SPOOkY FuN IN LIFE SkILLS ELECTRONICS

The boys in the Junior Life Skills class have been having fun in Electronics. They are working on a ‘Spooky Mask Project’, which is a papier mache’ mask with two LED lights that come on slowly and glow for a short time then go off slowly.

After a while it repeats the process. The boys have had a great time making the masks and have demonstrated advanced fine motor skills in soldering their own circuit board for the project.

Look forward to a Spooky outcome later this term.

COFFS CARPORTS HAVE GOT uS COVERED!

At the end of last term Coffs Carports, Greg and barb White (one of our fabulous teacher’s aides) kindly donated a much needed awning for our Support unit.

Three students from the Support unit assist Greg, working as builders’ labourers. Cyril West, Josh Ives and Jason Moran gained valuable work experience over the two days of construction. Thanks Greg and barb for your generosity!

We would also like to thank Profile Powder Coaters, Toormina and blue Scope Lysaght for their donation to our new covered area.

NEWSLETTERA PERFECT WAY TO SPEND THE AFTERNOON

How very fortunate are our students to live in such a picturesque locality and to be able to enjoy the scenery as part of their sport time on Wednesday afternoons.

The walking group have been to a number of locations including boambee and Sawtell Headland and beach, Muttonbird Island, the Promenade walk, bongil- bongil and botanic Gardens.

The native wildlife is abundant and we have had the pleasure of seeing baby Mutton birds, blue tongue lizards, a large variety of birds and the occasional snake and leeches.

Exercise and hopefully an insight into the local environment – what better way to spend an afternoon.

Judy Phemister - TAS teacher

“THE NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM – LITERACY AND NuMERACY (NAPLAN)

“The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an annual event for schools since 2008.

On Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 May, students will take the 2013 NAPLAN tests.

NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australia children. It also provides valuable information that allows schools and governments to better target effort and support to help all students achieve their potential and acquire the basic skills to help them build successful and happy lives.

All students are expected to participate in the tests. Students with disability may qualify for reasonable adjustments that reflect the support normally provided to them in the classroom. Some students with very specific circumstances may be exempted from participating in the tests. For information about participation in NAPLAN, you can go to: http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support.html

NAPLAN tests fundamental skills rather than specific content, and as such is not a test for which students can study or drill. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to let them know that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day. The use of services by coaching providers is not recommended.

An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued by the school later this year. Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is progressing and to identify any areas of concern. Parents may also wish to use their child’s results to discuss progress with teachers. More information is available at www.nap.edu.au.”

WEARING OuR uNIFORM WITH PRIDE

As the weather starts to turn cooler we would ask that jumpers/jackets are plain black and without hoods.

We would also like to remind the school community that rugger shorts are NOT part of our uniform. Girl’s shorts must be black and of a modest length.

The procedure for being out of uniform is as follows:

1. A note must be brought from home.

2. The note is taken to Mrs Mullan’s office before school.

3. The student will be issued with a uniform pass for the day.

4. The names of students out of uniform without a pass will be recorded.

5. Repeat offenders will be dealt with through the school discipline system.
