NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Ten-nessee officials are asking the pub-lic to pick their favorite of four redesign options for new license plates that will be available start-ing in January.

Gov. Bill Lee’s office says voting began Monday and runs through Sept. 27 at tn.gov/ratetheplates.

The new design will replace the current plate that launched in 2006, with modifications in 2011, 2016 and 2017.

State law includes a redesign

every eight years if lawmakers ap-

prove funding for it.

Tennessee law also requires the

words “Tennessee,” “Volunteer

State” and “TNvacation.com” to be

on the plate, and lets Tennesseans

pick an “In God We Trust” option.

The winning design of the pri-

marily white and blue options will

be announced in the fall.

Now is the ideal time of planting winter annual cool-season grasses such as wheat, ryegrass, oats, and cereal rye. These forages are very high quality and can produce ex-cellent gains in young live-stock. They are particularly good for providing the nutri-tion needed for lactation and quick rebreed after calving by beef cows. They provide forage mainly on the back side of winter prior to the spring flush of tall fescue and orchardgrass.

First, determine what kind of winter annual grass is best suited to your location. For our area, the most com-mon winter annuals used are wheat and annual ryegrass.

Wheat is tolerant of heavy, wet soils. Annual ryegrass is tolerant of moderate soil acidity and close, continuous grazing. Both of these spe-cies can be planted with clo-ver with good results. They should be planted prior to November 1.

Second, take a soil sample and determine the fertility needs in the field you wish to establish the winter annual grass. To take a good quality soil sample, take at least 15 soil cores in an area no big-ger than 40 acres. Soil cores need to be at least four inches deep. Mix the cores well in a bucket and place in a soil box. Phosphorus, potassium and lime requirements can only be determined by a soil test. Nitrogen requirements are made according to produc-

tion goals. If for just grazing, less nitrogen may be applied than if you are planning to graze and make hay. A basic recommendation would be to apply 30 lbs actual nitrogen per acre at planting, 30 – 45 lbs/acre in early March and another 30 – 45 lbs/acre in late April.

Next, prepare a good seed-bed. The seedbed could be a conventional planting, mini-mum till, or no-till. Stand establishment is quicker and production greater with a clean, firm weed-free con-ventional planting but is the most expensive method. If broadcasting or drilling in-to warm season grass sods, preparation consists of mow-ing, haying, or grazing grass short and/or burning down with an herbicide maybe fol-

lowed by a light disking prior to seeding.

Fourth, select a planting method and use the correct seeding rate. Drilling and broadcasting are the two most common methods for planting. Drilling has the ad-vantage of improved plant spacing, lower seeding rates, better seed contact and prop-er seeding depth. The disad-vantage is the planting time is slower and more invest-ment in equipment. Broad-casting requires that seed is spread over the ground and incorporated either by light disking, culti-packing or a drag. Broadcasting has the advantage of faster planting speed, lower equipment cost, and the ability to spread fer-tilizer. It will require a higher seeding rate, lack of depth

control, and a higher risk of stand failure. For wheat and annual ryegrass, plant seed at 2 – 3 bushels/acre for wheat and 15 to 25 lbs/acre for annual ryegrass. Use the higher rate for broadcasting. Plant no deeper than ½ inch.

Lastly, select a good variety that is adapted to your area. Try to select one that has produced well over several years and/or locations accord-ing to university trials. This information on cool-season winter annuals can be found at utbeef.com. Use good qual-ity certified seed to reduce the risk of stand failure. Fol-lowing these tips and with a little rain should allow a good chance for productive winter annual grass pasture.

Tennessee polls public on license plate redesign options

Few events underline the sense of community in Marshall County like high school home-

comings, with their related festivities, courts, and parades. Last Friday, thousands lined

the streets of Cornersville and Chapel Hill, taking advantage of the cool fall weather

and the opportunity to support the youngsters and the schools which form the heart

of their communities. Both schools responded with heart on Friday night with Forrest

rolling over Summertown 33 to 7 and Cornersville shutting out Collinwood, 21 to 0.

Marshall County High School will celebrate homecoming later in the year. Photos from

the parades and full coverage of the homecoming games can be found in today’s Marshall

County Tribune

“But after that the kindness and

love of God our Savior toward man

appeared, Not by works of righteous-

ness which we have done, but accord-

ing to His mercy He saved us…” Titus

3:4,5

Lifeguards place themselves in dan-ger while saving others in danger. For that we are thankful, especially if you were the one rescued from drowning. Along with that, have you ever noticed that we never hear a rescued person say, “I let the lifeguard save me” or “I chose to accept the lifeguard?” Such statements would be the height of ar-rogance, not to mention that it would demean and dishonor the one who risked their life in the waters to save them. Yet so many professing Chris-

tians talk like that about how they were saved.

