Parish Stewardship
ST. AUGUSTINE SPOTLIGHT - THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT March 4, 2018
You probably noticed the change in the name of this piece, and you may ask, “Why?” When I first started writing the Stewardship Spotlight some
four years ago, I was chair of the Stewardship Committee, and the goal was to motivate parishioners to consider stewardship in a more serious
light. The Spotlight often was related to the readings of the week or sometimes goings-on at the parish, but not directly to stewardship. I stepped
down as chair of the Stewardship Committee a couple of months ago and remained a member until last week, when I left the Stewardship Commit-
tee to chair the Service Committee. I became Parish Council chair earlier this year and continue in that capacity now. Service is highly related to
stewardship, being the time and talent arms. So, a more generic title is in order.
My first goal as chair of the Service Committee is to reconstitute it. Right now, Sr. Ana has been leading groups of parishioners, mainly students,
serving the homeless at Grace Marketplace every Monday. The students, primarily, have also been working at Habitat for Humanity. There are
numerous other outreach opportunities in our local area that our parish should be involved with. Catholic Charities is great example with
numerous volunteer activities. I see the Service Committee as being comprised of people with an interest in being the hands and heart of Jesus to
our brothers and sisters in need, both locally and globally. I see the committee as being leaders, planners, and organizers, not just doers. We
should facilitate the involvement of the entire parish in service – service is not limited to committee members. If you have a connection with or
knowledge of outreach opportunities or are interested in service, we need your contribution to help guide future activities. I also see service as an
excellent way to get students and non-student parishioners working side by side to do God's work. We will have monthly meetings in the evening.
Please email me at [email protected] if you have questions or are interested in joining the Service Committee.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that the two essential elements of the sacrament of Reconciliation are the human part and God’s action (through the Church). These two essential elements are
1. Contrition: an attitude of sorrow for actions 2. Confession: a clear telling of sin 3. Absolution: the emphasizing the healing power of Jesus. 4. Satisfaction: performance of penance, reform of life and making amends (CCC# 1440-1460)

Save the Date: March 25. The Women’s Book Discussion Group will host local author Mary Sue Koeppel who will discuss the book she co-authored with other women who joined a religious order in the 1950’s and now live in Gainesville. Liturgy of the Hours
Are you interested in the Liturgy of the Hours or unsure as to what it is? Do you sometimes walk into daily Mass early and see people pray out loud together but don't know what's going on? Would you ever consider leading one of the Hours? Take this interest survey on catholicgators.org/news/liturgyhours to let us know! Email [email protected] if you have any questions.
Bread and Soup Supper
Is Lent passing you by too quickly? You still have a chance to have a homemade vegetarian bread and soup supper with Clay our seminarian on Friday March 16 at 7:00 in the lounge. Clay will present a short discussion of Pope Francis’ “Joy of the Gospel” followed by an opportunity for discussion. If you want to read ahead stop in the office for a copy of “Joy” but reading is not crucial. Even if you missed the first session come any way.

4. Satisfacción: rendimiento de la penitencia, reforma
de la vida y reparación. (CCC # 1440-1460)

Preaching Programs on Marian Spirituality
Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM, has scheduled a two-week trip focusing on Marian devotion with visits to various Catholic parishes and schools in the Diocese of St. Augustine from April 19, 2018 through May 2, 2018. Additionally, he will minster to inmates in selected prisons in Northeast Flori-da. Fr. Gillespie's visit features enrichment opportunities for spiritual formation and preparation for Marian Consecration in the style of St. Louis de Montfort. Fr. Gillespie, SMM, is one of only twenty Missionaries of the Company of Mary in the United States, and he is trained in the Montfortian method of proclaiming true devotion to Jesus Christ through His mother, Mary. For Catholics, this path of self-surrender invites a maturing growth in Jesus Christ. Fr. Gillespie, SMM, challenges Catholics to be "called to risk a fuller living out of their baptismal immersion in the life of Jesus Christ." Fr. Gillespie's schedule of visits includes a Day of Recollec-tion at two parishes in the Diocese of St. Augustine, one to be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 from 9 am - 3 pm at St. Ambrose Parish, 6070 Church Road, Elkton, FL and the other on Saturday, April 28, 2018 from 8 am – 2 pm at Holy Family Parish, 9800 Baymeadows Road, Jacksonville, FL. The program for both days features the celebration of Holy Mass along with the catechetical programs. Preregistration is required and will include workshop materials. To register, please email [email protected]. Light refreshments will be served.
