COURSE DESCRIPTION: This two-hour course meets the requirements towards the 48-hour recertification requirements for certified nurse assistants. The instructor will discuss the importance of setting the tone and creating a safe and encouraging environment for to encourage a good working relationship between the administrator, family members, and other staff that will assure the best quality of care for a client/resident with dementia.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: By the end of the course, participants will be able to: • Verbally demonstrate knowledge of and strategies for understanding the
importance and make-up of the family unit of a person with dementia. • Identify at least 3 quality care needs of the family unit. • Describe techniques managers should use to encourage caregiving staff to do to
support family members. • Identify the process of trust-building and the value it holds in working effectively
with clients/residents, families, and caregivers. • Describe ways in which policies and procedures can help set the tone for managing
client/resident, family, and caregiver expectations and interactions. • Provide examples of strategies for creating a safe environment and promoting self-
care to caregiving staff.
TEACHING METHODS: Teaching methods include didactic presentation with the use of power point slides as visual aids, and group activity & discussion. There will be ample time for questions and answers involving case examples. A handbook will be given to participants for their use in class as well as for afterwards.