Ask a professing believer, “How did you become a Christian?” Then take notice of the first thing they say. Many times they say, “I”-“I gave my heart to God. I wanted to change my life. I began reading the Bible. I prayed a prayer. I started going to church. I made my decision for Jesus.” Have you ever noticed that in the Bi-ble, no disciple, no apostle, no prophet ever used that kind of language about salvation? Someone may ask, “What about our belief and faith?” Modern Christianity, like Israel of old, drifts away from God’s word and gets the cart before the horse. Our belief, our faith, and our trust in Christ are re-sponsive to God’s Spirit first making

us alive in Christ (Ephesians 2:1,5). Once we have been made spiritually alive in Christ, (also called regen-eration or born again), then our belief and faith follows. This truth is seen in the creation of Adam. It was God who first breathed into man’s nostrils the breath of life (Genesis 2:7). Do you realize that Adam could have never exhaled if it were not for God first breathing into his nostrils the breath of life? That is the same way with our belief, our faith, and our trust in God. God must first come to us and breathe that spiritual life into us - then we exhale belief, faith, and trust as the response that follows. Why is this so important? It is vitally important because in our opening verses Paul makes it very clear that

God gets all the glory for our salva-

tion by the statement “He saved us.”

This is the heart of the gospel mes-

sage. In those three words you have

the core of the Christian faith. Our

salvation is all about “Who God is”

and not about “who we are.” It is clear,

we cannot save ourselves, nor do we

participate in our salvation. It cannot

be overstated, “He saved us.” From

beginning to end, salvation is totally

a work of God in Christ. Christ is

the Author and Finisher of our faith

(Hebrews 12:2). So let’s not dishonor

our Heavenly Lifeguard, and may our

answer be to the question, “How were

we saved?” be, “He saved me!”

Thursday, September 23, 2021 - Marshall County Tribune - B1SportsSportsTigers back on track after thumping HillwoodBy Chris [email protected]

NASHVILLE — After falling to Tullahoma in Week 4 of the 2021 season, the Marshall County Tigers (4-1, 2-1) responded in a big way, thumping Hillwood (0-4, 0-1)on the road to bounce back in the win col-umn, 55-0.

Quarterback Devonte Davis was as efficient as possible, completing all nine of his pass attempts for 214 yards and two touch-downs.

He carried the ball three times for 25 yards and a rushing touchdown as well.

His two passing touch-downs both went to Jayden Hart for 48 and 65 yards.

The Tigers wasted no time, with Davis scoring the game’s first touchdown on a 12-yard run.

Barely three minutes later, Davis connected with Hart for the 48-yard strike, before Demari Braden scored on a four-yard carry in the final minute of the opening frame.

The Tigers found pay dirt two more times in the half, once on Davis’ 65-yard bomb to Hart and a final first-half score on a 10-yard carry by Trice Gordon.

Kicker Wyatt Joyce con-nected on 4-of-5 extra point attempts and the Tigers led 34-0 at the half.

With command of the

game well in-hand, the Tigers were able to work the reserves on the field in the second half and there was virtually no let down by the Marshall County offense.

Braden scored his sec-ond touchdown of the night early in the third frame on a five-yard carry.

The Tigers scored two more times in the fourth quarter, the first of which came on a two-yard pass from Trey Warner to Markese Davis and a final touchdown by Kamariq Perryman.

Jorge Campuzano and Thomas Beech also were perfect on their extra point attempts as well.

Hart was the top produc-er in the Tiger pass game, hauling in two catches for 113 yards and a pair of scores.

Markese Davis added four catches for 49 yards and a score as well.

In total, the Tigers churned out 194 yards on the ground and were led by Trice Gordon’s eight carries for 65 yards.

Braden added 57 yards on eight touches as well.

As a passing unit, three Tigers combined to com-plete 13-of-15 tries for 250 yards.

In total, Marshall County totaled 444 yards of offense.

Defensively, the Tigers

were a terror for the Hilltoppers.

As a team, Marshall County combined for eight tackles for loss and were led by Grayson Miller and Jakavan Curry, who each had six tackles.

