When I emigrated to Australia years ago, relatives and friends advised me that everything (toilet paper included!) would be significantly more expensive compared to Hong Kong, so my wife went on a shopping spree, and we ended up sending a half-container load of belongings and purchases down under!

Some of our more significant and bulky purchases included a full set of Italian sofas, and a suite of Chinese rosewood dining table and chairs. We should have known that with the large and well-established Italian community in Australia, there was no lack of Italian merchandise, so the wisdom of the sofa purchase was questionable. But the Chinese dining suite was definitely worthwhile as they were selling at double the price in Hong Kong, and with lower-quality finish and limited choice.

The free-port status and our excellent logistics make Hong Kong a shopping mecca of the world, as we have easy access to a bewildering range of merchandise from all over the world, and all at bargain prices.

As they say, a house is not a home until you have added your personal touch to it, in accordance with your taste, lifestyle, habits and pastimes. Summer is the best time to browse through furniture and lifestyle shops as you get to inspect the latest arrivals in cool comfort away from the blazing sun.

As usual, Home has assembled many brilliant ideas and innovative products to brighten your abode.

Q: What is the essence of your design or what do you hope to bring to your clients?

A: My design philosophy is guided by a user-centric mentality, as I engage the clients every step of the way through the conceptualization and design processes. I aim to offload the burden from their mind, as I listen attentively to their ideas and then come up with professional suggestions and optimum solutions. I would like to make them feel proud of their home or office, enjoy the comfort and ambience, and come back to us for other

design requirements.

Q: How does your team go about tackling a new project?A: First and foremost, we are all good listeners; and we ask probing questions

to clarify client requirements. On top of their professional training, our design team is always on the lookout for new ideas and state-of-the-art innovations. They challenge traditions and norms, and are encouraged to think outside the box. We also look at practicalities and time scales, and weigh options in terms of value versus money. And of course, we attend to

details, and alert clients on issues they may have overlooked.

Q: From a personal perspective, could you share with us what motivates you to become an interior designer?

A: Interior design embodies a lot of passion and dedication, so I think it’s the sense of achievement from a job well done that drives us forward in this business. It may sound a bit of a cliché, but the fees we earn are secondary to meeting our clients’ satisfaction. It spurs us on in our quest for excellence in each and every job we undertake. And that is priceless!

Q: What is your take on the interior design industry in general?A: Trend is not a major concern of mine when it comes to designs. Instead

I concentrate on picking the right materials, choosing a complementary palette and sourcing the necessary accessories to create a timeless design. Fads go out of style before you know it, but combining simple innovative ideas, like the mix-and-match of different materials, the installation of classic lightings, the juxtaposition of furniture, and more, can work wonders to the overall presentation.

Revamping a family home with bespoke designs

A keen traveler and a veteran interior designer, Regina Kwok shares with us how she applies her creative flair and design know-how to come up with a ‘dream home’ or an optimum workplace for her clients.

According to Regina, clean lines and smooth surfaces without intricate details characterize contemporary design. However, that doesn’t mean the home will look stark or cold, because the days of boxy furniture and eccentric decorating are long gone. Her mission is to turn this 1,600-sq. ft. apartment into a ‘dream home’ with bespoke features that add a sophisticated, fresh touch to the décor.

Contemporary design is typically offset by neutral colors, where the lounge is to uncover the allure of Euro chic – luxurious, high-end and supremely stylish, with a spacious setting for gathering with friends.

The client has a preference for cream or pure white color which is applied on the wall of the lounge to highlight the contrast between a black-colored sofa and a milky-white lounge chair, with vivid decorative accessories, like cushions, area rugs, lighting fixtures and artwork. Also, natural wood and neutral furniture enhance the sense of light and space.

Keeping larger pieces of furniture neutral, the designer has chosen a panel cabinet with the occasional block of vibrant color to inject life and character into the lounge. The cabinet faced to the television is stylish yet functional, displaying the knick-knacks and also can be used as a storage compartment with a projector, forming a mini home theatre to chill with friends and family.

The balcony features two cool black chairs, perfect for taking in the spectacular scenery of Hong Kong, by day or night.

The design injects an inviting spring-summer vibe into the dining room by a mural adornment, which garnishes a light mood with contemporary appeal. While the backdrop is kept neutral, tactile fabrics and gentle lighting, teamed with pops of aqua and milky white, create a visually arresting and relaxed space.

The designer has made good use of her spatial design expertise for the corridor, transforming it into a study area and an enclosed storage compartment for a piano, plus a two-layered shelf for storing bits and bobs.

At the end of the corridor, the study area is set up with two laptops, one for homework, and the other for video-games for the client’s two sons. It also serves as a workstation for the lady of the house, enabling family members to work hard, and play hard. When it is not in use, the roller blinds can be pulled down to hide the cluster. The client is especially pleased with the clever use of the corridor, doubling the space for events and gatherings.

The black, retro-style tone colors make the site look sleek and chic. With the motto “THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX” on the wall, the area is a natural hub of the entire flat, and can be transformed effortlessly into a stimulating work environment.

To provide a larger working space in the kitchen, the designer combines the kitchen and utility area on both sides, spacing out the maid’s room at the end.

The designer accents the kitchen and utility area with wood veneer finish for the cabinets to help keep the style consistent from room to room, and maintain the same tone colors so as not to clutter the living space.

The master bathroom has been resized and split into a master bathroom and a guest bathroom respectively. In the master bathroom, the designer replaces the bath tub with a shower to optimize the use of space. As the guest bathroom is designated for the two little boys, the wallpaper has been specially chosen to fit in their style, adding interest to the plain-white furnishings of the bathroom. The cloakroom/walk-in closet is a highlight of this project, as the client specifically requested for the guest bathroom to be replaced with this spacious and sleek-finish cloakroom, connected with the master bedroom.

The beautiful grain of the natural wood veneer finish and the wooden flooring and doors add warmth to the charcoal-grey room, bringing life and contrasts to the master bedroom and the cloakroom.

A strong black-and-white room with punches of color is ideal for little boys and teens alike. The richly colored bed stands out all the more when teamed with drab colors, and adds more vitality to the rooms than monotone.

Un-abandoning, Ivan Ngai

Thinking out of the boxBased on the satirical masterpieces of Robert

Venturi, and the rocking horse in our childhood, Symbiosis is a playful chair piece by HKDI

Interior Design student, Ivan Ngai. Made of corrugated cardboard, in the form of an

S-curve, the chair offers more than one way to take a seat.

“Unlike most chairs with four legs, my piece only has two legs. So on the one hand, it has to rely on ‘others’ to function as a chair (e.g. leaning against the wall); on the other hand, you can place it down, and it serves as a rocking chair,” explains Ivan. “Through this chair, I hope to stimulate interaction between the chair and its

users, as they have to think how to utilize it.” Apart from chair design, Ivan has also started an interior design

project called Un-abandoning. The concept of this project is to activate an abandoned site – Tak Tak School in Yuen Long. By bringing the

school back to ‘life’, citizens can appreciate the beauty of the place and unwind in its tranquil settings.

“Due to rapid economic developments, there are over 200 abandoned schools in Hong Kong. No one shows any interest in them as they are in unfavorable locations, and

expensive to refurbish,” notes Ivan. “My plug-in unit concept is a low-cost and flexible method to revive and divide the interiors. It works like origami, as each ‘fold’ will create different spaces.”

Meeting pointInspired by the criss-cross of highways, Terry Cheung designed Interchange, a table for

meeting in the office. Going beyond the common four sides or round shape, the sides of his table are cut to the different sizes of a circle based upon the golden ratio.

“The form of my table is stylish and streamlined, thus it encourages people to meet and enjoy conversations,” says Terry.

Lighten up Before the discovery of electricity and invention of light bulbs, fire is the main

source of lighting. Paying tribute to fire, Howard Or designed Fire in passion, a personalized lamp for the bedroom or living room. The lamp is in the form of a flame, which symbolizes warmth. The slanting design diffuses the light, giving it a softer glow.

