It has been almost two months since the beginning of the COVID -19 pandemic. Hope you have stayed well and have learned to appreciate the simple things of life. Maybe you have reconnected with family, started cooking more at home, played more board games, picked up a new hobby, or have simply gotten more rest. Thanks so much for understanding the changes the Cooperative Extension Service has taken to ensure everyone’s health and safety. We have cancelled all face to face meeting through the month of May as of now. But we are still here to answer questions and assist with your needs and issues. We are just altering the way we meet. Feel free to call the Extension office at any time at 606-845-4641. Or you can email me at [email protected]. In the meantime, join the Facebook group: Fleming County Homemakers to keep connected, enjoy online learning opportunities that are shared and stay healthy and check on your fellow members, family and neighbors. Enjoy the Healthy at Home Calendar! (Included in this newsletter) Sometimes we are so busy taking care of others--parenting, caregiving, teaching, working, volunteering, etc., that we forget about our own needs. The "Healthy at Home" calendar provides daily encouragement to help you take time every day to nurture your mind, body and soul. Healthy lifestyle choices will influence your overall health and well-being, including boosting your immune system, helping you stay more positive, managing stress and anxiety and contributing to better sleep.

HOMEMAKER COUNCIL MEETING NOTES: The Fleming County Homemakers Council held their spring meeting via Zoom. The Annual Meeting that was set for May 8th has been rescheduled for June 26th. This is still tentative due to COVID-19 situation. The theme this year was a Tea Party. Now it will be a” “Quaran-TEA” party. Your club will decorate their own table using the Tea party theme. So start looking for your favorite tea cup to bring with you to the event. Registration fee will be $15.00. More details will follow. This year, it is time to elect a new President and Secretary. If you are willing to serve, please contact the County President, Jennifer Hildebrand. This is a great opportunity to provide leadership to your county. Since you are staying home more, please make sure you are keeping up with your reading list and volunteer hours. These need to be submitted by May 15th. Fleming County Showcase: The council voted to host the Showcase again this year. Due to COVID -19, we will not be offering premiums, like the past. Our businesses are suffering way too much to ask for donations. Ribbons will be awarded in all categories, and possibly top prizes will receive an additional prize. The date has been set for July 30-Aug 1st. Entries will be taken in on Thursday evening and Friday morning. Judging on Friday afternoon and then open to public on Saturday during the Farmer’s Market Customer Appreciation Day event. Note: This year we will hold the County Homemaker Cultural Arts Contest with this event. So the categories will increase. The KEHA Cultural Arts categories are listed in this newsletter.

Thank You: Homemakers and friends have been putting their FCS skills to work since the arrival of COVID-19 pandemic. Whether is it cooking, baking, transporting and most of all working with facemasks. Several of the members have been stitching away, while others have helped by cutting and pressing, and then others who have donated material supplies. You all are making a difference in protecting our loved ones in the community. Over 100 facemasks have been mailed to the University of KY Children’s Hospital. Others have been donated to the Licking Valley Sr. Center program and Grandparent support group. Many more have been donated to health facilities in the county and beyond. Many have probably been made and given to family members and friends. This is the time, the Homemaker’s organization can shine. Because helping is what we do best. Thanks again for your time, energy and supplies.

CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies) especially in areas of significant community-based transmission. Cloth face coverings can be made from household items or made at home from common materials at low cost. You can make your own masks by going to this link for instructions:
