The Gilbert Soccer Club is the home of the Arsenal where our players and teams proudly wear teal, black, and white. The club was formed in 1992 with only four teams and has grown in the last 18 years to nearly fifty teams and also includes the Arsenal Academy program and ARSL.

We attribute our growth to the wonderful coaching staff that has been put in place over the years and their ability to teach the game as well as foster a love for the game in our players. Our teams train mainly in the Southeast Valley at the new Paloma Soccer Complex and South Valley Junior High. Our players dominate the local high school scene and past players are lacing up their cleats for dozens of college teams across the nation. Our teams are known nationally, traveling all over the country for competitive tournaments and showcase events. On any given weekend you can find GSC teams playing in CA, NV, CO, MO, IA, IL, VA, MD, NY, TX and many other states.

We feel that we can offer every player the level of competition and development they are seeking with our tiered system of Arsenal Teams: Premier, Select, and Classic. In addition to these club teams the GSC Recreational program offers another option for our soccer families. The Arsenal Academy offers additional professional training for our youngsters and beginning soccer players. Our success is attributable to our great youth players, outstanding coaching staff, wonderful team managers, selfless board members, and the great support of all the families that give their time and efforts in making us one of the best youth sports organizations in Arizona.

FORWARDSBACKWARDS

The GSC Board of Directors have worked diligently with city officials, school personnel, and church groups to secure quality facilities in the Southeast Valley for our Arsenal Teams.

Paloma Soccer Complex is the newest addition to Gilbert Arsenal’s facility list. We are proud to open this multi- field lighted facility that will be home to GSC. This facility will be used for State Cup games, State League games, Open League Games, The Arsenal Challenge, and Arsenal team training. This complex will bring more games to the Southeast Valley and reduce the amount of travel for our families.

Paloma Soccer Complex is located on Sossman between Guadalupe and Elliot on the East side of the road.

At the Paloma Soccer Complex we are in the process of creating a live streaming feed, which will be a way to broadcast video over the internet. This would be used to stream soccer games and training to US National Staff, College Coaches, and Professional Scouts.

GSC has an agreement with Gilbert Public Schools to train at South Valley Junior High School as well. South Valley Junior High is located at the cross streets of Lindsay and Warner.

Chandler Gilbert Community College is another quality facility that Arsenal uses to train numerous teams for its College Coaches Clinic.

College Liaison Program

FORWARDSBACKWARDS

Five years ago GSC committed to enabling its players to achieve their goals of playing college soccer. By creating one of the premier college preparatory programs in the state of Arizona, Gilbert Arsenal has produced numerous student athletes who have gone on to compete at the Division I,II, III, NAIA and junior college levels on both the boys and girls side.

Our College Liaison Program includes two Directors, Matt Smith- Girls and Tim Barmettler- Boys, who work to build relationships with collegiate coaches around the country to help place players at the appropriate levels. Their efforts include educating Arsenal Players and Families of the recruiting process. There will be various meetings and lectures with the appropriate age groups throughout the year that will include information to help the families have a better understanding of the process. Arsenal has placed players in over 40 Colleges and Universities nationwide. The combined 2012 Girls and Boys class earned more then $1,197,520 in athletic scholarships. In the graduating class of 2011, the 93 Girls age group received over $970,000 and the 93 Boys age group received over $590,000 worth of scholarships to compete collegiately.

The activities that Arsenal holds for its college bound players have been very successful in the past. In addition to traveling entire Arsenal teams to college showcases, we believe that it is financially beneficial to bring college coaches to our clinics to work directly with our players. The Annual February Arsenal College Coaches Clinic has helped place dozens of Arsenal Players into numerous colleges and universities. The 2011-2012 Arsenal College Coaches Clinics hosted 20 Collegiate Coaches giving them a chance to work directly with Arsenal players.