“The lamp is easy to rearrange, you can ‘do it yourself’ according to your preference,” adds Howard.

Flip through the Flauti Collection by Giopato and Coombes, to be enchanted with the modern and

sleek edition of lamps made from Murano blown glass and turned brass. As explained by the designer,

these lamps inherit a “lost in time” vibe. They seem to float around in time, not easily applicable to a

specific time period. Yet at the same time, they are inspired heavily by traditions and cultures. Every

single piece is an artwork, carefully manufactured by Italian artisans from Murano.

Lost In Time, the Venetian inspired lamp (available in rosewood and fossil grey color) presents

a subtle pop of color to any room. Made from Murano glass, it inherits an amethist dome, an

amethist bead, coral pebble with filigree, amethist olive, amber button with rigadin storto.

Its delicate, long and slender aesthetics is well complemented with round edges and a

transparent glass around the light source.

Meanwhile, Heritage presents a smaller and much more casual feel from its materials of Silica,

metal powders and glass. Available in colors of brass and lilac olive, or a lilac and orange shade, the

Flauti lampshade is supported and illuminated by the custom-designed SoftSpot bulb, which, in

contrast to the romantic soul, is a precise brass cylinder packed with the latest LED technology.

With bubble-like glass shapes, the Bolle lamps are created with a blown glass technique

called ‘a lume’. The product is available in single bubble and 6 or 4 bubbles. These clusters of

bubbles bounce circular reflections onto each of the spheres, creating an even glow in the atmosphere. The central

brass body is attached to the same SoftSpot LED bulbs.

The SoftSpot 7W LED warm white bulbs emit 75% light downwards and 25% of direct

lighting, creating a soft interior atmosphere. By pairing them with the innovative

designs of Giopato and Coombes, we have plenty of room for innovation

and can illuminate our space with panache. Archetypal

Traditional Chinese furniture is known for its durability and beauty. However, over the years, the craft has been slowly diminishing. Founded in 2002, with a new concept store at HomeSquare in Sha Tin that

provides comprehensive services, homegrown brand Joineur has revived the appeal of traditional Chinese furniture with an extensive range, including sofas, dining tables and cupboards. Made of fine hardwood timbers, such as ebony, red sandalwood and rosewood, Joineur’s furniture combines the Ming Dynasty legacy and traditional craftsmanship with modern design.

Red sandalwood has a dark-toned purple and a dense texture. When polished and waxed, red sandalwood furniture pieces are the epitome of grace and

elegance. Rosewood has an orange and purple palette, as well as a subtle aroma. As such, rosewood furniture pieces are warm and exquisite, bringing a touch of class to

any interior. Hardwood is a versatile material that can be shaped into curves

and round corners, but its hard nature means nailing cannot be used in assembling hardwood furniture. Instead, one has to use the mortise-and-

tenon joinery technique. While traditional craftsmanship has diminished significantly over the years, artisans at Joineur

have preserved the craft and applied it in the design of hardwood furniture.

Joineur’s wooden furniture pieces give your home a natural and comfortable ambience, and are also antiques of the future, which can be passed down from generation to generation. Driven by the belief that skillful craftsmanship can transform wood into a work of art, Joineur marries modern design and high quality hardwoods to create timeless masterpieces.

The first store to take root in the furniture shopping destination of Horizon Plaza at Ap Lei Chau, Shambala Furniture Warehouse,

Hong Kong’s favorite emporium of furniture and rugs, is bidding farewell after 24 years.

Unable to sustain its business in an environment of rising rents, Shambala is taking the opportunity of its last blow-out Going Out of Business sale to help mitigate the tragedy of one of the greatest humanitarian crises of our time in Syria. In the last three months, Shambala has raised HK$89,000 for the United Nations Refugee Agency and UNICEF Hong Kong, and it will continue to donate HK$200 for each rug sold, to relief efforts for Syrian refugees until the last day of business.