The Tigers also won the turnover battle, recording two intercep-tions by Khamani Ewing and Marquay Allen and a

Rockets run wild past Summertown on HomecomingBy Anthony S. PucaSports Writer

CHAPEL HILL — The margin of victory was unexpected, but welcomed as the Forrest Rockets easily handled Summertown 33-7 in a Region 5-AA matchup at the Murrey E. Holton Memorial Field in Cha-pel Hill in Friday night’s homecoming game.

“Summertown is a good team, but our kids just came out ready to play,” Forrest coach Eli Stephenson said. “They came ready to play in all three phases of the game, we got a score in all three phases of the game and that got us the momentum and we didn’t let up.”

The Rockets ran roughshod over the Eagles in the ground game, rushing the rock 39 times for 268 yards and three touchdowns.

“All of our running backs played great to-night. We were wearing down in the beginning of the game and in the second half we hit some big plays and scored and that was huge for us,” Stephenson said.

Senior McCalis-ter Wilson opened the scoring with a 53-yard touchdown jaunt three plays into the contest and Tayton Swift scored on a one-yard run in the third quarter before Liam Bell closed the scoring with a 31-yard touchdown with just over five minutes to play in the third period.

The Rockets won the turnover battle 3-1 with Swift coming up with a first quarter intercep-tion. The junior recov-ered a Summertown fumble on the second half kickoff and then ran the ball into the end zone three plays later.

“We definitely didn’t have all the confidence in the world to come out and beat them by 26 points. It’s been a close game the last few years now,” Swift said. “I have to give it up to our defensive coor-dinator, coach (Ryan) Bridges. He really did an amazing job of game planning this one.”

Wilson also came up with two big defensive plays that turned into nine points, a forced

fumble that was scooped up by Davis for a second quarter touchdown and a blocked punt in the third quarter that re-sulted in a safety, giving the Rockets a 26-7 lead.

“We scored in every aspect of the game. We had a blast and I think that is what made it so good,” Wilson said. “The intensity was amazing. We are always compet-ing with each other to see who can do better, so that makes it fun.”

Forrest won the coin toss and Swift came up with a nice return near the midfield stripe be-fore the Rockets needed just three plays to score with Wilson taking a third down handoff on a scissors play and racing 63 yards for a touch-down.

Gavin Grissom nailed the first of his four suc-cessful extra points and the Rockets took a lead they would not surren-der.

Swift ruined the Eagles’ opening drive when he came up with an interception on a fourth down pass and the Rockets drove to the Summertown 17-yard line where they had to settle for a Grissom 33-yard field goal to make it 10-0 with 7:32 remaining in the first quarter.

Summertown fought back as they put to-gether a 79-yard drive that culminated in a one-yard quarterback keeper by Colton Schaf-fer for a touchdown.

After the ensuing kickoff, the Rockets fumbled the ball away at their own 29-yard line where the Eagles shot themselves in the foot with two consecu-tive false start penalties before Wilson shot into the backfield on a pitch play and drilled the Summertown ball car-rier, who fumbled the ball that was scooped by Davis for a backbreak-ing touchdown.

Summertown went three-and-out on its next offensive posses-sion and the Rockets could not put any points on the board and led 17-7 at the half.

The turnover bug bit the Eagles again as they fumbled the second half kickoff that Swift

recovered and three plays later he was in the end zone on a four-yard run.

Summertown began its next drive at their own 14-yard line after a block in the back on the kickoff and the Forrest defense dug in, forcing a three-and-out and an Eagles’ punt.

Wilson busted through the line and blocked the kick that caromed into the end for a safety, giv-ing the Rockets a three-score lead at 26-7 with eight minutes remain-ing in the third quarter.

Forrest took the punt after a safety at their own 45-yard line and a second down pass from Hunter Bennett to Tyler Ayers moved the ball into Summertown terri-tory where the Rockets went Wildcat with Swift behind center.

Swift took off on a nice run to the 31-yard line and two plays later, Bell took a handoff on a trap play and found an opening to cut outside and race to the pylon for a touchdown.

Grissom’s boot was true and the Rockets led 33-7 with 5:25 remain-ing in the third quarter.

Summertown went three-and-out quickly and the Rockets began the process of burning time off the clock with the Eagles not getting the ball back until the nine mark of the fourth quarter.

