Moving? Are the kids ready for it?

It's quite normal for children to feel like theydon't have any control and that they werenever part of this big decision. So to ensureyour kids feel like they're involved and part ofthis big life-changing event, try the followingtips and tricks.

Preparing to Move

- First, make sure your children know that theycan ask you any question and you'll give theman honest answer. Most kids want to knowabout their new school, neighborhood, sportteams and city. But they may also havequestions you hadn't thought of, such as, "howhard is it to make friends?"; "Are we taking ourdog?"; "Why are we moving?". Answer everyquestion your child has with as many details asyou can provide. Being honest and open willhelp your child feel confident in this decision tomove. You may want to ask your child to writedown their questions as they think of them,then call a family meeting to discuss eachperson's questions. Family meetings are agreat way to open up a dialogue between youand your children.

- Give your child a plan for their room. Provid-ing your child with as much information as youcan about the new house will help them makesome decisions before hand, such as where toplace furniture and what color to paint theirwalls. Encourage them to make cut-outs ofeverything in their room so they can rearrangethings before move day.

- Encourage your child to create an addressbook where addresses of friends, teachers,coaches, etc... can be kept. Encourage your

child to stay in touch, and assure them thattheir friends are just a mouse-click or postagestamp away.

Helping Children Move During the SchoolYear

Talk to teachers and school administrators inadvance of the move. School administratorswill be the first to tell you that it's important forthe school to be notified of your child's arrival,any special needs your child may have and ifthere were any problems at the old school. Youmay also want to discuss how your child feelsabout the move, if your child is shy oracademic challenges you're concerned about.Remember, teachers and staff are there to helpyou with the transition. The more you're willingto share, the easier you'll make it for your childto succeed.

While the list above speaks more to yourconcerns, it's also equally important to pointout your child's strengths, their passions andwhat they might miss about their old school.For instance, if your child played in the schoolband, and the new school doesn't have a bandprogram, you may ask the staff what thecommunity offers or if they have other sugges-tions on how you can keep your child engaged.It's critical that things your child loved to doin the old school be transferred to the newcommunity.
