In a Perham home outdoor re-model project Foltz Construction recently completed, energy effi-cient windows and siding replaced older models.

The home, built in 1946, had new windows and aluminum siding added. To enhance insula-tion under the siding – without causing moisture issues – Foltz used buffalo board, a type of wood often used on older homes.

“It lets the older homes breath out like they should be able to,” Foltz said. “It lets the moisture out of the walls.”

While moisture is allowed out, it won’t let air push in – a winning

situation for those looking to save a few dollars on the electricity bill.

When windows are replaced in an old home, heating bills will likely go down.

“Windows today are a lot better quality,” Foltz said, “they’re made with a lot better glass.”

There are also new meth-ods for installing windows that ensure a more thorough insula-tion practice. Foltz often uses a foam insulation to seal out any air penetration.

Another way for class homes to cut down on the departure of warm air is to consider foam inso-lent in the ceiling.

In a climate like Minnesota, Joe Foltz is sure to build any new home or remodeling project in a way that can withstand the weather.

Preparing a home to take on sub-zero temperatures is key for Foltz, who recognizes the latest and greatest insulation methods and windows as key components to his work.

gave the home a more energy efficient base, as well.

“It makes quite a difference,” Foltz said. “It holds the heat in, while keeping the cold out – and it works the opposite way in the summer.”

While there are many of the same op-tions when building a new home, there are also expanded choices for creating an energy efficient palace.

In a new home Foltz Construction built, a plywood exterior framing was insulted with three inches of foam, all within the cavities of the walls.

Foam, said Foltz, has a higher “perm rating,” a measurement used to identify the permeability of the product.

In a new home project, Foltz also has the option of including insulation in base-ments, as they tend to be underground in areas where frost sits, which can cool down the core temperature of an entire home in the winter months.

When Foltz sits down with someone for a home building project, he has a few words of wisdom he impresses upon customers.

“Don’t skimp,” he said. “Putting in bet-ter insulation will pay for itself in heating and cooling costs.” ✽

There are a few basics when it comes to creating a home capable of withstanding the winter months. Lumber depot in Ny Mills carries a va-riety of products designed for optimal insulation and decorative value, prov-ing wrong the myths that say style and comfort don’t go together.

WiNDoW REpLACEMENtNew windows are always a good

option for those considering saving energy. Joe Foltz, owner of Joe Foltz Construction said replacing windows in old homes is part of his remodeling routine. Not only does it improve the style and look of the house, but it also reduces utility costs.

Lumber depot in Ny Mills carries a variety of new windows, with both style and emergency efficiency.

iNSULAtED DooRSHave you ever stood near a door

in an old home and felt a bit of a draft?

That’s a problem that just wouldn’t happen with energy efficient insu-lated doors, which are now being carried by small town and big box home decoration stores.

A snug fitting door - installed properly – seals in all cracks and crevices that allows cold air to flow through, creating a cozy atmosphere and eliminating high heat bills.

CAULkiNG If a new door or window isn’t on

the list of options, there’s always the opportunity for a little caulking.

Intended to seal up any cracks or general areas where air is seeping through, there are plenty of varieties of caulking products. Lumber Depot carries caulking products on top of windows, doors and siding. Tools are also available to get the job done.

Even if you don’t know the name ‘BHH Partners,’ you surely know the work.

The architecture firm’s designs can be seen in many of the newer commercial buildings around Perham, including Landmark Liquors, Perham Family Den-tistry and others in the addition near Highway 10.

The firm’s current involvements include such high-profile projects as the new hospital and Tuffy’s office building.

BHH Partners’ designs may also have caught your eye around area neighbor-hoods, as 30-40 percent of the firm’s workload is residential. Their homes are

the kind that make people sit up and take notice – luxury custom homes that are featured in regional magazines like “Lake & Home Magazine” and “Area Women Magazine.”

These homes can be found all over the Perham area, as well as around Detroit Lakes, St. Cloud, Fargo and throughout the Midwest; usually,

they’re lakeshore properties. While the company’s work is easy

to see, what may not be so apparent is its strong local connection. The firm’s Midwest office is located right here in Perham, led by Dent alum Anthony Stoll.

Stoll is principal in charge of Mid-west operations for BHH Partners, and is a member of the American Institute of Architects. After high school, Stoll moved out west, where he worked for several years as an architect with BHH Partners (then named Baker & Hogan & Houx) in their Colorado offices.

wanted to raise their kids back in Min-nesota, he returned with his family to Perham. In 1991, he opened the local BHH office.

“Coming back to Perham was easy,” Stoll said in an interview. “It’s a very progressive town, very positive. De-velopment is an important part of our business, and Perham is a great fit for us.”

Even through the lagging economy, BHH Partners has stayed busy, working on 40-50 projects per year. Stoll and his staff of nine work with clients from the infant stages of planning, on through the entire design and build phases, until the project is complete.

Stoll said the process usually begins with question-and-answer sessions with clients to gauge their needs and design style preferences. From there, he can work up a drawing of a building that meets those needs in an efficient and

attractive way.For most commercial buildings, Stoll

said, effective use of space is key, while homes are more personalized.

Either way, he said, the design is not about his own style preferences, “it’s about what’s working well for the client.”

For example, some hom-eowners like a Cape Cod style, while others prefer a rustic cabin look. Some want big open spaces, others want to keep things small and cozy. Some like the color red, others like blue. In the end, every home is as unique as the clients them-selves.

Stoll’s ultimate goal is that, “When you drive into the yard, you’re not only proud of your home, but it’s somewhere you want to be.”

While originality is inevitably

designed into every unique property, BHH’s projects share some common traits. The firm believes in sustainability in design and practice. Natural materi-als are used in all of BHH’s designs, and the latest in ‘green’ technology is incor-

porated into every project to promote energy savings and eco-friendliness.

“Energy efficiency is at the forefront of everything we do,” said Doll.

Efficient and effective use of space, he added, is good design. Pure and simple.

‘EFFICIENCy = GOOd dESIGN’

IS PErHAM FIrM’S PHILOSOPHy

▲ A newer home on Pelican Lake. Architecture by BHH Partners.

Page 12: Home Magazine

BHH’s philosophy falls in line with current consumer trends in construc-tion. Stoll said there’s “a big movement” toward energy efficiency, with more and more homeowners ‘going green.’

Things like LED light bulbs and geothermal, ground-source heat have become popular, he said, as have lower-maintenance products like pre-finished siding with long warranties.

In general, consumers are caring more about saving money and resources through the four seasons, and they understand the importance of things like insulation, quality windows and efficient use of space.

‘Going green’ isn’t the only trend in home design right now. Stoll said many families are giving their kitchens a large and central presence in the home, reflecting the tendency of people to gather where the food is. They’re also creating better workspaces for cooking, said Stoll, with separate kitchen islands for gathering, so “you can have that bantering with the cook, without get-ting in their way.”

Other families are building second kitchens outside, as the popularity of outdoor cooking increases. Outdoor spaces in general are being expanded and enhanced in recent years, said Stoll, especially on the lakes, where many families like to spend as much time

outside as possible.Other trends include “phantom

screens” – electrically controlled screens for areas like porches – to keep out the Minnesota bugs. Stoll said he’s recently done a number of these around Otter Tail Lake.

People are also building recreation rooms, often combined with a theatre room; Stoll said he’s seeing more people use roll-down walls to separate spaces

like these. Cozy hearth rooms (reading spaces) are also growing in popularity, Stoll said.

Whatever unique details clients add, BHH’s end results are always the same: Artistically designed, energy-efficient properties.

It’s no wonder then, that, as Stoll said, “People have come to realize there’s a value to architecture in your home.” ✽

With his red Esser’s booties fit snugly around his work shoes, Chris Laudenbach worked from faucet to

faucet inside a seasonal home on Little Pine Lake outside Perham earlier this month.

As Labor Day marks an unofficial end to summer and start of fall, many cabin owners in East Otter Tail County start to pack up and think about leaving for the season.

Before they leave the area and head back to Minneapolis or North Dakota or Arizona or Texas or wherever they came from, its im-portant for them to think about closing their cabin, says Joe Guck with Esser’s Plumbing and Heating in Perham.

Laudenbach is one of two employees at Esser’s Plumbing and Heating in Perham that performs cabin closings in the area, and he says it takes him around 60 to 90 minutes to complete a closing.

faucets, showers and toilers in the house, blowing air out of the lines and just going through the house and per-forming all necessary winterizing tasks.

Once Laudenbach was satisfied that all the water had been relieved from the house’s faucets, he then went out to his truck to retrieve a bottle of antifreeze. Placing antifreeze in drains is one of the last steps in closing a cabin, he said.

Esser’s performs about 300 cabin closings every year, Guck said, with cabins ranging as far west as Detroit Lakes, south to Battle Lake, and east to New York Mills.

Cabin closing gives owners a real

“peace of mind,” Guck said. Laudenbach said he tries

to get ahead with cabin clos-ing during September, because around Oct. 1 is when he’s the busiest.

Esser’s has been seeing less business from the traditional small summer cottages, and more from the full lake homes, Laudenbach said.

Esser’s cabin closing services also include monitoring of the home during the winter season

using something called a sensaphone that monitors certain levels in the cabin.

“We get a lot of people that leave, and leave their heat on,” Guck said, so if the temperature in the cabin goes too far above or below a certain level, Es-ser’s can tell.

Guck also pointed to a monitor that can tell if there’s water on the floor, which is especially important for folks who own cabins near the flooded lakes in the Perham area.

The great thing about the home monitoring services, Guck said, is that

you can check on it yourself no matter where you are.

“If you’re sitting in Texas, you can call it up and it’ll give you a report,” he said.

Cabin owners have taken advantage of Esser’s closing services for nearly 20 years, according to Guck, and the level has stayed pretty steady over the years.

Although, there are still some owners who choose to close up their cabins by themselves.

In the spring, Laudenbach will return to the cabins to fill the systems back up, make sure appliances are operational and just get the place ready for summer living.

And if anything’s broken, or there’s a leak, Laudenbach takes care of it.

“The nice part of having us do it is the guarantee – if something happens, we’re going to stand by it,” Guck said.

Esser’s stays busy with cabin closings up through the end of fall, even into winter.

“A lot of people stay until December,” Guck said. “But the majority leave in September. They don’t know how good we have it in winter. They all leave.” ✽

▲ In addition to the checklist that homeowners have to complete before leaving for the winter, homes such as this one need to have all water drained from its system.

Don’t get cold feet about winterizing your floor-ing – what’s under foot can make a big difference when it comes to keeping cozy through the long

Minnesota winters.Newer technology such as radiant in-floor heat, as well

as insulation products like underlays and area rugs, can help homeowners stay warm and save money on heating costs.

Richard Winkels, owner of Winkels Carpet Center in Perham, said people have had an increased interest in ‘green’ flooring products in recent years, and the industry has responded with new products to meet the demand.

In-floor heating systems like electric and hydronic radi-ant heat appear to have surged in popularity in the Perham area in the last decade, and especially in the last five years, Winkels said.

Generally speaking, exposed surfaces such as ceramic tile or finished concrete are the most effective floor cover-ings to use with radiant heat, as they are the most conduc-tive. However, carpets, vinyl, laminates, wood and others may also be used with good results.

One important thing to consider when installing floor-ing with radiant heat, Winkels said, is the type of padding you choose. He recommends using a rubberized padding,

which conducts the heat rather than stifling it.

Homeowners who do not have in-floor heat and want the best insulation possible should consider Rebond pad-ding, Winkels suggested. Rebond pads help hold heat in and keep floors warm.

Shoppers should be aware that the insulation value of padding is measured in terms of a thermal resistance rating, or “R-value.” The higher the R-value, the better the insulation. Therefore, lower R-values are preferred for floors with radiant heat, and higher R-values are preferred for floors without radiant heat.

Winkels said the trend in recent years is moving away from wall-to-wall carpeting in favor of wood and other hard floors, but those who still prefer the soft stuff under their toes have many new eco-friendly options to choose from.

Winkels said ‘green’ carpeting made from recycled nylon has become popu-lar, as has corn-based renewable carpet-ing made by MoHawk and Dupont. There’s even a new kind of carpeting made from recycled pop bottles.

Though these ‘green’ trends won’t necessarily save people money on heat-ing bills, Winkels said carpeting in gen-eral is a good source of insulation. The basic rule is that thicker, or “fluffier” carpet adds more warmth, he said.

Those without radiant heat who prefer hard floors like wood or tile – but who don’t like icy toes in winter -- should consider luxury vinyl tile.

Winkels said vinyl tile, which is also available in wood grains, would stay warmer in winter than ceramic.

The use of area rugs is another op-tion for homeowners with hard flooring

surfaces. Area rugs are an affordable, decorative and easy way to add a layer of insulation to any floor.

“More and more people are getting away from carpet,” said Winkels, “so they do wood or tile and then use area rugs. Area rugs help hold in heat.”

In Perham, homeowners have a unique option when shopping for area rugs. Stitches by Schmitz’s, owned by Mike and Diane Schmitz, offers custom rug binding. Diane can take any piece of carpet, of

any size, and turn it into an area rug with professionally finished edges. Her work can be found in homes through-out the area, in living rooms, kitchens, hallways, stairs and more.

Not all people want area rugs with the kind of intricate or busy patterns often found in stores, Diane said, but they may have found a carpet in a color or pattern that they particularly like, or they may even have an original or custom piece of material that they’d like to use as a decorative rug – that’s when they call Stitches by Schmitz’s.

Stitches by Schmitz’s is located inside the Winkels Carpet Center building, at 145 2nd Ave SE. ✽

it’s time to getdecoratingWHEN tHE kIDs ARE IN scHOOL

Now that kids are back in school, many folks may be turning their attention to

getting going on some interior design projects around the home.

According to Danielle Glorvigen with Refreshing Designs in Perham, fall can often be one of the busiest times of the year for interior designers, especially with painting, flooring and new con-struction.

Lately, Glorvigen said, a common trend she’s seen in paint selection is that people are getting away from earth

tones and moving more towards colors.Glorvigen, who travels to trend

seminars in cities such as Chicago or Los Angeles, said she tries to bring back the most recent trends to Perham every year.

“I try to figure out trends, but also try to keep things timeless,” she said. “I like to bring something unique to a small town.”

In other elements of interior design, Glorvigen says that the season typically dictates people’s buying patterns.

For example, when it comes to floor-

ing, she usually sees people buying cozy rugs and warm colors, as opposed to spring, when lighter colors might be the norm. And that, Glorvigen said, is an easy trap to fall into that people should avoid.

“Don’t be season specific based on the weather,” she said. “Don’t fall into the seasonal trends unless they’re ac-cents that you can switch out easily.”

For other construction projects, she said, customers often think that they need to go to big box stores to get hardware or other purchases

when they can get what they need at Refreshing Designs just as easily and cheaply.

“In exchange for working with us, you get good prices,” Glorvigen said.

Lately, she said, business is the busi-est it has ever been, even despite the condition of the economy.

Although, one side effect of the econ-omy that she has seen is that people take longer to make decisions about what to buy. People are more conscious of their budgets, but, Glorvigen said she will “work with everybody’s budget to give them the look that they want.”

She also pointed out that she works to keep projects as local as possible. For

flooring, she’ll work with local business-es such as Winkels or Esser’s in town.

Refreshing Designs is currently locat-ed at 140 West Main Street in Perham, although Glorvigen hopes that in a year

or two she’ll be able to build a large workspace and studio to move into.

For more information, call 218-346-2475, or go to refreshingde-signs.biz. ✽

Want to save money on your heating bills this winter?

Don’t waste your energy. It’s simple: saving energy means sav-

ing money. And, according to reports by local hardware store owners, conserving energy doesn’t have to be difficult to do. All it takes is a little effort and the right materials.

Perham area hardware store owners say they started getting some foot traffic around mid-september from residents looking to winterize their homes and cabins.

“We’re just starting to see people com-ing in the doors,” said Eric Doll of Ottertail Home center and Hardware. “Usually people don’t get too excited about win-terizing until it cools off a bit outside.”

Reports from Doll and a handful of other local hardware store owners reveal that people are commonly buying such things as anti-freeze, plastic window coverings and insulation of all types in

anticipation of the cold. storeowners say these are all good

ideas. they’ve learned a thing or two about winterization from their customers over the years, and they offered some tips of their own to help homeowners save money and energy this winter:

Do away with DraftSsherry Bretz of Bretz Hardware in

Perham suggests using caulk to seal up any cracks and small holes that could let in drafts. this includes any cracks in wood siding. Larger holes, she said, can be filled up with expanding foam.

Bretz also suggested putting inserts into electrical covers. this is a small, easy thing to do; yet it often gets overlooked. Outlets on exterior walls are notorious for allowing cold air to enter through the crevices around the plastic covers. Adding a foam gasket behind the covers prevents heat loss.

Drafts also sneak in through doorways;

Bretz said replacing worn out thresholds will help remedy this. Other doorway and window drafts can be tackled with weather-stripping, which ken Peltier, of cooperative services Inc./Hardware Hank in New York Mills said is popular with a lot of people.

Doll said there are also insulating spray foams made especially for windows and doors. Jerry Anderson, who works in com-mercial sales for Mark’s Fleet supply true Value, suggests Great stuff foam sealant for cracks between window or door trim and the framing, as it’s easy to use and “is more of a hidden product.”

Windows may also be covered with plastic sheets, such as 3M or Frost king window insulator kits, to reduce air leaks.

inSulateNow that you’ve stopped the cold air

from getting in, it’s time to make sure you keep the warm air from getting out.

ing bills are a common complaint of customers in the winter. One effective way to save money on heat is to insulate your home or building, which reduces heat loss.

According to energystar.gov, there are several common types of insulation – fiberglass, cellulose, rigid foam board and spray foam. When correctly installed, each type of insu-lation can deliver comfort and lower energy bills.

to get the biggest savings, the easiest place to add insula-tion is usually in the attic. Look across your attic floor – if your insulation is level with or below the floor joists, it’s probably time to add more insulation.

Energystar.gov recommends an insulation level of about 12-15 inches or more for most attics, depending on the insu-lation type and the local climate. Doll recommends blown-in fiberglass or cellulite insulation for attics.

Basements are another popular place for added insula-tion. there are three ways to insulate a basement: From the outside, from the middle of the foundation itself and inter-nally. common and cost-effective, internal insulation refers to insulating the interior of the basement walls; it typically involves one of three common types of insulation, including blanket, rigid foam board, and loose-fill.

It’s important to contact a professional before planning a basement insulation project, as methods vary and incorrect installation can lead to moisture and other problems.

It’s also important to insulate hot water pipes and ducts wherever they run through unheated areas.

every little thing helpS‘Don’t sweat the small stuff’ doesn’t apply to preparing

your home for the winter. Little things like replacing the furnace filter and using

small portable heaters can add up to big savings on your heating bills. Another thing people sometimes do is buy covers for their water heaters, Anderson said.

It may also be a good idea to install a programmable thermostat so you can control the temperature automati-cally while you’re asleep or away.

Even just throwing on a sweater and turning it down a few degrees can make a difference: For every degree you lower your thermostat below 73 degrees, you save about four percent on your heating bill, according to the Perham city website.

Even your christmas lights can make a difference on your wallet: Bretz said LED christmas lights are energy-efficient and burn longer than traditional cFL bulbs.

“they’re more expensive to begin with, but they’ll save you on electricity,” she said.

finiSh up fall projectSBefore you dive into winter preparations, be sure you’ve

finished those last few chores that can’t be done once the snow falls.

As soon as the colder weather hits, hardware store own-ers start seeing people buying rakes, leaf blowers, leaf bags, lawn winterizers and other products to protect lawns and gardens through the cold season. Bretz suggests that if you bring plants in for the winter, you should spray them for pests first.

Doll also reminds people that fall is “always a good time to restain the deck or house. You want to do that when the temp is a little bit lower. And always consult a professional, either a home center or a contractor.” ✽

(NAPSA)—If you have a warm spot for portable space heaters, you’re not alone. According to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, they’re used by more than 53 percent of Americans to supplement heating in their homes.

One reason may be that, as the Alliance to Save Energy points out, lowering your thermostat by just one degree in the heating season can save you five percent in heating costs. You can save hundreds of dollars in heating bills an-nually—an entire oil or gas bill, for many homeowners—if you simply turn down your central heating and turn on a portable heater in the room you’re in the most.

home heaterS toDayPortable heaters are as safe to use as any kitchen ap-

pliance if used properly. They use the same amount of electricity as a coffee maker, electric griddle or toaster oven. Numerous safety features include cool-touch handles and casings, devices to prevent overheating, and tip-over switches that automatically shut the heater off when tipped over.

A few heaters also offer an auto-off safety sensor that senses when an object gets too close and shuts the heater off until the object is removed—a great feature for active households with children or pets.

The digital controls, programmable thermostats and Energy-Smart controls on some heaters help portable heaters use energy more efficiently while maintaining room comfort.

There are many designs—sleek towers, compact units or baseboard styles that fit into any home decor. They come with new features such as oscillation and 36-degree heating or with special finishes in many shades. For the nostalgic, the traditional radiator style is still available.

what elSe you can DoOther ways to save on energy costs, the U.S. Depart-

ment of Energy suggests, include:n Caulk and weather-strip windows and exterior doors.n Carefully select, install and use window treatments or

coverings.n Properly insulate and air-seal your home.n Plant windbreaks—trees and shrubs—around your

home.

cHEck YOUR ROOF BEFORE WINtER sEts IN

(NAPsA)—When it comes to protecting the value of your home and what’s in it, think two words: your roof.

Your home’s roof is its first line of defense against rain, snow, cold air and harsh weather in general. And so if you’re smart, experts say, you’ll want to check what kind of shape yours is in twice a year.

that means being on the lookout for missing shingles or deteriorated flashing (the metal that seals bends and joints on skylights, chimneys, etc.). More than 90 percent of roof damage occurs in these two areas, and catching it early can be key to preventing bigger problems.

check your roof every winter before the worst weather sets in.

what to look forExamine the roof edge for damage from wind, rain or ice

dams. the dams occur when water freezes and backs up under the roofing system.

Inspect for signs of mold, algae and mildew, such as dark spots and discolored shingles. Inadequate or faulty shingle underlayment can be behind this.

Look for blistering or peeling paint due to poor attic ventilation.

roof maintenanceLeaves, sticks and other debris can cause water to back

up and flow under a roof, so clean out your gutters and roof drains regularly. Also, check that all gutters are securely fastened to the house and that downspouts are pointing away from your home.

what to Do if you Spot DamageIf your inspection reveals roof damage, work with profes-

sional roof contractors who are bonded, insured and use quality materials. they can help you prolong the life of your roof and keep you from having to spend money on costly future repairs.

While it’s hard to think about winter as temperatures soar, summer is the perfect time to do projects that will prevent ice dams, reduce energy costs and increase comfort next winter.

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining off the roof. the water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and damage walls, ceilings and insulation. Preventive measures include increasing the ceiling/roof insulation to cut down on heat loss, making the ceiling airtight and add-ing natural roof ventilation.

Homeowners can conserve energy and reduce the po-tential for ice dams by making the ceiling airtight so no warm air can flow from the house into the attic space, according to Richard stone, University of Minnesota Extension educator in housing technology. Plugging leaks and adding insulation can reduce energy use in homes by 20 to 30 percent.

The vibrant green may be leaving the landscape, but that doesn’t mean the gardening season is complete.

There are plenty of beautification and maintenance projects encouraged for the autumn season, some of which could save you some time and energy when spring rolls around.

Outdoor Renovations in Underwood sees a variety of cus-tomers who continue to make their way into the store for fun fall decorations.

“We sell all kinds of plants and annuals and pumpkins and corn stalks,” said co-owner Marie Jacobson.

Plenty of people use the decorations to spruce up their yard before the first snowfall. Jacobson said it isn’t unusual for people to purchase potted annual flowers typically used to decorate porches.

While the cold weather might not seem like the time to plant, Jacobson said that’s not necessarily so. She recom-mends planting trees and shrubs in the fall.

“You can do that all the way up until freeze time,” she said. Even if the plant doesn’t root in the ground before winter, the

ground will keep it safe until it does root, Jacobson said. Autumn is also a good time to find deals on those small trees

and shrubs, as it’s typically sale time at most nurseries. Once the decorating is complete, preparing for next season

in the fall could have a noticeable impact in the spring, when planting season kicks off in full gear.

“If you prepare your beds for the next year, you don’t have to do it in the spring,” Jacobson said.

When it comes to perennials, Jacobson said she sees people going two routes: Some cut them back and clean up debris, while others leave them standing for aesthetics.

“Some people like that winter interest,” she said. “It’s beau-tiful in a beautiful frosty morning in winter.”

But for those who do want the frost-kissed stems, there’s a little more work to do in the spring with the task of cleaning the bed up.

Some master gardeners say that leaving the plants standing is the best option because it allows leaves to naturally gather in the stem areas, which creates natural mulch. Others say it’s best to cut it off to avoid mold in the roots.

In Jacobson’s experience, there are benefits either way. To prepare annual beds, Jacobson recommends working

peat or compost into the soil in the fall. That way, when the sun warms up and the ground thaws, all you have to worry about is what pretty flowers you’re going to plant.

“Spring is such a busy time that fall gives us more time to get that work done,” Jacobson said.
