Creating a Focal PointThe phrase, “You’ve got to start somewhere,” can refer to a lot of different things, butwhen you are talking about good room design, it can only mean one thing- Focal Point.

Have you walked into a room and found it somewhat cold &

drab, and uninviting? It’s a brand new year and a perfect time

for you to take a fresh look at your home and choose a focal

point for every room.

Why choose a focal point for every room?

If you've ever been confused as to why a room that has nice

furniture and collectables that you love just isn't working for you,

chances are it doesn't have a focal point.

A focal point is a feature of a room that instantly grabs your

attention and is the object around which the rest of the room's

design revolves. The focal point is the first thing you see when

entering a room and its job is to anchor the space. If possible, build

your furniture arrangement around the focal point. When you don’t

have something to anchor your space, then there is no place for the

eye to rest when entering the room. Without a place for your eyes

to rest, the room will feel very disjointed and uncomfortable.

Choosing a Focal Point

Oftentimes the best focal points are the architectural elements of

the house such as a fireplace or bank of windows, but if you don’t

have an architectural focal point, then you need to create one. This

can be done with a large piece of furniture or a display of art.

Because focal points have visual weight, other items in your room

need to be placed so that they balance that weight. Each room

should have only one focal point, but it can have other areas of

interest or emphasis. If you have an architectural point of interest

on one wall, such as a fireplace, and have a contrived point of

interest on an opposite wall, such as a large entertainment center or

projection television, it is best to create two separate seating areas,

each with their own “focal point”.

Another thing to consider in good room design is the facing wall.

This may or may not be the wall on which the focal point is

located. The facing wall is the wall opposite the entry into the

room. Because it is seen first, it makes a good location for a

contrived focal point, but in rooms with architectural or natural

focal points, it should be treated as a point of emphasis. It is

important that this wall create interest and excitement, after all,

first impressions of your room shouldn’t be boring.

Below are common focal points used in each area of the house.

While every home is different, consider these to help establish focal

points in your rooms.

Living Room or Family Room

The living or family rooms

typically have several options

for a focal point, with a

fireplace or television being

first pick. Many homes

combine the two. For example,

a fireplace with built-in space

for the television above it or

with flanking shelves that

holds books or decorative

items on one side and the

television and other electronic

equipment on the other side.

This arrangement is especially

common in newer homes

where built-in shelves are pre-

wired for such use. If you've

identified a mantle or shelf as

the focal point, use plants and

accessories to decorate them.

If you are a lucky owner of a house with architectural features here

is what you can do to highlight their beauty:

The fireplace is one of the most striking features and should

definitely be the focal point if you’ve got one. If it’s an old fire-

place, it could be painted, or tiled to give it a new life. The mantel

is a great place to accessorize – a large piece of art or a mirror could

be added above for some punch and smaller accessories arranged

on the mantel to tie in the fireplace with the art or mirror. Having

a TV in the same room as the fireplace used to be a problem, but

not anymore, as more and more people are investing in a plasma

screen TVs, it should be mounted above the mantel and will not

fight with the focal point of the fireplace. Mounting it above the

fireplace is really the perfect spot for it, since when it’s on, you

will have a cozy seating arrangement around the fireplace and can

enjoy both at the same time, and when it’s off it disappears almost

seamlessly into the background; especially if there are a couple of

accessories on the mantel that add visual interest. Remember

though, that less is more and try to avoid creating visual clutter.

Another common focal point in the living or family room is a bank

of windows. This works particularly well when you have a great

view. If an outdoor view is the focal point, orient the furniture

inside and outside to take advantage of window areas. Hang

decorative window treatments to frame the view without distract-

ing from it and arrange your seating to enjoy the scenery. Place a

large piece of furniture on the wall opposite the expanse of

windows to help balance the room.

You can create a focal point wall by painting one wall a different

color from the rest and accessorizing with a wall arrangement,

artwork, or display shelves. Use lighting to enhance your focal

point. For example, use a picture light or track light on a painting

or wall display.

If you are lacking a fireplace, built-in shelves or a great view as a

focal point, there are still plenty of other options. Use contrasting

color to make the focal point stand out. For example, use a light

wall color behind a dark wood armoire or a large painting or wall

of art can work well as a focal point. Basically anything that is

substantial enough to grab and hold your attention when you enter

a space is ideal.
