It’s hard to believe how fast January flew by! I’ve heard many people say that January is the longest month of

the year with the short days and cold temperatures, but that doesn’t seem to be the case this year; with the ex-

ception of a few days, the weather has been very nice, and the days are getting longer and longer as we wind up

the month. Plus, January has given all of us at WES the chance to focus on our academics as we anticipate the

second half of the school year. February also brings about a few interesting “special days”. On February 2nd, we

will wait patiently so see if the groundhog sees his shadow and, with that, how much winter is left; we must also

“seek first to understand” when thinking of the groundhog, as different people will certainly appreciate the result

of his shadow gazing differently. Valentine’s Day will also take place this month, giving each of us the opportuni-

ty to “fill others’ emotional buckets” by finding ways to show them how much they are appreciated. Finally, Fami-

ly Day and the February Break will allow us all to “Sharpen the Saw” by finding ways to spend some quality time

with our families and other loved ones. Looks like a great month ahead! Hopefully, with or without the ground-

hog’s help, Mother Nature will bring us some great weather! Then, our students can continue to enjoy the fresh

air and winter activities, both during school and during the break, which are that much more enjoyable during nice

days. And… like I mentioned earlier, don’t forget that Valentine’s Day, on February 14th, is sneaking up too…

you’ve now been reminded… no excuses :).

Our School Community Council will hold its Annual General Meeting, elections, and regular monthly meeting on

February 6th this year. The SCC continues to look for new members and/or volunteers; this is an excellent way to

become involved in the educational experiences of our students. If you are interested in helping out with the

SCC, please contact one of the current members or contact the school for more information. I look forward to

working with this dedicated group over the next year. I truly do believe that they will continue to set the standard

for School Community Councils in the Horizon School Division.

WES has been busy with numerous activities during the past few weeks. One of the activities ALWAYS worthy

of mention is the annual oratory presentation that was held during the month of January, concluding on January

27th this year. All of our students need to be congratulated for their diligence in learning, memorizing, and prac-

ticing their selections, as well as for their effort (and sometimes even a little courage) in reciting their selections

for their classmates. Special congratulations to those students who were selected to represent their classes and

to perform in front of the staff, student body and invited guests. All of the presentations were very much appreci-

ated by all in attendance. Well Done!

Basketball is in the home stretch for this year and intramural floor hockey will begin soon. These activities are

annual favourites for our students! Many thanks to our coordinators and supervisors for making these activities

possible for our students.

Coming up on February 16th and 17th will be the annual, and always anticipated, WES curling bonspiel for our Grades 4-6 students. This event will give our students the opportunity to showcase their curling skills in a com-petitive setting, after receiving curling instruction in Phys. Ed. and earlier in this week.

Thanks to Mrs. Reeve for organizing this event and for providing our students with this exciting opportunity.

Remember, the dates for this year’s event are February 16th and 17th.

National Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week takes place in February, from the 12th – 18th. This week is set

aside to recognize the contributions that teachers and support staff make to our schools and to our children. I

would like to take this opportunity to pass on a note of thanks to all of the amazing teachers and awesome

support staff members at WES, who all take pride in making each day at WES meaningful for all of our stu-

dents. There is a Chinese proverb that is appropriate for this week that says, “If you are planning for a year,

sow rice; if you are planning for a decade, plant trees; if you are planning for a lifetime, educate people.”

Thank you for your commitment to the education of all of our students! Thank you for BEING AWESOME!!

Also, don’t forget that WES’s annual skate-a-thon in support of Telemiracle and various WES projects is just

around the corner (Mar. 3rd). Half of the money raised through this event will, once again, be sent directly to

the Telemiracle foundation and the other fifty percent will go directly to various WES projects. This is always

a tremendously successful event for our school and for our community. Thank you in advance for your antici-

pated support.

On behalf of the entire staff of WES, I hope that everyone has an enjoyable Winter Break and that the weath-

er cooperates, allowing some time for those “fun” winter activities we all enjoy so much.

