Asthma & Hay fever.
After a long, cold winter, most of us look forward to rising temperatures and blooming plants. But if you have asthma, allergies or hay fever (as about 50% of people with asthma do), the pollen that comes with the season can take its toll.
Pollen allergies can trigger your asthma. Seasonal pollens in the spring can result in airway inflammation and worsen underlying asthma,
As a Practice we see a large jump in asthma-related emergency room visits this time of year, please check your inhalers have not expired, and try to avoid cutting grass, playing or walking in grassy areas and camping – particularly in the early morning, evening and at night, when the pollen count is at its highest.
The pollen season separates into three main sections:
1. Tree pollen - late March to mid-May.
2. Grass pollen - mid-May to July.
3. Weed pollen - end of June to September
Our forecast is based on this detailed breakdown of the different types of pollen and their peak times within a season.
ZIKA ADVICE FOR TRAVELLERS

The ZIKA virus outbreak has spread to over 20 countries in the Americas, please check with the travel pages for the country that you are visiting or your travel company to see if it is affected.
Mosquito bite avoidance is strongly recommended; please see a pharmacist or you Practice Nurse on advice regarding this.

Women should avoid becoming pregnant during travel and for 28 days after travel.
If either you or your partner have any symptoms of ZIKA virus you should avoid becoming pregnant for 6 months.

Things to do before you go
1. Check the travel advice pages for the country that you are visiting, please ask at reception and they can give you a patient information leaflet, with addresses for some helpful websites.
2. Don’t travel without insurance, make sure that it covers you for any activities that you are likely to undertake.
3. Get a European Health Insurance Card for free or reduced emergency care if your travelling within the EU, you will still need travel insurance though. You can call 112 to contact the emergency services in any EU country.
4. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, make sure you take enough medical supplies for the duration of your stay and any unexpected delays.
5. Make sure that you have the correct Visas for the countries that you are visiting and that you have a valid passport.
6. Make sure that you have enough money to cover emergencies and unexpected delays.
7. Make sure that your travel vaccinations are up to date for the country that you are visiting
8. Protect yourself from the sun, regularly re apply sun cream using a high factor, especially on children. Sun burn and heat stroke are common and will spoil your holiday
9. The most common illness abroad is travellers diarrhoea, this is caused by eating or drinking food and water contaminated by bacteria, viruses or parasites. Risk of illness is higher in some countries than others.
10. Be careful when swimming and avoid swimming in fresh water lakes in some countries.
11. Avoid mosquito bites.
Please remember to have a wonderful & safe holiday, if any advice is needed, please book a travel appointment with one of the Practice Nurses.
“Silent solution”.
Hundreds of thousands of silent “999” calls are made each year and police have been
using the “silent solution” protocol for 15 years to help operators filter out accidental
calls.
It is also intended to help people who are in danger or need assistance but cannot speak to
an operator. When you call “999” an operator asks you which service you require. If you
don’t answer, you are prompted to tap the handset, cough, or make a noise.
You are then given the option to press “ 55 ”on the phone’s keypad. If there is no response
to any of the prompts, the call is terminated. We’ve all been there — or, everyone who gets scared sleeping in the house on their own definitely has. While we’re in the middle of a (usually unjustified) freak-out,
we’ve found ourselves wondering: what if I ring 999 but have to stay quiet because the intruder might hear?
It turns out, amidst the paranoia, we may have a point.
If you call 999, you’ll be asked which service you require, before being put through to the police. If you don’t speak, you’ll be requested to make a noise — like a cough or a
tap on the handset — to indicate the call is an emergency and to prove you haven’t rung by mistake. But if you can’t, because — say — making a noise could alert the burglar to your whereabouts, the operator will likely hang up and the police won’t
attend.
Apparently in the ‘overwhelming majority of cases’, silent calls are accidental,
caused by children playing or phones in pockets, so aren’t automatically investigated. In 2001, Silent Solutions was set up to deal with the ‘possibility of it being a genuine caller who cannot speak’. The service gives callers who ring ‘999’ the option to press ’55’ to alert the services their call isn’t an accident, without having to actually make a noise. Then the police operator will ask a series of questions in an attempt to work out
what’s going on.
Whether you’re prone to paranoia or not, the ’55’ option could be helpful if you find yourself in danger but unable to speak.
Who knew? Spread the word, people.
