With a resounding and heartfelt “thank you” to the many generous donors and volunteers who are recognized in these pages, i am pleased to present the 2007 – 2008 Annual report on giving for The Pingry School. By any measure, 2007 – 2008 was a successful year here at Pingry. Some dimensions of that success are evident in the pages of the report, and i have mentioned below just a sampling of other accomplishments of the year.

We completed our first full year in the new carol and Park B. Smith ’50 Middle School, and it has fulfilled its every promise. not only is it a well-

designed environment in every practical sense—the classrooms are equipped with flexible furniture and the latest technology; the Wilf Family commons is a popular, comfortable gathering place for students and faculty during their free time as well as being adaptable as a meeting space for assemblies, movies, and community events; the walls of the Baum Atrium and the gallery hold a rotating display of student work—but the sense of ownership of their own destiny that the members of the middle school community feel is palpable.

The lower School, in turn, finished its first year with the fifth grade as the senior leadership class. The halls were a bit quieter without the 64 sixth graders, but the fifth grade rose to the occasion academically and socially, stepping into leadership roles that had not previously been open to them.

At the Upper School, we welcomed a new Director of college counseling, Tim lear ’92, who returned to Pingry after 10 years at oak Knoll School, during the last five of which he served as Director of college counseling. Tim and his team worked exceptionally well with the class of 2008 in what was by all accounts the most difficult college admission season in history. The class, which included many students who earned national Merit recognition, fared well in the college process. The 122 graduates of the class of 2008 have matriculated—or plan to do so after a gap year—at 58 colleges and universities. The most popular destinations are georgetown (seven members of the class); Boston college and Princeton (six each); Dartmouth, Franklin and Marshall, hamilton, richmond, Villanova, Washington and lee, and yale (four each); and Bucknell, cornell, MiT, Tufts, and Wake Forest (three each).

The real measure of the year, however—and the school—is found in the halls, classrooms, and studios, on the fields and the stage, and in the experiences and accomplishments of our students. That Pingry experience compels us to come to school each day, and it both flows from and, i believe, inspires your generosity. Thank you for your support of Pingry, and for your ongoing commitment to ensuring that future generations of Pingry students will have an experience at least as vital as today’s students.

Dear Members of the Pingry Community,

During the fall and winter of last year, Pingry undertook a branding study, interviewing faculty, staff, trustees, current and prospective parents, and alumni, and one of the outcomes is Pingry’s new positioning statement, which i am pleased to share with you:

The Pingry School provides an unparalleled intellectual experience for its students while guiding their development as people of honor and character.

i would like to recognize everyone who participated in this study. Among 90 percent of the parents interviewed, “excellence” was their top reason for being interested in Pingry, and almost everyone interviewed cited intellectual excellence as Pingry’s defining trait. “excellence and honor” will be linked with Pingry’s name as we proceed with a branding identity, and we believe that excellence and honor exemplify each student’s experience. We are also continuing to broaden and solidify ownership of The honor code with an emphasis on parents and prospective families.

Pingry’s mission is to foster in students a lifelong commitment to intellectual exploration, individual growth, and social responsibility, and one of our goals was to develop the Strategic Plan to prepare our students to be global citizens and leaders. To achieve this vision and advance our commitment to excellence and honor, we are focusing on five strategic goals over five years: attracting exceptional students, investing in the finest faculty and staff, enriching academic programs, enhancing facilities, and developing our resources.

of course, our faculty members are the key to the students’ education and they are the group to thank for Pingry’s reputation for intellectual excellence. As part of the Strategic Plan, Pingry’s faculty assessment is ongoing, the school is continuing to develop professional growth opportunities to retain our faculty, and we are laying the groundwork for a full review of the curriculum.

in June 2008, i retired from the Board of Trustees, and i want to thank the community for supporting me as chair for the past six years. Much was accomplished, much will be accomplished in the future, and i am honored to have served the school in this role.

i would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2008 Pingry Annual Fund. From our volunteers to our donors, it was a tremendous effort that brought us to our goal of $2.2 million. Surpassing our goal this year is a true testament to our community’s belief in the School and your desire to support its efforts.

People often ask about the function of the Pingry Annual Fund. True, it is not a building, or an athletic uniform, or a drama production. The Pingry Annual Fund is not used for just one material item; it is used for everything that is a part of our students’ daily lives and often for purposes that go unnoticed—from helping to retain the finest faculty and administrators, to enabling a child to be a part of Pingry regardless of his or her economic means. The Pingry Annual Fund is seen in the environmental efforts throughout the school to the experiences that are shared by students, parents, alumni, faculty, and friends every time they reminisce about Pingry. Without the critical support the Pingry Annual Fund provides to our operating budget, there would be no Pingry.

We would like to recognize the efforts of the more than 80 alumni volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the past year. Because of their work and the generosity of more than 1365 donors, Pingry alumni raised more than $850,000 for the 2008 Pingry Annual Fund.