The Eagles failed to get any offense going and the Rockets re-

CHAPEL HILL — Following a brief start to the District 9A-AA golf match on Monday morning at Henry Horton Golf Course, players were instructed to return to the clubhouse after torrential rains doused the course.

Following an approxi-mate two-hour rain delay, the match was shortened from the planned 18-hole match to just nine holes.

In the end, the Forrest

Rockets took second over-all as a team to continue their season, while the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs also took second.

Both teams will advance to the upcoming Region 5-A tournament, which will be held on Monday at Henry Horton.

Lady Rocket golfer Maggie Browning also earned a trip to the region match as an individual qualifier as well.

Two-time defending state champion Evan Woosley-Reed of Cascade won the

match with a 35 score, while Tatyana Greene won the girls’ match with a final score of 44.

Sebastian Thompson posted the lowest score for the Rockets and finished with a 44 overall, good enough for a third-place finish in the individual standings.

Homecoming sweet for FMS RocketsBy Anthony S. PucaSports Writer

The Forrest Middle School Rockets (4-0) have been like a screaming loco-motive with no brakes all season and they continued to roll on Thursday, demol-ishing Cannon County 66-6 on homecoming night at the Murrey E. Holton Field in Chapel Hill.

“This group, they amaze me every week,” FMS coach Tony Johnson said. “I feel like when we win big one week, I’m always nervous we will come in the next week and not live up to the week before, but every single week this season they have raised the bar. It’s just simply amazing.”

The Rockets scored the first eight times they had the ball on offense and they never threw a pass except on two point conversion tries.

“That’s our mentality. We want to step on the gas, get on them early and then just keep on hammering it down and break their will, no matter who the opponent is,” Johnson said.

FMS rushed the rock 16 times for 332 yards for a gaudy 20.8 yards per carry with seventh-grader Jacob Tincher leading the way with two touches for 92 yards.

Tincher busted two long second half touchdown runs of 49 and 43 yards.

Eli Bell had three carries for 72 yards and a touch-down, Antonio Marable rushed five times for 59 yards and a score, while Cohen Grissom had two rushes for 49 yards (scoring both times). Fletcher Fields had three carries for 43 and a touchdown, and Maddox Puca had one carry for 17 yards.

“Every running back that touched the ball tonight did an amazing job,” Johnson said. “From our first-string guys who have been getting a lot of reps all year, to the guys who have gotten little to no reps at all.”

“We have got a lot of speed and we hit the hole hard, so I can’t ask any more out of that group. They are a great group to coach.”

The Forrest defense completely shut down the Lions’ offense, especially in the first half as the Rockets did not allow a first down or a gain of more than six yards.

The Lions ended up with just 84 total yards and their only touchdown came on a Brayden Smithson three-yard run with 7:46 remain-ing in the contest.

“Our offense is impres-sive, but our defense a lot of times is even more impres-sive,” Johnson said. “We get after it. We attack. We don’t let them have any breathing room and we don’t let them get their blocks because we are on them right away.”

FMS won the opening coin toss and Clayson Jones covered a short kickoff at midfield.

Two snaps in to the game, Bell took it to the house from 41 yards out and Ryan Hill passed to Grissom for the two-point conversion.

Grissom boomed the ensuing kickoff and the Lions started at their own nine-yard line where a first down pass lost four yards.

The next snap went over the quarterback’s head and he scrambled for the ball in the end zone where Houston Matlock got there first and then many more Rocket defenders followed for the safety.

The ensuing kick back to the Rockets following the safety was a bad one, giv-ing the ball to FMS at the 33-yard lin.

Two plays later, Fields scored and the Hill threw to Fields for two more points and FMS led 18-0.

The Lions went three-and-out again and the punt was popped up, coming down at the Cannon County 17-yard line where Grissom scored on the next play and Hill followed with the two-

point run to make 26-0 with 2:12 remaining in the first quarter.

Grissom pinned the Lions deep again and the FMS defense held once more.

The Rockets started their next drive at the Lions’ 44-yard line where Marable ran it in on first down and Hill passed to Fields for two more points, making it 34-0.

The Lions went back-wards on their next offensive possession, facing a fourth-and-30 at their own 10-yard line where they punted the ball back to FMS, who started at the 32-yard line with 5:12 remaining in the first half.

Forrest scored on the next play with Grissom run-ning it in for the touchdown and Hill found Bell on the two-point pass.

