Building Industry Association Members!

My Two Cents

This year’s Parade of Homes™ has developed with the

growth of the economy. This year it has grown 18% over last

year, and an average of 70% since 2013. This growth can

be credited to the pent up demand for housing since the

great recession of 2006. This year there are 110 model

homes, 8 featured communities, 40 pools and 16 more

entries are in this year’s Parade of Homes™, which span the 2 county region from

Parrish in the north to North Port in the south.

This pent up demand is also becoming a lightning rod for those that believe development

and building does not pay its fair share for roads and other infrastructure. In fact, it is the

other way around, as all of the fees generated are a major contributor to the overall

health and safety of our communities. The building industry directly and completely funds

the respected building departments in every local municipality. The building industry also

is a major contributor in the construction of new schools, roads, parks, libraries and

government building of all types.

How do you ask? Through the collection and distribution of impact fees. In 2015,

Sarasota County collected nearly $16,000,000 in impact fees, and Manatee County has

collected nearly $14,000,000 in impact fees over the same time period. In 2015, the total

exaction of impact fees on the industry in a two county area was $30,000,000!

Now, it would be nice if we were asked nicely to play along in the sandbox of government

intrusion and over taxation. However, we are not. We are just told this is what the fee will

be and to just go along for the good of the community. Hopefully, the latest increases will

not create a slowing of the economy again in our region.

In my humble opinion, we the building industry should be lauded as citizens of the year,

year-over-year for this major contribution.

That’s my two cents.

conscience for the person you believe will lead this country back to greatness.
