Creating a walkway or patio out of paving stones can add aesthetic appeal toa property. Pavers are less permanent than concrete and decking, so it is eas-ier to change the design later if you wish.Homeowners who install their own pavers can save a considerable amount ofmoney. Because installing paving stones can be labor-intensive, landscapecontractors may charge a premium for installation. However, this is a projectthat can be tackled by the do-it-yourselfer.
1. Measure and plot out the area that will become the path or patio. The areaof the space can be figured out by multiplying length times width. This will helpyou determine just how much material you will need.2. Visit a supplier of stone and other masonry supplies to determine the styleand color of the paving stones you will use in the project. 3. Using a shovel or a tiller, dig down and remove the grass to a depth of fourto six inches from the area that will become the path or patio.4. Fill in the area you dug out with a paver base material, using a tamper totamp down the paver base until it is level and smooth.5. Apply about one inch of paving sand to further level out the path or patio. This will be the material on which the paving stones are laid.6. Begin laying the paving stones. Leave the appropriate distance betweenstones desired by your pattern. If the paving stones will not have any gap andserve as a continuous patio, leave only the smallest gap between them.7. Spread more paving sand on top of the paving stones and, using a broom, sweep it over the stones and into the crevices between them to set the stones.8. Create the rest of the garden design around the patio or pathway usinggravel, plants and even edging material to finish the look. Over time you mayneed to sweep more paving sand over the stones to keep them secure.
HOW TO CREATE AWALKWAY OR PATIO
Homeowners know that the arrival of spring also marks the re-emergence of insects. While not every insect is harmful, if an in-festation grows considerably or if insects begin to move from theoutdoors into a home, it may be time for homeowners to call in aprofessional.
The first step homeowners can take is to determine if the insectsthey see are genuine threats to their lawns. Some bugs emergeand swarm early in the season, but then gradually disappear asspring turns into summer. Other insects may come out of hiding ifa homeowner is doing a lot of yard work or construction around ahouse. Practice a wait-and-see approach to determine if you re-ally have an insect problem or just have stirred up activity.
If insects are not doing any damage or if they can be controlledrelatively easily, then you might be able to avoid calling in theprofessionals. However, if critters like termites and certainspecies of wood-eating insects are invasive and damaging youryard, you may need to take action.
Anyone concerned with the side effects of pesticides and insecti-cides can first try to remedy the problem naturally. Removeleaves and clean up debris as these can both encourage infesta-tions, piles of rotting wood or leftover firewood. Inspect waterspigots for leaks and improve drainage on your property, likemoist surroundings. Remove standing water to eliminate spotsfor mosquitoes to incubate larvae.
Natural remedies also may work. Mint, bay leaves, catnip, andgarlic can repel insects like roaches and ants. Citrus can be anatural flea deterrent. Planting marigolds may serve as a bug re-pellent because the flowers produce a scent that many insectsfind repulsive. Thai lemon grass plants can be used to keepmosquitoes at bay.
Remember, natural predators, such as birds, bats, spiders, andlarger insects, feed on nuisance bugs. Keeping these helpfulpredators around may be a natural way to control annoyingpests.
If an insect problem seems out of control consult with an extermi-nator. Licensed exterminators have the training and expertise toassess insect concerns and create a plan of action that will mini-mize the risk to inhabitants of your home and nearby wildlife. Anexterminator will know what it takes to treat insects and maxi-mize the chances of removing the problem promptly and effec-tively.

Maybe you’re one of those gardeners who has tired to grow roses and failed miserably.Or maybe you think roses are so hard to grow, you’re not even going to try. Well, take heart!Roses are easier to grow than ever before.
Most of the fun of any kind of gardening is to figure out what plants need and to provideit without a lot of fuss. And it’s no secret that roses need lots of sun and water and a littlefertilizer once in a while. You can cope with a few bugs here and there, but your roses reallydo need a spray of an organic or chemical fungicide every few weeks. Not hard.
However, what rose producers have never told you before is how a rose variety will per-form in your climate. the United States is a big place, with many types of regional climates. And most roses perform better in some climates than in others. Your selection of rose vari-eties really determines your success or failure with roses.
Hybrid tea roses, for example, are more susceptible to the ravages of winter. Most vari-eties will overwinter in cold climates, but only with lots of winter protection. For rosarianswho love the wonderful, long-stemmed hybrids teas, it’s worth the extra effort it takes togrow them where it’s cold. But more casual rose growers may find the own-root bush roseseasier to cope with. Because they grow on their own roots, rather than having been budded(grafted) onto a rootstock, own-root roses will continue to thrive, year after year, even in thecoldest climates - and with little or no winter protection.
Some roses just hate the cold, no matter how hard a gardener tries. The wonderfulgreenish-yellow hybrid tea, St. Patrick, is an annual in the North, but it loves humid heatand will astound a southern gardener with huge, perfect flowers on long, sturdy stems.
Roses with many petals perform better where summers are dry, and many of the heritageroses need a cool period to set buds. In northern climates, many of the hardy shrubs delightrose gardeners. The yellow, red, pink and orange shrub, Flutterbye, rewards northern gar-deners with tons of bloom all season long. But the truly fabulous white climber, SallyHolmes, which grows to 15 feet in California, needs some protection in New England, whereit grows to about 5 feet.
No matter where you live, you can grow fabulous roses. You just have to know which va-rieties to choose.