The Lions went three-and-out again and Hill returned the punt 38 yards to the Cannon County one-yard line yard where Fields busted in for the touchdown and the two-point run by Grissom gave FMS a 50-0 lead.

resulted in a Forrest safety, making it 52-0 at the half.

FMS played its second string in the second half and Tincher added his two long touchdown runs for the Rockets, while the Lions finally got on the board.

With the win, the Rockets clinched the reg-ular season Duck River Valley Conference title and will host the DRVC title game on September 30.

FMS hosts the Community Vikings on Thursday in the regular season finale.

“Next week at practice we will be practicing for Community, but we will also be preparing for who-ever we are going to see in that championship,” Johnson said. “We want to make sure we secure that

win this week and finish out the regular season unde-feated and then be ready to have a big home crowd here for the championship.”

tained the ball before giving it back on downs with just under two and half minutes to play in the game.

“We came out phenom-enal tonight. We knew what we were doing and despite homecom-ing this week, we came out focused and ready to play,” senior linebacker Layne Strasser said. “We smacked them in the mouth the first play of the game. We had that safety on defense and those things crush them to where they get tired and they get worn down and they don’t want to fight anymore eventually.”

“We didn’t expect to come out here and win by 26 points. I figured it was going to be a close tight came, but we came out here and played to-night.”

The eighth-ranked Rockets (4-1, 2-0) make the long trek to Jas-per Friday night for a non-region 2A matchup with longtime nemesis Marion County.

“I think we will pre-pare well for them. They run a simple offense and a simple defense and I think our defensive coordinator will give us a really good look,” Swift said. “We are re-ally stepping it up each week and I think we can go out and beat them.”

The sixth-ranked War-riors (3-0, 1-0) came off a two-week layoff last Friday night and trav-eled to Bledsoe County where they came away with an easy 31-10 win.

Friday night’s game will be the fourth matchup between the two schools with the Warriors winning all three previous games in season ending playoff wins at Forrest in 2009 (20-17), 2015 (38-10), and 2016 (55-14).

“They (Marion Coun-ty) have great tradi-tion. They are some big guys and they want to run the ball and play physical,” Stephenson said. “We want to do the same thing, so it will be a great test for us.”

How creativity and crafting can bring families together

Thursday, September 23, 2021 – Marshall County Tribune – B5

(StatePoint) The benefits of fam-

ily quality time, which include positive impacts on mental health, re-duced stress, promoting adaptability and more, are well understood. But the importance of cre-ativity in families is less common knowledge.

According to a recent online study conducted by Ipsos, adults who participate in creative activities are more likely to describe them-selves as optimistic, happy, passionate and joyful. But though art and creativity are vital for child development -- helping develop fine

and gross motor skills, problem-solving abili-ties and even improv-ing emotional wellness, according to education experts -- they’re not al-ways a focus in schools. According to the Ip-sos study, seven in 10 parents feel as though standardized test scores are prioritized more than creative thinking in school.

In a world where fam-ilies juggle work, school and other responsibili-ties, it’s important to find ways to unwind and to create joyful mo-ments that get children and adults off the couch, away from screens and

developing habits of lifelong learning. The Ipsos study found that 75% of parents want their child(ren) to have more opportunities to be creative than they did when they were young, and two-thirds of adults admitted they wish they got to use their creativ-ity more in life.

The good news is fam-ilies can get creative right at home by seek-ing out opportunities for cross-generational learning. Grandparents can pass down their hob-bies and crafts. Parents can teach children the traditions that make up their heritage. Whether

it’s knitting, crocheting, cooking or woodwork-ing, such hobbies are of-ten specific to a family’s culture and are precious to keep in practice.

If this is not an op-tion, no worries. Online services can help your family get creative. For example, Craftsy, the premiere digital desti-nation for creatives, is revolutionizing the way people tap into their potential and engage with lifestyle passions. The site can guide and encourage your family to create meaningful, creative experiences together, allowing you to set up ongoing craft projects to do with your kids, such as decorat-ing cupcakes, sewing

a cozy pillow or learn-ing to draw something new. Even families and friends who live apart can spark creativity and learn together from the comfort of their homes. Families and friends will soon be able to share their member-ship with loved ones to unlock unlimited access to over 1,500 courses, many of which are now also available in Span-ish. From beginner to advanced, the site of-fers content and com-munity for families and individuals of all ages in more than 20 cat-egories. Piggly Wiggly, Sole Owner Stores and the Green Bay Packers

By Bill CareyTennessee History for Kids

The rise and fall of Memphis busi-nessman Clarence Saunders involves Piggly Wiggly, the Pink Palace, the New York Stock Exchange, Sole Own-er Stores and (as a footnote) the Green Bay Packers. It’s hard to tell fact from fiction.