Colleges represented at these clinics over the past years include: University of Notre Dame, University of Arizona, UC- Irvine, Arizona State University, Oregon State University, Embry Riddle, Northern Arizona University, Metro State University, Fort Lewis University, Grand Canyon University, Fort Hays University, Hastings College, University of Wyoming, Arizona Christian University, University of Evansville, UC Riverside and numerous others.

AcademyThe Arsenal Academy was created for young players aged 3 to 11 years old. The Arsenal Academy is under the direction of David Belfort who holds a USSF “A” License, National Youth License, and Masters in Education. Along with Belfort the program is run by qualified coaches that create enjoyable practices. These practices are designed to teach the skills of dribbling, passing and shooting. These skills are the foundation for success that all young players should be receiving to ensure that they have the skills necessary to reach their full potential.

The goal of Arsenal Academy is to instill a life long passion for the game of soccer and to produce players that will be successful at the Arsenal club level.

What sets Arsenal Academy apart from recreational programs and other youth academies is the coaching staff. Arsenal Academy is staffed by professional club coaches and follows a predefined curriculum that fosters player development and is aligned with the United States Soccer Federation standards.

Within the Arsenal Academy there is the Little Strikers program for players 3 to 4 years old who are enjoying the sport of soccer for the first time. The curriculum focuses on basic soccer skills and all around athletic skills as it is a great introduction into organized soccer.

“ARSL” Arsenal Recreational Soccer League

FORWARDSBACKWARDS

Arsenal

Now everyone has the opportunity to participate in the Arsenal program. Due to lack of field space in the past, the Gilbert Soccer Club was unable to expand and offer the wide range of programs we have always wanted to provide to the community. But now we will be offering a recreational program priced so that everybody can afford to play. In the Arsenal Recreational Soccer League, “ARSL” there are no residency requirements like all of the other recreational leagues in Gilbert, Mesa, and other east valley cities must adhere to.

All administrative aspects will be handled by the Arsenal competitive club staff and teams will be coached by parent volunteers and practices will be run by parent volunteers.

The goal of the program is to provide recreational soccer in a safe and healthy environment where the kids can have fun and advance their skills, where adult volunteer coaches will be offered a soccer education geared toward working with youth players, and where young players will gain insight into teamwork, building a lifelong love for the game, and as an opportunity to stay fit and healthy through physical education.

Curriculum

FORWARDSBACKWARDS

A new Arsenal training curriculum based on USSF, US Youth Soccer and NSCAA standards is in the final stages of development. Here are some highlights by age group.

Curriculum Zone 1 (5 thru 7 years)Teach the “Fun” of the game and encourage a “Love” of the game. Dribbling and shooting with both feet are emphasized along with balance, agility, coordination, change of direction, and quick movements with the ball. Foot skills with both feet to keep the ball close and learning to beat players on the dribble is developed. Small sided games up to 3 v 3 keep the players involved, active, and learning at a quick pace.

Curriculum Zone 2 (8 thru 11)Emphasis continues in the areas above, but now development of the technical aspects of passing on the ground, receiving both ground and air balls, first touch, turning with the ball, shooting from all types of angles and positions, heading, shielding, supporting angles, beginning elements of defending both individually and in small groups become priorities. Dribbling moves known as Coerver moves are taught to beat players or create space to pass. This is the “Golden Age of Learning”, where the players absorb so much so quickly if they are just given the chance to learn.

Curriculum Zone 3 (12 thru 14)All the technical elements above continue to be emphasized and perfected, now under more pressure from opponents. Ability to make better decisions by getting the head up, opening the body up to the field, and seeing more information prior to receiving the ball is strongly emphasized (better vision and situation awareness). Movement off the ball and combination play is taught and encouraged during small sided/possession games and gradually introduced into the real game. Shooting, crossing and heading continue to be emphasized in the flow of the game and under pressure. Group defensive shape with defender and midfield positions are taught within the structure of the team formation. Roles and responsibilities of players within the team are developed to a greater extent.