Spending the past 35 years treasure-hunting along the Silk Road like a modern-day Marco Polo, Andy Robbins, founder of Shambala, has filled his store with countless wondrous items of

wooden and handicraft furniture, ranging from solid wood wardrobe, tables, chests and cabinets to hand-woven rugs, intricate mirrors and upholstered furniture, sourced from Tibet, India, Thailand and many more countries. A vast range of beds, chairs and sofas is also available, along with an impressive range of home décor items that personalize homes with a distinct style.

Known for its friendly staff and thoughtful customer care, as well as a unique selection of goods at accessible prices that are unbeatable in Hong Kong, Shambala has built up a loyal customer base and a reputation for affordable quality, original and ethnic furniture over the years.

To thank Hong Kong for the support over the past few decades, Shambala is calling all customers, for the one last chance, to come and get a piece of Shambala at massively reduced prices (60% to 80% off) while stocks last, and to join hands and make a difference together. Featured within the Minotti 2016 collection, the Bellagio table features an evergreen design, and exudes an elegant ambience

for those who sits by it. The table is available in either the “Wood” or “Pewter” finish.

The Bellagio “Wood” table rests on a single, sleek base in curved wood veneered in Sucupira stained Mink color, with a metal support of painted glossy bronze color finish.

On the other hand, the base of the Bellagio “Pewter” table is made of tubular metal, with painted glossy pewter color finish.

The contoured top is available in round, oval, square and rectangular formats. The latter two comes with rounded corners, in various sizes and finishes that are conducive to different stylistic interpretations.

Overall, the 2016 Collection echoes the changes in the realm of furnishings and décor, and interprets the increasingly widespread need to live one’s life to the full.

European IntrigueFrom Italian brand Fendi Casa, comes the Leonardo table.

The design of the table features a captivating balance of strict and soft lines. The top in Macassar Ebony shows rounded profiles. It is supported by columns designed by spherical elements obtained through meticulous artisanal workmanship, and enhanced by the charm of the lacquer.

Established since 1987, Fendi Casa has been creating prestigious furniture and design objects based on its unmatched style. We see and use chairs everyday and we push and pull them to satisfy our needs. As they leave marks on the floor they also leave evidence of how we live our lives.

From May 30 to June 5, for the D’Days Festival, set designer Yann Delacour will be giving a scenic reading in the window of the Molteni&C Dada Flagship Store at 6 rue des Saints-Pères. Throughout the presentation, called ‘Through space and time’, Delacour will be using two icons of the Molteni&C collection: the Sol easy chair by Constance Guisset and the Glove-Up chair by Patricia Urquiola.

The two completely different figures will orchestrate a variation on a theme. Placed on top of two designs drawn on the floor, the chairs are used by the artist to create a scenery. It is a representation of the infinite dance that our planet performs as it rotates in space and revolves around the sun, just as we move constantly this way and that in our hectic everyday lives.

Sous vide, which means ‘under vacuum’ in French, provides a totally sealed cooking environment where flavors and textures

can flourish for truly mouth-watering results. For Electrolux CombiSteam SousVide oven, ingredients such

as herbs and marinades, fish or meat, are first combined, and then sealed in the VacSealer drawer. During the next stage, food is steam-cooked at low temperatures ranging from 54 to 80°C, such that natural nutrients and aromas of food can be preserved.

The oven also allows consumers to prepare food in advance (vacuum sealing), providing greater cooking flexibility without compromising on taste.

Advanced technology inside outThe CombiSteam SousVide oven features a TFT interactive color

screen that holds an archive of 90 cooking recipes. The ‘smart phone’ style touch screen smoothly guides users through the oven’s settings, so the correct functions can be selected with ease.

The Electrolux VacSealer drawer can remove 99.9% of air, whilst the oven’s temperature can be controlled to precisely one degree for consistent results.

With an array of sous vide settings, including steam, roast, bake and grill, CombiSteam SousVide oven is incredibly multifunctional, which gives home cooks an unsurpassed cooking repertoire.