In closing, please remember that if you have any questions concerning WES, please give us a call at 554-2325 or email us at [email protected] . You can also visit our website at https://www2.horizonsd.ca/school/wynes or follow us on Twitter @WynyardES.

Another winter month is here, spring can’t be that far off….right?? February at the library will be full of discus-

sions on families, Valentine’s Day and dinosaurs in our story times. February break is fast approaching, and is

a wonderful time to catch up on reading! We always have an assortment of new books coming to our library in

both fiction and non-fiction. Let me know what you are interested in, and I would be more than willing to help in

your search for a great book! Parents remember your input is always important to me, and suggestions for new

books are always appreciated!

Have a wonderful month and let’s hope spring is just around the corner!

are a group of parents, staff members and community members

working together to help make Wynyard Elementary School aWE-

Some in so many ways! We meet once a month to learn about what

is happening within the school, learn of any changes that may occur,

inquire about student needs as a whole, discuss information of deci-

sions being made in central office and from the Horizon School Divi-

sion Board. We also fundraise and do our best to meet the needs of

the students in the best way possible. If you are a parent or commu-

nity member who wants to get more involved in the school but aren’t

sure how? This is where you need to be and we would be more than

happy to have you. We invite you to attend our AGM on Monday,

FEBRUARY 2017

Hello and warmest of greetings to you from the PreK classroom!! We have had a busy but wonderful month of January. Our gratitude goes out to so many who play such an integral part in assisting our program to be nur-tured and grow. We would like to thank Miss Keely for coming in to spend time with us twice a week. Your sunshiney disposition is greatly appreciated. We would also like to thank Miss Marina for continuing to share her gifts and magic with us. As well, the high school is a very important part of us being able to provide a nutri-tious and varied snack program each day. We would also like to thank Alana Melsted for her help with our Cooking with Love Program. We have been busy exploring and building and creating. We have learned the routine well and are masters at our “strong, brave and beautiful” greeting each morning. We are continuing to ask those who have a loving heart to consider volunteering some time in our program! Please contact Mrs. Prime if you think this is something that might interest you. We are looking forward to getting our classroom garden growing the next month and showcasing ways to grow our hearts as well.

January was a busy, cold, warm month! We had days spent in-

side because it was far to cold to go outside and then we had

days where we wanted to take our jackets off during recess.

There has been ice and blowing snow then there were puddles of

water under the swings. Crazy weather!!

Groundhogs are popping up all over the Kindergarten room!

We are busy reading, printing and creating snowmen as we read about our favourite snowman, Sneezy. The children are enjoying the book and the activities we have been doing. Kindergarten has an incredible snowman display outside of the classroom right now!

Kindergarten skating will be starting this week. Thank you in ad-

vance to everyone who is able to come out and tie skates. We

appreciate anyone who can assist us on the ice with our new

skaters. Your help is very much appreciated!

Finally a HUGE thank you to everyone who joined us for our

reading event on Family Literacy Day. It was so much fun to see

the families reading throughout the hallways. Reading with your

children is a great way to help them become independent readers

in the future.

Happy February everyone!

January seemed to fly by so fast! Time flies when you are having fun! We have certainly enjoyed our skat-ing sessions so far. Our skills and confidence continue to improve. In Math, we are preparing for our 100 Day celebration coming up soon. We have been learning how to count to a 100 in many different ways and continue to practice our addition facts to 20. Our most treasured experience in January has been learning about our classmates’ family cultures. We have enjoyed trying new foods, listening to music and sharing our special family memories. In reading, we have completed our mid year reading assessments and have ad-justed our reading level groups. Some exciting progress happening! Keep reading! In writing, we are be-coming writers and learning the skills necessary to check our work. Our focus in on long vowel variations for the next while. We are looking forward to begin February and continue to love, laugh and learn and enjoy some family time during the February break.

1D Classroom report will printed in the next newsletter… stay tuned!

“Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least.”

