The event was sponsored by Aggie Blue Bikes, a USU group that provides bike rentals and bike repairs, and other organizations, both on and off campus. “We’ve shut down the road to cars and opened it up to alternative modes of transportation,” said Stephanie Tomlin, the program coordinator of Aggie Blue Bikes. “We’re getting people to interact with the street.” In addition to Aggie Blue Bikes, the USU Sustainability Council, Aggie Shuttle, USU parking and transit and other organizations were there to provide games, treats and information about alternative forms of transportation. “We’re trying to get people to think about the street differently and to engage in the street differently,” Tomlin said. Tuesday afternoon, 700 North, or “Aggie Bull-evard,” was shut down on the campus of Utah StateUniversity to host the second annual Open Street Festival, an event that celebrated streetvibrancy and highlighted non-motor modes of transportation.
The event was sponsored by Aggie Blue Bikes, a USU group that provides bike rentals and bike repairs, and other organizations, both onand off campus.

She explained that while open street festivals are common around the nation, it’s not something that happens a lot in Utah or Cache Valley.
“Other cities have seen the benefit of closing down the street for active transportation,” Tomlin said.
The street shutdown may not be a one-time event, either. This summer, the university began working with Fehr and Peers TransportationConsultants to create a transportation master plan for the campus. Julie Bjorustad, a senior transportation planner at Fehr and Peers, wasat the festival to gather information on what people thought about permanently shutting down 700 North to car traffic, as well as any othertransportation ideas the studentbody might have.
“We’re trying to get information from students about where they’d like to see more transportation and what they think about closing down700 North,” Bjorustad said.
Right now, the firm is in the middle of gathering data, Bjorustad said. The master plan probably won’t be ready until next spring.
In addition to Fehr and Peers, representatives from Alta Planning and Design were at the festival to gather information for Logan City’s newtransportation master plan. The city is developing its first transportation master plan that specifically looks at both bikes and pedestrians.
“We look at pedestrians and bikes facilities to make sure destinations are connected — places like schools, work and the library — andmaking sure people can bike safely,” said Dave Foster, a senior designer for Alta Planning and Design.
Foster explained that the challenge is great destinations aren’t always connected, such as students trying to get to and from campus andthe Island or people trying to bike on 400 North and Main Street.
“The challenge is getting people where they want to be without compromising motorists,” Foster said.
