With a large variety of rug styles, shapes and sizesavailable, finding the right one for your bedroommight seem intimidating at first. Here are someideas to help you narrow down your choices.

1. Location: The first step to figuring out whichsize of area rug to buy is deciding where you wantto put it, in other words, how you want to break upthe space in your bedroom. For small bedroomswhere not much else fits aside from a bed, a largerug for the area beneath and around the bed looksbest. For larger bedrooms where there is space fora seating area, desk or vanity table, area rugs candefine those spaces nicely. For example, place alarge round rug underneath two stuffed armchairswith a reading lamp and table placed betweenthem or place a square rug underneath your deskand chair. You can either place a large rug underthe bed area or you can place small rugs of anyshape at the foot or sides of the bed.

2. Size: Once you've decided where you will placethe area rug, measure the length and width of thespace and write it down. If you decide to get a rugfor the space beneath and around your bed, meas-ure not only the size of the bed but any additionallength and width you need to extend around thebed. For example, if you have nightstands or otherfurniture at the sides of the bed, you might want arug that is big enough to cover the entire area ofthe bed and nightstands plus enough to border thefoot of the bed.

3. Colour and pattern: Now that you know whatsize and shape of bedroom rug you're looking for,choosing the perfect area rug is just a matter ofpersonal taste and style. Take a look at the coloursand styles your room already has. Are there a lotof solid colours or neutrals? If so, a rug with apattern or a little bit more colour will add just theright amount of interest. If your bedroom alreadyhas a lot of colour and busy patterns, a solidcolour bedroom rug or a simple pattern will lookbetter. If you're redecorating your entire bedroom,let a new area rug be the inspiration for yourdesign. Working from the ground up, you canhandpick your wall colour, sheets, duvet coverand all the decorative accessories to matchthe colours and pattern in the rug for a designer-coordinated look.

4. Price and quality: The most inexpensive arearugs are machine-made using cotton or syntheticmaterials, while the most expensive rugs arehandmade using the finest quality natural materi-als, like wool and silk. Before you choose yourmaterials, consider the location. A hand-wovensilk rug is not the best choice for a high-trafficarea, but it may look wonderful as a wall hanging.If the rug will be the centrepiece of your bedroom,you may want to spend a little more for higherquality materials.