Johannn Goethe

We are practicing Habit #3 – Put First Things First. We want to spend our time on things that are important! Working on our leadership, academic, and personal goals is important. We need to follow our action plan for each goal. Enjoying a variety of foods from the four food groups every day is also important. We are using Canada’s Food Guide to help us make healthy food choices. Friendship is our theme in English Language Arts for February. We are going to be reading about the ad-ventures of Frog and Toad.

We will be sharing the poetry that we have written with our parents at our Poetry Café on Thursday, Febru-ary 9th at 7:00. We look forward to listening to a surprise guest reader.

Matter is our topic in Science. We learning about the properties of solids, liquids, and gases.

Mapping skills is our focus in Social Studies. We are using a map of Wynyard to answer questions about our community.

The 100th Day of School celebration will be on Friday, February 10th. We look forward to working on Math activities for most of the day!

Jim Dine is an American Pop Artist whose famous heart paintings have inspired us to create some special Valentines. Our artwork shows the difference between warm and cool colors, and the visual contrast allows the heart shape to stand out.

Everyone enjoys skating at the rink during Physical Education classes. A special thank you to the parents and grandparents who tie our skates. Your help is very much appreciated.

We started our fitness circuit in the gym. We will complete 12 stations once a week for the next two months.

FEBRUARY 2017

Well, another classroom report! How the time does fly by! We have been busy skating, learning about

synergy, understanding leadership, identifying the magic of forces, as well as starting to use addition and sub-

traction strategies! Please make sure your child has time to use Mathletics at home as it is an easy way practice

math skills! Between all of that, we seem to fit in all of the daily skills for language and writing! Mid-year reading

assessments have been done, and I encourage you all to check out your child’s new reading level on Raz-Kids.

We are so busy learning, our heads are spinning some days! I love it when I hear the students say, “Wow, the

day went by so fast!” Our leadership jar is filling slowly, and I anticipate a leadership day in the future, so stay

tuned! Some things students can work on to improve leadership in the classroom is doing what is right even

when no one is watching, putting first things first to complete homework on time, and being proactive to remem-

ber to bring their homework back to school! A big thank you goes out to all the parents who have been coming

to the rink to help us tie skates. It is greatly appreciated by the students and myself as we get more time on the

ice! Well, that’s it from us! We hope you all have a well deserved break in February and return rejuvenated and

ready to go until Easter!

Hi from 4T! Wow, before you know it we will be on February Break, time is flying by!

A big thank you to parents who have been able to come and help tie skates at the rink, this is greatly appreciat-

ed.

In Social Studies we have started looking at Levels of Government, and along with this, will be examining and

discussion the rights and responsibilities we have, as students and citizens of our community, province, and

country.

In Science, we are working on wrapping up our Habitat Unit, finishing of with animal adaptations and a diorama

project. Please help your child to find a shoebox or similar sized box to use for this project.

Health sees us continuing to learn and practice the 7 Habits. We are currently learning about Habit 4, Think

Win-Win. We have been discussing how we can how we can try to make sure that in our relationships, every-

one is a winner.

Addition and subtraction with bigger numbers has been our focus in Math, and students have been doing well

with these larger numbers. Some days the Math Minutes with addition and subtraction facts gets students’

minds going, as they try to complete 50 facts in as little time as possible, and I have already seen much im-

provement. Also, our Mini Market was a great authentic learning activity to practice working with money.

Thank you to those of you that were able to send a snack item for your children to “sell” at their booth! Up next

is multiplication and division.

In ELA we continue to work on our Poetry Unit. I have seen some outstanding writing as students compose

their own poems, such great creativity and work with words. All students will have their own poetry anthologies

by the end of the unit. And congratulations to those students who were selected for our school-wide Oratory,

well done!

Phys Ed has been busy with some basketball skills and of course, school skating. Just a reminder to you that along with helmets and skates, students must have snow pants and mittens in order to skate. We have been having a few issues with students forgetting helmets at home, so if you could please help them to remember this as well. Although we do have some school helmets in our classroom for student use, there is a limited amount and the fit of students’ own helmets if most often the best.