First, this incredible sum and number of donors demonstrate the continued commitment of the alumni community to Pingry. Second, the amount raised and the level of participation are testaments to our shared Pingry experience and our belief in the core values of the honor code and a country day school education. Finally, the alumni’s effort for the annual fund this year is recognition that the mission of Pingry is still relevant and is deserving of continued support.

every gift to the Pingry Annual Fund represents a commitment to provide today’s students with the unique opportunities that are the foundation of a Pingry education. Annual Fund support permits the school to retain a distinguished faculty, many with over twenty-five years of teaching experience, who help prepare Pingry students to work in and compete in a global economy. With every passing day, alumni all over the world are realizing the benefits of our Pingry education. it was at Pingry that we learned the value of one’s good name and the importance of integrity and honesty. in serving as the Development chair, i was given the opportunity to view Pingry from an inspiring, new perspective. it provided me with a first-hand look into the varied ways our community sustains and provides for the school and i am honored to be a part of this community. From the incredible support of the Pingry Annual Fund to the restoration of the hauser organ, the commitment of so many people was evident. This spirit of generosity was visible at the dedication ceremony of The John Taylor Babbitt ’07 Memorial Field, which represented the Pingry community at its best. Students, parents, alumni, and friends gathered on the field in support of the Babbitts and in support of each other. it was a truly remarkable event and the culmination of an effort that will benefit our student athletes for years to come.

Pingry students are dedicated, hard-working individuals who are taught that many hands make a large difference, which is realized in their excellent work and honorable character. it is through their education that they are able to achieve success well beyond Pingry.

The John Taylor Babbitt ’07 Memorial Field FundAt Homecoming, on September 27, 2008, The Pingry School dedicated its first multi-purpose,

artificial turf field in memory of John Taylor Babbitt ’07. Not only does Babbitt Memorial Field

honor John’s love for sports and his dedication to the principles of teamwork, it also represents

the binding sense of family, friendship, and devotion that are hallmarks of The Pingry School

community. Initiated by a group of parents of Pingry seniors from the Class of 2007, a second

group of parents of seniors from the Class of 2008 continued to lead the drive and helped to see

the project to its completion. Through their combined efforts, and the support of family, friends,

and alumni, nearly $600,000 was raised toward the cost of the field and the necessary site work.

Hauser Auditorium Pipe Organ Refurbishment FundThe generosity of alumni, parents, students, and friends, has ensured that the majestic Hauser

Auditorium Pipe Organ will continue to lift spirits, stir emotions, and provide inspiration in

times of celebration and remembrance as it has since its donation to The Pingry School more

than fifty years ago. The refurbishment of the organ includes complete cleaning and restoration

of pipework, rewiring to meet current electrical codes, and the construction of a brand new

digital console that will significantly enhance sound, tuning, and functionality, allowing

students to customize, record, and play back performances.

The Gilbert Harry Carver ’79 Memorial Endowment Fund

The Gilbert Harry Carver ’79 Memorial Endowment Fund,

established by Mr. Calvin R. Carver in memory of his son,

was created to enhance The Pingry School’s counseling and

student support programs, particularly for those students

needing assistance due to emotional, psychological, physical,

personal, or family circumstances. Income from donations

to this fund will be used to provide professional counseling

services when needed, improvements to The Counseling

Center, special training for teachers and coaches, and funding

for social activities that promote diversity, awareness, and

understanding. Engagement of guest speakers who will

address the student body to promote self-esteem, tolerance,

avoidance of drugs and alcohol, and other issues of value to

young people is also a primary directive for the use of this

Fund’s income.

The Frederick G. H. Fayen II Scholarship Endowment FundThis fund was established in honor of Frederick G. H. Fayen II, a teacher of humanities and

college counselor who retired in June 2008 after 45 years of serving Pingry students with his

unwavering dedication and excellence. Fred Fayen is the personification of every positive quality

that The Pingry School has stood for since its founding. A gift from Dr. John D. Young established

this Fund, and the income will provide annual financial aid to enrolled children of Pingry faculty

and staff. “The well-being of faculty and staff children is a major benefit to the institution,”

Mr. Fayen commented, recognizing that generous financial aid consideration helps to build

loyalty and community, maintain stability, and reduce turnover among faculty and staff. This

Fund is a tribute to Mr. Fayen’s passion for education by ensuring that children of faculty and

staff who qualify for admission and demonstrate financial need will receive first priority for aid

from this endowment fund’s income.

The Tom Boyer Football AwardThe Tom Boyer Football Award was established by Mr. and

Mrs. C. Rory Corrigan and Ms. Jane Andrews in tribute to

Coach Tom Boyer, who has taught and coached at Pingry

for 26 years. Beginning in 2008, the award is presented

annually to the member of the Pingry football team who

best exemplifies Coach Boyer’s commitment to the game

of football, his strength of character, and his devotion to

the team, as demonstrated by the player’s courage and

leadership both on and off the field.

The John Taylor Babbitt ’07 Memorial Award

The John Taylor Babbitt ’07 Memorial Award is presented

annually to the senior boy or girl who best embodies John’s

fun-loving, confident, faithful, and compassionate nature,

as well as his total devotion to his friends and family. A gift

from Mr. and Mrs. David C. Babbitt to The Pingry School in

memory of their son established this Fund.
