriate, meristele shows crescent shaped, conjoint,bicollateral vascular bundle embedded in parenchymatous

    ground tissue. Rosette aggregates of calcium oxalate

    scattered throughout leaf. Stomatal index: 7-13, palisade

    ratio: 4.25-8. Petiole shows horse-shoe shaped outline

    A) Under U.V.lightfive spots appear at Rf 0.28(red),

    0.47(red),0.57(blue), 0.89(red) and 0.94(red).

    B) On exposure to iodine vapours six spots appear at Rf.

    behavioural effect, respiratory and heart rate at the dose

    level of 1.0 ml/100 g.b.w. in mice and also did notpossess any anti-fertility effect.