FEBRUARY 2017

With the return to school, we wrote our goals for the new year and are working diligently towards them. The Literacy Day buddy reading was a great success and so was the oratory on the 27th. All the students worked hard towards reciting their poem in the class as well. Currently, in ELA, we are working on a poetry unit, fo-cusing on the different styles of poetry, poetry vocabulary, figurative language and composing our own po-ems. The 4B class is planning to host a poetry night dedicated to families in the last week before the winter break to showcase some of the wonderful poems written by our students and to celebrate ‘Family Day’. More information on this will be sent out in the coming days. We are also preparing for a year-end stage performance of the play 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' based on the famous book by Ronald Dahl. Work in other subjects has also been ongoing. In math we have concluded ‘Addition and Subtraction’, including ‘money’ and will be starting the unit ‘Patterns’. The mini-market was an extremely enjoyable learning experience for all grade 4 students. In science, we will be inviting Mrs Callie Third as a guest speaker to talk about how light and shadows are used in photography. In Social Studies we are currently learning about ‘Life in Saskatchewan before the Europeans’. In Phys Ed. the stu-dents have been going to the skating rink, doing yoga every Day 4 in the gym and learning new games. The students have completed their mid-year reading assessment and several students have shown remarkable progress. Please continue to support and encourage reading at home for at least 30 minutes everyday. Thank you and keep warm! Ms K. Bolt

FEBRUARY 2017

Another month is here and with it comes some cold weather. Please ensure your child dresses appropriate-

ly wearing mitts, toque and ski pants to school. Here is a brief summary of our activities. In Math we contin-

ue working on multiplication and division skills. Please work with your child in these areas as they are still

struggling with times tables as well as how to divide. Any extra help at home will help them. We are also do-

ing problem solving skills which is another area that needs work.

In Novel Study we are just finishing up activities on the novel, The Night They Stole the Stanley Cup. This was a great novel for this classroom as its about hockey and there are lots of students that play in our class-room. We have been learning about nutrition and have been doing a lot of cooking which the students love. We made scrumptious salads and delicious soups so far. The students have learned how to read recipes, open cans, chop, dice, fry, and use a crock pot. It has been so much fun and the school smells delicious with all the wonderful aromas from the kitchen. In Social we continue our study of Canada. In ELA we are working on adverbs, adjectives, pronouns and articles as well as correct sentence structure. In gym we have been skating at least once a week and everyone is improving. We also are doing basketball skills, floor hockey, curling and fitness. The February break will be here before we know it.

January is often remembered as a cold, dark month. Not for the students in 5/6B! The long January nights gave us the opportunity to gaze upward looking for the planets, space stations and meteors we have been learning about in Science and ELA. January 1, 2017 was the first day celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday leading to a study of Confederation and Canada’s beginnings. The intense cold followed abruptly by the sudden thaw gave Grade 6 real life experience with high and low pressure systems and the fast moving air associated with the change. Science experiments demonstrating Bernouli’s Principle sometimes had some unforeseen results. Meanwhile the Grade 5 students have been practicing good nutrition by preparing eco-nomical and tasty soups. Decimal operations, metric and imperial measurement are areas of study in Math. In Health students are learning about internet safety, advertising and consumer awareness. We even enjoyed a couple of outdoor Phys Ed classes without coats! January has been awesome.

As February is upon us, we are eagerly awaiting the curling bonspiel happening on Feb. 16 and Feb

72. We have be spending most of our Phys. Ed classes either curling, playing hockey or broomball.

Our Language Arts unit on Poetry is winding up and so will our novel study Tuck Everlasting by Na-

talie Babbitt. We will then begin another novel study, which is one of my favorite novels, Under-

ground to Canada by Barbara Smucker. In science, the students are completing our unit on Space

and will stay to the skies and soon be learning about Flight. Social still sees us plodding on with the

Exploration of Atlantic countries, while in Math we will continue with Geometry.

Enjoy your winter break and stay safe!