HOW MUCH WATER IS ENOUGH?Lawn-watering needs change with the season and the
weather. Follow these general rules to determine the bestwatering “diet” for your lawn.
• As a rule, lawns require only about an inch of water aweek. The amount may vary, depending on where you live,so check with the staff at your local garden center for recom-mendation.
• Figure out how long it takes your sprinkler to water oneinch. The next time you water the lawn place a few emply cof-fee mugs around your sprinkler, and measure how long ittakes for the mugs to fill with 1 inch of water. That’s how longyou need to water your lawn once each week.
• Use your judgement to adjust this schedule according tothe amount of rainfall you receive.
• Water in the early morning or evening hours when theevaporation level is lowest.
TRICKS TO SAVE WATERReducing the amount of water used on your lawn and gar-
den is especially beneficial in drought-prone areas. Oneproven way to reduce lawn watering is called “top-dressing.”Spread 1/4” inch of Canadian sphagnum peat moss over thegrass and work it in with a rake. The peat moss will settle intothe soil and act like a sponge, naturally holding moisture. Thepeat also will allow you to fertilize less by reducing the leach-ing of vital nutrients that can be caused by excess rain or wa-tering. Experts advise top-dressing your lawn once a year.
Another great way to reduce watering in the garden is toreuse the rainwater that pours from your gutters. Rain barrelswill catch the water, making reuse easy. Other suggestions:Try to keep plant with similar watering needs together so youare not over-watering plants that are more drought-tolerant.And, be sure to place a 2 to 4 inch layer of mulch aroundplants. Mulch will reduce the amount of water that evapo-rates, allowing more water to penetrate the soil.
Easy Steps To ReduceLawn Watering This Season
When it comes to watering your lawn, more doesn’tmean better. In fact, reducing the amount of wateryou put on your lawn & garden has important bene-fits. For one, you’ll be able to spend less time car-ing for your landscape. You’ll also help conservenatural resources. And, you won’t take a soakingon your water bill.

Create Your OutdoorLiving Oasis . . .
Outdoor living spaces have become increasingly popular over the last several years. The homeimprovement boom has shown many homeowners just how easy it can be to transform a homeinto a private sanctuary that caters to the personalities of the home's residents.
Outdoor living areas have become an extension of the home's interior, with many homeownerscreating outdoor living rooms and dining areas so they can relax and eat meals outside just asthey do indoors. But homeowners thinking of creating outdoor living spaces should consider afew tricks of the trade before beginning their projects.
* Strategically place the space. Property often dictates where the outdoor living space will go, but it helps to keep in mind that the outdoor space is more likely to be used if it's easily accessible from the inside of the home.
* Emphasize comfort. Many homeowners look at their outdoor living areas as places to kick their feet up and relax, so comfort should take precedence when planning the space.
* Illuminate the area. Summer nights spent relaxing in the outdoor living area make for great memories. But such nights are nearly impossible if the area doesn't have some lighting.
* Keep the design consistent with your home. In addition to providing an outdoor respite from the daily grind, an outdoor living space can also increase a home's resale value.
* Don't forget the fire pit. A fire pit provides a great focal point for an outdoor living area.
With more and more homeowners transforming their homes into their own private sanctuaries, outdoor living spaces continue to grow in popularity. By employing a few simple tricks of the trade, homeowners can create the outdoor areas of their dreams.

NOBODY ENJOYSGUTTER CLEANING
Make It Fasterand Easier!
Nobody enjoys gutter cleaning. Yet it's much more important than many homeownersthink. Rain flowing over windows, doors, and siding can rot fascia as well as door and win-dow framing. It can erode the soil around your home and damage its foundation, and alsocause a wet basement, mold, and mildew. To help keep gutters operating properly and toprotect your investment, try these tips:
1. Think Safety First. Always use a solid, quality ladder to reach your gutters. Safety glasses and gloves are a good idea, watch out for power lines.
2. Use the Right Tools for the Job. In addition to needing something to contain gutter de-bris, you'll also need a tool to scoop it out.
3. Don't Over-reach. Over-reaching can destabilize your ladder and cause you to fall. The Gutter Grabber is a cleaning tool on an extension pole that lets you clean up to 18 feet of gutter without moving your ladder.
4. Check the Downspouts, Too. If the spout is clogged, a coat hanger or the handle of your Gutter Grabber can help get the debris out of the spout. Then, use a garden hose to flush out any remaining debris.
5. Clean Gutters Anytime They Need It. Most homeowners know they need to clean their gutters in the fall. But once you understand the importance of gutters, you'll know why its vital to clean them out anytime they get full. To protect the value of your home, keep your gutters clean throughout the year.
Using the right tools makes gutter cleaning faster and easier.