Saunders learned the grocery busi-ness as a young man in Clarksville in the early twentieth century. He moved to Memphis and, in 1916, opened his first Piggly Wiggly store, changing the face of grocery stores in the process.

At the time most grocery stores were owner operated. Customers would walk in the door and give their lists to a clerk, who would re-trieve their items. If the clerk had six people waiting, the customer had to wait for those ahead of them in line to be served. Additionally, most gro-cery stores extended credit to their customers.

Saunders set up his store to be com-pletely different. Each store was iden-tical, with each product in the same location in each store. The stores had one-way aisles to expedite traffic. Pig-gly Wiggly advertised heavily, much more so than any mom-and-pop gro-cer could possibly do. And the stores operated on a “cash only” basis. “Your dollar at Piggly Wiggly will not help pay the BAD DEBTS of others,” one Tennessean ad said.

And from where did Saunders get the name? “It took me two hours to find a name that was ridiculous enough,” he later said.

As his chain and wealth grew, Saunders developed a reputation of flamboyancy in Memphis. He built a massive mansion of pink Geor-gian marble, appropriately named the Pink Palace.

Customers flocked to Saunders’ stores, and he took his company pub-lic within a couple of years after its founding. By 1922 there were 1,200 Piggly Wiggly locations in the U.S., about half owned by the company and the other half by franchisees.

However, in 1923 Saunders lost control over Piggly Wiggly after a

complicated series of events involv-ing ownership of the company’s stock. Although the explanation of what occurred is very complicated, here is a brief summary: Saunders borrowed millions of dollars in an attempt to buy control of his own stock. But on Wall Street, his plot backfired, and Saunders went from wealthy to destitute overnight. In a final effort to retain control over his company, Saunders and Tennessee Governor Austin Peay went to Detroit to ask Ford Motor Co. founder Henry Ford to intercede. Ford refused to meet with the two men from Tennessee (which gives you some idea of how important Henry Ford was at that time).

Piggly Wiggly stores remained open, but no longer under Saunders’ management. For a while, the grocery store chain was led by a Nashville man named James Bradford (who later started a Nashville brokerage house called J. C. Bradford & Co.)

Saunders did not quit, and later started another grocery store chain called (oddly enough) Clarence Saun-ders: Sole Owner of My Name. (Saun-ders apparently got the name because a bankruptcy judge once admonished him by saying “You, sir, own nothing. You are only the sole owner of your name.”) Sanders ran his Sole Owner stores—as they were known—quite aggressively. In fact, he had a ten-dency to build them right across the street from Piggly Wiggly stores.

To promote his grocery store chain, Saunders even organized a profes-sional football team known as the Sole Owner Tigers. On December 15, 1929, a week afternwinning the NFL championship, the Green Bay Packers lost to the Sole Owner Tigers, 20-6.

The Sole Owner chain closed during the Great Depression. Today there are still Piggly Wiggly stores throughout the South, franchised to independent owner-operators under a myriad of arrangements. Meanwhile Saunders’ former mansion, the Pink Palace, is a museum. Among its many exhibits is a replica of a Piggly Wiggly store.

A host of Bulldogs, led by Tyler Brockman (48) converge to make a tackle against the Trojans.

Bulldogs back on track with Homecoming victoryBy Dennis Holley For the Tribune

CORNERSVILLE —

The Cornersville Bulldogs

(4-1, 1-0), needing to get

back on track after the

loss to Clay County last

Friday night, welcomed the

Collinwood Trojans (0-4,

0-1) for a Region 5-1A

contest on a cloudy, humid

evening with brief showers

to celebrate Homecoming

2021.

The Bulldogs, despite

a lackluster and penalty-

plagued game on the offen-

sive side of the ball, turned

back the Trojans 21-0 as the

Cornersville defense stood

their ground.

Coach Gerard Randolph

said, “We put (defen-

sive) pressure on the

(Collinwood) quarterback,

made him scramble. Our

defense stood up to the call

and we put some points on

the board which allowed us

to be even more aggressive

on defense. We have some

things to fix on offense

and if we do, we can play

Cornersville football and

be successful.”