Curriculum Zone 4 (15 thru 18)Individual technique for each skill area above is continually developed under game type pressure. Improving vision and situation awareness are put under greater pressure in practices. Team tactics and formations are emphasized more. How to defensively play high or low pressure defense, respond to offside tactics, incorporate set pieces, develop the attack within the offensive third, develop attacking play out of the back, are all taught. Functional training for forwards, midfielders and defenders and continued development of player’s roles and responsibilities within different formations are developed both offensively and defensively.

Goalkeeper Training

FORWARDSBACKWARDS

Gilbert Soccer Club offers a technical based goalkeeping program that allows players to mature as goalkeepers and field players. GSC has the flexibility in our program to offer training on different nights and venues to maximize the availability of our training to families across the East Valley.

To meet the needs of our players, GSC offers one night a week of goalkeeper training for the U10 and U 11 age groups and offers two nights a week for the U12 to U18 age groups. We have team clinics available for teams below U10. Our sessions run eight weeks in the fall, six weeks in the winter and an additional eight weeks in the spring.

The Gilbert Arsenal wants to welcome Brady Flummer as the new lead goalkeeper trainer and Director of Goalkeeping. Brady has spent the past 4 years as an assistant at Northern Arizona University as the goalkeeper trainer. Flummer played collegiately for the national powerhouse Yavapai college making two national championships during his time as a goalkeeper.

Arsenal’s outstanding training staff also includes local high school and college coaches that have a solid background in education as well as goalkeeper training. Here is a look at our training staff:

Brady Flummer- Northern Arizona University Goalkeeper CoachAndy Murrish- Assistant Coach/Goalkeeper Coach at Gilbert High SchoolBen Holzer- Head Girls Coach at Gilbert High SchoolMatt Davis- Past Head Boys Coach at Chandler High SchoolJorge Gauldamez- Assistant Coach/Goalkeeper Coach at Mesa CC and Highland High School

Arsenal has a comprehensive curriculum that provides our goalkeepers with a solid technical and tactical foundation for success. We include an individualized exit evaluation for our goalkeepers conducted by our training staff.

Community Outreach

BACKWARDS FORWARDS

Arsenal

Gilbert Soccer Club not only competes on the field but also contributes to the community. Since the clubs inception GSC has been known for its community service along with its countless competitive teams. As an organization GSC’s community efforts have included:

Conducted a club wide collection drive of household items, athletic equipment and other necessities to the victims of Haiti.

Have made donations of 22 sets of uniforms and coaches shirts to the Navajo tribe in the four corners area.

A significant amount of soccer equipment and athletic gear was donated to Africa to help grow the sport of soccer.

A large amount of soccer gear was donated from GSC families through the United States Marine Corps to Iraq.

Individual Arsenal players also have serviced others. Matt Widjaja of the 91 Boys, organized and delivered several suit cases of soccer gear to Indonesia.

The 00 Classic Boys collaborated with an underprivileged California Club and donated to them soccer gear to enable them to continue to play the game.

Many of the older players of GSC have volunteered their time to assist with younger player development.

GSC members have volunteered countless hours with TopSoccer and Special Olympics.

GSC has conducted fundraisers to assist individuals in the community who are in need. For the last three years GSC has conducted Community Games which have included: a professionally organized 3v3 tournament with over a 100 teams, a coaches game which includes the GSC staff, and silent auctions of donated items. Over the years GSC helped raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House, a local referee, for a rival coach outside of the club, and a coach that has worked in GSC for a number of years.

GSC awards yearly scholarships to youth players that are financially in need to play the sport they love.

GSC also awards yearly scholarships to graduating Seniors, in the names of Haley Knutson, Connor Redd, and Jared Dirvonas, to help GSC players pursue their academic goals at universities.

If you or your family would be interested in volunteering hours in any of our many volunteer projects please contact us, so we can help you to get involved