Invented by the food-loving French in the 1970s, “Sous Vide”, which means “under vacuum” in French, is a slow cooking culinary technique exemplifying both art and science. German Pool’s SOUS VIDE PRO set is designed to deliver the authentic vacuum slow cooking experience at home.

Accurate degree of doneness at your discretionIn the world of cookery, it takes only 1°C to alter the cooking result

– it could be that 1°C that determines whether it is a medium well or well done steak. Traditional pan-frying entails incredible skills to achieve different degree of doneness. SOUS VIDE PRO brings science to steak cooking by providing a constant temperature regulator (accurate up to 0.5°C) and a cooking timer, so your perfect steak is now just a few clicks away.

The magic of SOUS VIDE PRO continues with its vacuum zipper bag. By vacuuming fresh ingredients in a zipper bag and heating them in lukewarm temperature, oxidation of food will slow down. As such, delicate fibers, nutrients,

moisture and flavors of the food can be preserved.Meanwhile, the state-of-the-art 3D Circulation Technology regulates a constant

water temperature, thereby ensuring heat is uniformly permeated throughout the entire piece of nourishment, bringing the desired tenderness and succulence to your taste buds.

Wholesome and delectable culinary experienceSous Vide slow cooking is not limited to steak, as it opens the door to a variety of

delicacies that you conceive. With an ultra-wide temperature range (0°C – 95°C), it is capable of preparing meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, and even fruits and vegetables.

More than just bringing about mouthwatering food, slow cooking also aligns with the modern concept of nutritious dieting, it can unlock all the essence and

revive the soul of the food.A SOUS VIDE PRO set comes with a vacuum sealer and vacuum zipper

bags of different sizes. Needless to purchase additional accessories, and easy to use, everyone can be a master chef at home and Michelin specialty is no longer a secret! German Pool | Kowloon Flagship Store, Room 2–4, Upper G/F, Newport Centre, 116 Ma Tau Kok Road, To Kwa Wan |

Awarded with the Red Dot, the international distinction for design, and the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva 2015, Point-to-Point Mattress by

DPM, impresses users with its unique and patented Point-to-Point Relief System. “Point-to-Point Mattress not only demonstrates an extraordinary design and quality, it

also shows that design is an integral part of innovative product solutions,” said Professor Dr. Peter Zec, Founder and President of the Red Dot Award.

The mattress contains multiple sections of various dimensions and firmness to support both the over-pressured areas (shoulder and hip), and the under-supported areas (waist and lumbar).

The flexible Point-to-Point Relief System can be adjusted to every 2.5cm according to your own preferences and pressure distribution, which is especially useful for a growing child. The couple-fit design also allows couples to enjoy their own customized pressure relief.

Meanwhile, the open concept design ensures easy transportation and a high level of hygiene. Each individual component of the mattress can be sanitized to avoid accumulation of bacteria or dust mites, and to eliminate foul smell. The eco-friendly components can also be replaced, thus prolonging the ‘life’ of the mattress.

As a total sleep solution, DPM also produces pillows. The Dr. Pillow App is introduced to measure your shoulder’s width and neck curvature, which helps you find the perfect pillow.

The new technology in DPM products is the result of dedicated research over the past 20 years, which involves numerous western and traditional Chinese doctors and therapists in the areas of orthopedic, chiropractic and physical therapy.

The ergonomic benefits of DPM products have been endorsed by the Hong Kong Traditional Chinese Medicine Association, and the Hong Kong Orthopedic and Traumatic Association. Dr. Pillow & Mattress | hk.dpmhome.com

Kirar presents her five favorite interior combinations: Polished Chrome with Polished Chrome accents, Nickel Silver with Nickel Silver or Antique Silver accents, Antique Bronze with Antique American Bronze accents, and Unlacquered Brass with Unlacquered Brass (soon to be launched) accents.

If you are looking for a clean and polished design, Pure Paletta is the one for you.

In addition, a special order opportunity will allow customers to mix and match finishes to create a personalized look. A relaxing bath may ease away all your troubles, but a pre-requisite is to pick