Quarterback Caden

White added, “Our offense

did not execute like we

should have. I and the team

have some work to do to get

better.”

Bulldog offensive/defen-

sive lineman Blake Jones

said, “Defensively we stood

up and played good. We

had the young guys like,

(Jonathan) Zuniga and

(Wesley) Pigg step up for

us.”

Cornersville’s defense,

led by Rhett Woodard and

the emergence of lineback-

er Wesley Pigg, punished

the Trojan runners and

harassed the quarterback

into hurried throws.

The defense also had a

hand in all three scores for

the Bulldogs – an intercep-

tion by Tyler Brockman at

mid-field, a fumble recov-

ery at the Trojans 27-yard

line by Pigg and a bad snap

to the Collinwood quarter-

back that was recovered

by Barret Powers at the

Collinwood 13-yard line.

The Cornersville offense

in all three cases scored.

For the rest of the game, the

Bulldog defense kept the

Trojans pinned down and,

with hard hits, sprawled on

the ground.

The Bulldogs won the

coin toss but deferred to the

second half.

Cornersville’s defense.

showing toughness early

on, made the Trojans go

three and out, taking over

after the punt at their own

48-yard line.

The Bulldog offense

began a pattern that held

true the entire game - pen-

alties destroying continuity

needed for the possession to

be successful.

Running back Cason

Warner said, “On offense

we should have started out

a little bit faster. We picked

it up in the second half.

If we can get our offense

going like our defense, we

will be all right.”

The Bulldogs, for the

game, had 10 possessions,

with eight of those posses-

sions hampered by penal-

ties of some sort.

These penalties wiped

away a five-yard touchdown

run by Warner and later, a

45-yard highlight reel dash

by Ben Franklin.

The Bulldogs got on the

board after Brockman’s

interception at midfield

with the punishing running

of Warner. Quarterback

Blaine Woodard found

Mason Calahan open down

the right side for a 16-yard

TD and with Warner run-

ning the two-point conver-

sion into the end zone, at

the 10:20 mark of the sec-

ond quarter the Bulldogs

led 8-0.

This score would hold

up until the halftime horn

sounded and raindrops

began to bring out rain-

coats and umbrellas in the

stands.

The Bulldogs received

the second half kick-off

with Warner taking the ball

to the Bulldog 35-yard line.

From there, courtesy

of a holding call against

Cornersville, the Bulldogs

faced a third and 17, which

netted a five-yard gain and

a Brockman punt on fourth

down.

Brockman’s punt went to

the Trojan 31-yard line, but

an unsportsmanlike conduct

penalty pushed Collinwood

back to its 16-yard line.

Seven plays later Pigg

recovered a Trojan fumble

and the Bulldogs were in

business at the Collinwood

36-yard line.

Six plays later on fourth

down at the Collinwood

five-yard line, Warner rum-

bled in for the score but a

block in the back negated

the score.

Then, White found wide-

out Eli Welch between

the cornerback and safety,

zipped the ball in and Welch

snatched it out of the air and

raced untouched into the

end zone and even though

the kick after missed, the

Bulldogs led 14-0.

The Bulldogs, with

Pigg making plays and his

teammates hammering

Collinwood, were ready

when, on second and nine, a

bad snap to the Trojan quar-

terback resulted in a fumble

recovered by Powers.

Franklin, on first down,

ran around the left side for a

13-yard touchdown. Logan

Springer drilled the PAT

and with 1:13 left in the

third quarter the Bulldogs

led 21-0.

The Bulldogs defense,

for the rest of the game,

kept hammering the Trojan

offense, highlighted by a

last defensive stand.

After a Trojan inter-

ception at the Bulldogs

25-yard line, Cornersville

was deemed guilty of a

block in the back penalty

that moved the ball to the

Bulldog 10-yard line.

But the Bulldog defense

continued to apply pressure,

highlighted by a first-down

tackle by Welch that went

for a two-yard loss.

With the pass rush by

Woodard and Pigg harass-

ing the Trojan quarter-

back, the Bulldogs forced

Collinwood to make hur-

ried throws that fell incom-

plete on second and third

down.

Welch came through on

fourth down and on a quar-

terback scramble, made the

stop after a five-yard gain.

“Defensively, we played

our best game all year,”

Welch said.

Cornersville took over

on downs and ran out he

clock.

The Bulldogs, now 2-0 in

Region 5-A, host Eagleville
