Welcome...

… To HEFF 2017 :) Last year, we went from nothing to everything within 90 days - that was an amazing and hectic experience. This year having time on our side to prepare has been a luxury and a very busy luxury at that, as all the volunteer organisers who’ve worked hard remotely to bring HEFF 2017 to life can say - but it’s thanks to YOU, that the Festival SOLD OUT :) So it’s a HEFF-tastic THANK YOU to all our fabulous festival goers, workshop leaders, performers, speakers and crew for the buying of tickets, contributions, support, guidance, ideas and sharing! What a great buzz! :) Enjoy making yourself at home for the week, and see you all at our first event:

HEFF 2017 on-site guidelines

RESPECT – and be respected!

We know that many people do not like rules, and that is okay – we don’t really like them either. However, and this is really important, HEFF will be a gathering of more than eight hundred enthusiastic and excited home educators, and to facilitate a smooth festival that is and will be a pleasure for everyone, we have to have some rules we ask you to abide by – for the benefit of everyone. Rules are always a compromise between personal freedom of individuals, and more complicated, what festival organisers must abide by law. We therefore try to keep these rules at a minimum, but some need to be laid out as follows.

Arrival & Departure

Festival address Stonham Barns Leisure and Retail Park, Pettaugh Road, Stonham Aspal, Suffolk IP14 6AT

Arrival and site access ● Do not arrive before 11am on Wednesday 26th July. If you do you

will be sent away. ● Please bring your printed ticket email and drive up to the

showground entrance ● The check-in crew will approach you with wristbands etc. ● Marshals will guide you to your pitch area ● Speed limit is 4 mph ● Once pitched, take your car to the car park unless you have paid to

have your car on the camping field

Vehicles at HEFF 2017 We will have many young and small children at HEFF 2017. To ensure their best possible experience and safety, we ask you to please park your vehicle at the dedicated Stonham Barns car park next to the public road. If you really need to access the campground with your car, please abide by:

Page 5: Home Educating Families’ Festival 2017 · Sainsbury’s, 40 Hadleigh Road, Ipswich, IP2 0BX 13.3 miles, ca. 25 min drive Waitrose , Corn Exchange, Princes St, Ipswich IP1 1AS 12.6

● The 4 mph speed limit, and ● Give priority to people on foot at all times. ● Only reverse with the help of an outside guide. ● There is one entry only gate (the main gate), and an exit only gate.

Departure ● The organised programme ends at 11pm on Tuesday 1 August. ● Everyone needs to be off the site by 3pm on Wednesday 2nd

August ● Leave your pitch area clean, and free of litter. ● Pack your belongings safely ● Do not obstruct roads (whether tarmac or on grass) with vehicles

to be loaded. In case of queuing towards the exit gate, allow other roads merging, and vehicles to join the queue using zipping, i.e. alternating joining one by one into the merged queue.

Health & Hygiene

Rubbish skip & recycling There will be one or two large rubbish skips available for rubbish disposal near to the site entrance. and festival office. On-site separation of recyclables is not necessary, as the rubbish processing plant will do so after collection of the skips. Recyclable items, bottles, cans paper and card, glass should not be bagged. Food and foul or non recyclable waste should be bagged.

Toilets There are 10 fixed toilets (1 accessible toilet) available on site at all times, and 6 more in the Barn (1 accessible) when it is open. Additionally, we will have 14 portaloos (2 accessible) spread across the entire site.

● Please use fixed toilets whenever possible – emptying portaloos costs £180 per call-out!

● The toilets are being cleaned by HEFF volunteers. Please try to make their job as easy as possible, and

● Avoid blockages by not attempting to flush any sanitary products or other inappropriate things.

Page 6: Home Educating Families’ Festival 2017 · Sainsbury’s, 40 Hadleigh Road, Ipswich, IP2 0BX 13.3 miles, ca. 25 min drive Waitrose , Corn Exchange, Princes St, Ipswich IP1 1AS 12.6

Showers There will be 3 female, 2 male and 4 unisex showers available, free to use for festival visitors.

● There may be queues early in the day. ● Please consider using them in the afternoon or evening ● Wherever possible please limit time in the shower to 10 minutes.

Washing machines & tumble dryers Coin operated washing machine and dryer are available in the toilet/shower block in the static caravan area.

Stomach bugs and hygiene Last year we had a festival pretty much free of stomach bugs. To avoid spreading disease we would ask you:

● Not to do anything which might contaminate the water points ● Not to wash out any toilet related items at the taps. (There are

dedicated Elsan points for caravans on the site) ● All dog mess must be bagged immediately and taken to the

rubbish skip. It must not be disposed of in any other way. ● A hand wash point is available near to the cafe marquee. Please

use it but don’t allow children to play with it and waste water as it has limited tank capacity

Weather English summer is known to be fierce at times – or to flood your tent away; it just can’t make up its mind… So, please:

● Stay hydrated to prevent heat stroke (Better to turn into sweaty Betty than pass out!)

● Pack and apply sun block as required ● Do use warm clothing to stay warm and dry on rainy days – we like

you, but not necessarily your cold ;-) ● We have a safety plan in the case of a thunderstorm passing

overhead. Please comply with crew instructions

Miscellaneous

Just like last year, we will have freezer space available for you to refreeze cooling blocks only - at your own risk.

Page 7: Home Educating Families’ Festival 2017 · Sainsbury’s, 40 Hadleigh Road, Ipswich, IP2 0BX 13.3 miles, ca. 25 min drive Waitrose , Corn Exchange, Princes St, Ipswich IP1 1AS 12.6

We have to operate the festival in accordance with national law, and local planning regulations, so we’d like to remind you of the following points

Alcohol & other substances Except in a family setting it is a serious offence to purchase alcohol for, or supply alcohol to, anyone under the age of 18. If you become aware of anyone selling alcohol to those who are under age, or anyone selling or using illegal substances on site, please let the organizers know. Parents please exercise good judgement in how much alcohol you allow your children to consume, and expect to be contacted to look after your children if they might be at risk. Drugs and illegal substances In most situations if an offence involving illegal substances is taking place the organizers have been advised to contact the police. Note that Nitrous oxide (Noz) is not allowed on the site.

Open fire & barbecues Fires and barbecues must be in a secure container raised from the ground so that the grass is not damaged. Please show consideration for nearby people, and ensure that fires are well away from flammable structures such as tents.

Noise curfew Amplified music, loud singing and general noise is under curfew from 11pm – 8am. Quietened conversations and low-noise music (e.g. calmly picking away on your acoustic guitar) are okay – but observe the noise levels as the council will conduct noise monitoring, just as last year..

Quiet zone Special rules apply in the quiet zone, such as no fires and barbecues at all, and no noise whatsoever after dark. Drones Are simply not allowed, sorry. This is to comply with safety regulations.
